Abstract

Purpose

Discover how organizations effectively integrate the temporary program outputs into the permanent organization.

Design/methodology/approach

A grounded theory approach deriving knowledge from interviews, field observations and documentary evidence.

Findings

A network of actors integrates the multiteam program system into the overall organization, generating alternate political and implementation impetus.

Research limitations/implications

The paper significantly contributes to the literature of IT-enabled programs by surfacing processes, mechanisms and structures that simultaneously address extant concerns in the program management literature.

Practical implications

The directives of current research and program standards of professional societies identify an individual responsible for integrating the program output into the organization. The study indicates greater autonomy on the responsible actor requiring adjusting to changing stakeholder groups.

Originality/value

The authors add a missing link in understanding how programs can institute effective work structures to address emerging program conflicts and issues, suggesting strategies to foster interaction between temporary and permanent organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

The success and long-term survival of service organizations depend on employee behavior such as work engagement and creativity. In this study, The authors intend to investigate employee engagement and creativity in the hospitality industry based on the theory of social exchange. In addition, The authors explore the mediating role of employee ambidexterity between ethical leadership and employee work engagement and between ethical leadership and employee creativity.

Design/methodology/approach

Through an online survey questionnaire, data were collected from 246 workers in the hospitality industry in Pakistan. Smart-PLS version 3 was used to analyze the data.

Findings

The results of the structural equation modeling reveal that ethical leadership has a positive association with work engagement and employee creativity in the hospitality industry. Results further reveal that employee ambidexterity significantly mediates the relationships between ethical leadership and work engagement and between ethical leadership and employee creativity.

Originality/value

This study not only makes an important contribution to the literature on the role of employee ambidexterity in the hospitality industry but will also help service businesses in managing their employees more effectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This study is designed to investigate a critical association between social media addiction and employee sleep while considering its implications for employee well-being and performance in the hospitality industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on adapted measures for the study variables, an electronic questionnaire was designed and used for the survey administered in the chain-restaurants of Pakistan. Through a non-probability convenient sampling survey, a total of 347 usable responses were obtained and analyzed for testing the hypothesized research model.

Findings

Results reveal negative associations between social media addiction, sleep quality, employee performance and well-being. The results have further shown sleep quality as an underlying mediating reason that explains the associations between social media addiction, employee performance and well-being.

Originality/value

The study addresses a gap in the literature by examining rarely explored factors such as social media addiction and sleep quality at the same time investigating its impact on performance and well-being of service employees. Significant implications for scholars and practitioners of the hospitality industry have been discussed while highlighting limitations and directions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a systematic review of “employee happiness” research from 1991–2023. In this way, this study aims to critically appraise the existing literature, and synthesize themes, thereby, paving a clearer understanding of the construct, along with providing the future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

By adopting a systematic approach, this study followed scientific procedures and rationales for systematic literature reviews for article selection. A total of 57 articles were finally chosen after a careful examination from 110 selected journals.

Findings

The current study identified three major themes after evaluating the selected literature on Employee happiness: (1) work, family and personal blend, (2) organizational support, and (3) Ebullience sentiment. Amidst an ambiguous usage of several related constructs in employee happiness research, the review provided a clear definition of “employee happiness” along with proposing crucial research directions.

Originality/value

There is a lack of systematic reviews on employee happiness in the existing literature. Thus, by far, this effort is one of the earliest endeavors that researchers undertook toward understanding employee happiness.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this work is to investigate the rate of entropy generation of a hybrid nanoliquid (Cu-Ag/Water) flowing on a stretching sheet in the presence of convective boundary conditions, heat generation/absorption, double stratification and Stefan blowing. At present, the capability of interchange of thermal energy is not concerned only with an estimation of the amplification in the rate of heat exchange but also depends on profitable and obliging contemplation. Acknowledging the demands, researchers have been associated with the refinement of the performance of a heat exchange, which is referred to as an intensification of the interchange of heat.

Design/methodology/approach

By using a similarity transformation, the system of governing partial differential equations (PDEs) is transformed into the system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The rebuilt ordinary differential equations are then solved by applying the homotopy analysis method. After computing the temperature, concentration and velocity profiles for a range of relevant study parameters, the resulting results are examined and discussed.

Findings

Elevating the Stefan blowing parameter values enhances the temperature profile. Conversely, it diminishes with increasing concentration stratification, thermal stratification and heat generation/absorption coefficient. The rate of entropy generation rises with increasing diffusion parameter, Brinkman number and concentration difference parameter. Stronger viscous forces between the sheet and the fluid flow cause skin friction to increase as fw and Sϕ increase. The local Nusselt number falls as fw and ω rise. However, as Sθ rises, the local Nusselt number gets higher.

Practical implications

The transmission of mass and heat is the basis of the current study, which is useful in a number of industrial and technological domains.

Originality/value

The paper investigates entropy production and heat transmission in a hybrid nanoliquid flow over a stretching sheet, incorporating factors such as heat generation/absorption, convective boundary conditions, Stefan blowing and double stratification. The research highlights a gap in the existing literature, indicating that this specific combination of factors has not been previously explored.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the important role of knowledge management in the global growth of world economies, the importance of knowledge management in the tourism industry can hardly be overestimated. Knowledge management, empowering leadership and innovation can open new research prospects for online travel and tourism, thereby increasing organizational capacity. In this context, this study aims to investigate the relationship between knowledge management practices and transformational leadership, along with the mediating role in this relationship of leadership communication. Knowledge management practices are discussed through the lens of managers’/organizational perspectives working in the online travel and tourism industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a descriptive research method, the data were collected from a total of 174 managers/senior executives working in the online travel and tourism sectors. The proposed conceptual framework was evaluated using structural equation modeling through AMOS 21 and Process Macro (SPSS-Plugin).

Findings

The results revealed a significant increase in the adoption of knowledge management practices in the online travel and tourism sector under transformative leadership. The results also highlighted that effective communication is a vital contributor and significant complementary mediator in the relationship between transformative leadership and knowledge management practices.

Practical implications

The results of this study suggest that transformational leaders, who are equipped with the “high touch” nature of leadership and the “high tech” aspect of the contemporary workplace, are the best fit to manage online travel and tourism organizations. To have an adequate knowledge management system, knowledge managers should adopt a transformative leadership style and receive comprehensive training in developing leadership abilities such as effective communication competencies.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate that, in emerging online travel and tourism sectors, organizational knowledge can be managed through effective leadership communication.

Abstract

Purpose

Climate change, driven by global warming, poses a significant threat to humanity and disrupts the ecological balance. In Europe, concentrations of air pollutants remain very high, and problems related to air quality and the acceleration of the phenomenon of global warming persist. As a result, carbon taxation has emerged as a key strategy to mitigate climate change. In Romania, environmental taxes are an important instrument of environmental policy as an economic instrument for environmental protection and natural resource management. Using 1990–2021 time series data and an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds cointegration for long-run analysis and the Toda–Yamamoto test for causality analysis, we investigated whether environmental taxes, renewable energy consumption, urbanization and economic growth significantly impact CO2 emissions in Romania.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper differs from the assessment of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis (Grossman and Krueger 1991) and instead aims to determine the impact of environmental taxes, renewable energy consumption, per capita GDP and urbanization on CO2 emissions in Romania. The study investigates both short- and long-term effects, as well as Toda–Yamamoto causality linkages (Toda and Yamamoto 1995) between these variables. We adopt an ARDL estimation technique with Bound cointegration test and error correction models (Pesaran et al., 2001) to examine the short- and long-term effects.

Findings

The findings revealed that environmental taxes positively and significantly reduce CO2 emissions, while urbanization induces CO2 emissions, in the long run. Moreover, in the short run, environmental taxes and renewable energy consumption significantly reduce CO2 emissions while per capita GDP and urbanization significantly increase CO2 emissions. A unidirectional causality exists between renewable energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Thus, to realize its 34% target of renewable energy consumption in 2030, Romania should prioritize the implementation of the Casa Verde Plus program and enforce sustainable urban planning to meet near-zero energy standards. Consequently, the government should continue to enforce carbon taxes to promote environmental sustainability.

Originality/value

Empirical evidence supports the cointegration relationship between environmental taxes and CO2 emissions, with carbon taxes effectively reducing CO2 emissions and improving environmental quality (Allan et al., 2014; Polat and Polat, 2018; Kiuila et al., 2019, etc.). While existing research (Floros and Vlachou, 2005; Wissema and Dellink, 2007; Aydin and Esen, 2018; Lin and Li, 2011) primarily focuses on country-specific or regional analyses, limited research has been conducted on the impact of carbon taxation on CO2 emissions in Romania. However, to the best of our knowledge, limited research on this phenomenon in Romania exists in response to recommendations for climate change mitigation. Furthermore, urbanization has significantly contributed to rising atmospheric carbon levels and subsequent global warming and climate change (Woldu, 2021). As economic growth, particularly in countries like Romania, drives urbanization, it leads to increased energy demand, expanding urban areas and mounting environmental concerns. This process involves industrial restructuring, and the development of new infrastructure, all of which exert pressure on energy consumption and CO2 emissions (Niu and Lekse, 2018). While economic growth is a primary objective, industrialization and urbanization inevitably generate unintended consequences, including CO2 emissions. However, limited research exists on the impact of urbanization patterns on CO2 emissions in Romania. This study investigates the dynamic causal relationships among urbanization, per capita GDP, carbon taxes, renewable energy consumption and CO2 emissions, considering both short-run and long-run effects in Romania.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the synergy of corporate governance (CG) with intellectual capital (IC) and to assess the moderating effect of profitability indicator on the aforementioned synergy using agency theory, resource-based view theory and theory of financial ratios as conceptual frameworks.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample includes 72 companies with a six-year data set drawn from the KSE 100 Index companies of Pakistan. In addition, the study adopts Pulic’s model to compute the efficiency of IC. The research uses fixed-effect panel regression for analysis and two-stage least squares regression (2SLS) to address endogeneity issues in the estimation process.

Findings

The results showcased that chief executive officer duality possesses negligible impact on IC efficiency (ICE), while independent directors, audit committees and board size tend to attain a strong association with IC. Moreover, it postulates that the moderation of return on equity strengthens the path between all governance components and ICE significantly.

Originality/value

The research uses a 2SLS regression analysis to explore how CG practices take hold on the effectiveness of IC in Pakistan while taking into account the moderating impact of profitability. The findings add to the body of knowledge on the value that strong governance practices have on businesses and society.

Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge management is a common practice in organizations, with empirical evidence suggesting that organizations value the breadth of their knowledge capabilities. This study investigated transformational leadership styles and their influence on knowledge management practices and organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative survey was conducted, and data from 270 managers of Islamic banks in the United Arab Emirates were analyzed.

Findings

Transformational leadership (TL) considerably affects organizational performance and knowledge management capabilities (KMC).

Originality/value

This study offers critical insights into adopting knowledge management practices and discusses the theoretical and managerial implications of its findings. Furthermore, it elucidates the crucial impact of transformational leadership on organizational performance and KMC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the direct effect of paternalistic leadership on the employee’s feedback orientation in the Egyptian public sector. It also investigates the mediating effect of the employee’s workplace well-being on the relationship between paternalistic leadership and feedback orientation.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a questionnaire that consists of measures adopted from existing and tested scales. A mediation analysis is conducted using structure equation modelling to examine the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The findings reveal that paternalistic leadership is positively associated with feedback utility, accountability, awareness and self-efficacy. Moreover, the employee’s workplace well-being significantly mediates the proposed relationship between paternalistic leadership and the aforementioned dimensions of feedback orientation.

Originality/value

The relationship between paternalistic leadership and feedback orientation has received an extremely limited academic attention. This study hypothesizes a mediation model which investigates the leadership, well-being and feedback associations in the traditionally under-researched Egyptian context.
