Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to logically establish a Non – IT ERP solution for small and medium scale industry which is based on improvement of operational efficiencies and not on ERP implementation. Today's buzzword ERP is not the right fit everywhere. The medium and small segment has many failure stories and causes of dissatisfaction. There are two schools of thought prevailing in this segment of industry. One school of thought is for big investment for ERP. The other school of thought is not to invest in ERP. This paper further strengthens the second school of thought with valid logic and real life case examples.

Design/methodology/approach

The design and approach is to logically establish the unacceptability of ERP solution in small segment through industry analysis and ROI analysis and to develop a model for improvement of supply chain efficiency using linear programming and Wagner Whitin algorithm.

Findings

A Non IT ERP solution for a segment of industry whose turnover is less than 2.5 M USD (in Indian perspective) which is completely based on standard operating procedure. The benefit of this model has been evaluated logically.

Originality/value

A real substitute of ERP system has been conceptualized in this research paper through improvement in standard operating procedure.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a reliable and effective algorithm that is suitable for addressing the problems of continuous orders of frequencies and modes under different boundary conditions, circumferential wave numbers and thickness-to-length ratios of moderately thick circular cylindrical shells. The theory of free vibration of rotating cylindrical shells is of utmost importance in fields such as structural engineering, rock engineering and aerospace engineering. The finite element method is commonly used to study the theory of free vibration of rotating cylindrical shells. The proposed adaptive finite element method can achieve a considerably more reliable high-precision solution than the conventional finite element method.

Design/methodology/approach

On a given finite element mesh, the solutions of the frequency mode of the moderately thick circular cylindrical shell were obtained using the conventional finite element method. Subsequently, the superconvergent patch recovery displacement method and high-order shape function interpolation techniques were introduced to obtain the superconvergent solution of the mode (displacement), while the superconvergent solution of the frequency was obtained using the Rayleigh quotient computation. Finally, the superconvergent solution of the mode was used to estimate the errors of the finite element solutions in the energy norm, and the mesh was subdivided to generate a new mesh in accordance with the errors.

Findings

In this study, a high-precision and reliable superconvergent patch recovery solution for the vibration modes of variable geometrical rotating cylindrical shells was developed. Compared with conventional finite element method, under the challenging varying geometrical circumferential wave numbers, and thickness–length ratios, the optimised finite element meshes and high-precision solutions satisfying the preset error limits were obtained successfully to solve the frequency and mode of continuous orders of rotating cylindrical shells with multiple boundary conditions such as simple and fixed supports, demonstrating good solution efficiency. The existing problem on the difficulty of adapting a set of meshes to the changes in vibration modes of different orders is finally overcome by applying the adaptive optimisation.

Originality/value

The approach developed in this study can accurately obtain the superconvergent patch recovery solution of the vibration mode of rotating cylindrical shells. It can potentially be extended to fine numerical models and high-precision computations of vibration modes (displacement field) and solid stress (displacement derivative field) for general structural special value problems, which can be extensively applied in the field of engineering computations in the future. Furthermore, the proposed method has the potential for adaptive analyses of shell structures and three-dimensional structures with crack damage. Compared with conventional finite element methods, significant advantages can be achieved by solving the eigenvalues of structures with high precision and stability.

Abstract

Purpose

Text mining has been used for various knowledge discovery based applications, and thus, a lot of research has been contributed towards it. Latest trending research in the text mining is adopting the incremental learning data, as it is economical while dealing with large volume of information.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary intention of this research is to design and develop a technique for incremental text categorization using optimized Support Vector Neural Network (SVNN). The proposed technique involves four major steps, such as pre-processing, feature selection, classification and feature extraction. Initially, the data is pre-processed based on stop word removal and stemming. Then, the feature extraction is done by extracting semantic word-based features and Term Frequency and Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). From the extracted features, the important features are selected using Bhattacharya distance measure and the features are subjected as the input to the proposed classifier. The proposed classifier performs incremental learning using SVNN, wherein the weights are bounded in a limit using rough set theory. Moreover, for the optimal selection of weights in SVNN, Moth Search (MS) algorithm is used. Thus, the proposed classifier, named Rough set MS-SVNN, performs the text categorization for the incremental data, given as the input.

Findings

For the experimentation, the 20 News group dataset, and the Reuters dataset are used. Simulation results indicate that the proposed Rough set based MS-SVNN has achieved 0.7743, 0.7774 and 0.7745 for the precision, recall and F-measure, respectively.

Originality/value

In this paper, an online incremental learner is developed for the text categorization. The text categorization is done by developing the Rough set MS-SVNN classifier, which classifies the incoming texts based on the boundary condition evaluated by the Rough set theory, and the optimal weights from the MS. The proposed online text categorization scheme has the basic steps, like pre-processing, feature extraction, feature selection and classification. The pre-processing is carried out to identify the unique words from the dataset, and the features like semantic word-based features and TF-IDF are obtained from the keyword set. Feature selection is done by setting a minimum Bhattacharya distance measure, and the selected features are provided to the proposed Rough set MS-SVNN for the classification.

Abstract

Purpose

The sharing economy has evolved as a result of the diffusion of information and communication technology and facilitates collaborative consumption and production otherwise known as value co-creation. The present research aims to explore the consumer responses to value co-creation in sharing economy such as satisfaction, brand preference and enduring buyer–platform relationships, amid consumer's CSR concerns.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on the sharing economy and value co-creation literature and rooted in the stimulus-organism-response framework, an online panel data provider was employed to recruit 393 actual sharing economy consumers from the United States. Empirical analyses are performed using structural equation modeling through Amos, version.27.

Findings

Findings confirm that value co-creation intentions contribute to consumers' satisfaction, brand preference and sustainable social relationships in the sharing economy. As expected, heightened concerns of corporate social responsibility (CSR) led to decreased consumer satisfaction with the sharing economy platform.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the digital sharing economy literature by emphasizing the role of CSR perceptions for building long-term relationships (buyer–platform relationships) where value co-creation is crucial.

Abstract

Purpose

Document retrieval has become a hot research topic over the past few years, and has been paid more attention in browsing and synthesizing information from different documents. The purpose of this paper is to develop an effective document retrieval method, which focuses on reducing the time needed for the navigator to evoke the whole document based on contents, themes and concepts of documents.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces an incremental learning approach for text categorization using Monarch Butterfly optimization–FireFly optimization based Neural Network (MB–FF based NN). Initially, the feature extraction is carried out on the pre-processed data using Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF–IDF) and holoentropy to find the keywords of the document. Then, cluster-based indexing is performed using MB–FF algorithm, and finally, by matching process with the modified Bhattacharya distance measure, the document retrieval is done. In MB–FF based NN, the weights in the NN are chosen using MB–FF algorithm.

Findings

The effectiveness of the proposed MB–FF based NN is proven with an improved precision value of 0.8769, recall value of 0.7957, F-measure of 0.8143 and accuracy of 0.7815, respectively.

Originality/value

The experimental results show that the proposed MB–FF based NN is useful to companies, which have a large workforce across the country.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between knowledge-sharing activities of the firm and its innovation capability. It also investigates the moderating impact of the firms' absorptive capacity on the relationship between knowledge sharing and firm innovation capability from the cross-subsidiary perspective in the international market environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This study reviewed the literature from the areas of knowledge management, international market and innovation management. Through the literature review, absorptive capacity theory and dynamic capability view (DCV) theory, a conceptual model has been developed. This model has been validated using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique with 612 respondents from 16 multinational firms from different countries.

Findings

The study finds that knowledge-sharing activities across subsidiaries of multinational firms are important for product and process innovation. Firms’ absorptive capacity also impacts the relationship between firms' knowledge-sharing activities and their different dynamic capabilities, such as sensing, seizing and transforming. The study also finds that firms' innovation capability positively impacts their competitiveness.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides valuable inputs to the management of multinational firms to recognize the importance of knowledge-sharing activities across their different subsidiaries in the international marketing knowledge management (MKM) context.

Originality/value

The study adds to the literature on knowledge management, international market and firms' innovation capability. As the study examines the knowledge-sharing activities across different subsidiaries of multinational firms, especially in the context of process and product innovation, it is considered unique. The study also provides a unique validated model.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the relationship between the flexibility of working from anywhere and employees' psychological well-being (PWB) and safety. This study also investigates the moderating role of human resource (HR) leadership teams on HR policy (HRP), firm infrastructure (FRI) and remote work flexibility.

Design/methodology/approach

With the help of the literature review and flexible firm theory (FFT) and dynamic capability view (DCV) theory, a model has been developed conceptually. Later, the conceptual model is validated using partial least squares – structural equation modelling technique considering 471 useable respondents from different Asian and European firms to understand cross-country implications. This research study uses convenience and purposeful sampling techniques.

Findings

This study shows that there is a significant and positive moderating role of HR leadership support (HLS) towards developing flexible HRP and appropriate FRI to enable employees to work from anywhere. The results also indicate that there is a significant and positive impact of work from anywhere flexibility (WAF) and employee PWB and psychological safety (PSS), which in turn positively and significantly impact employee satisfaction (EMS) resulting in better firm performance (FP).

Research limitations/implications

This study provides valuable input to HR management teams for developing effective HR policies to enable a work from anywhere option. The study also provides food for thought to practitioners, researchers and academicians regarding the need for more research on the relationship between work flexibility, PWB and FP. Finally, this study develops a unique model which could be used by any firm towards framing an effective HRP enabling WAF.

Originality/value

This research adds value to the overall body of knowledge of HR management. There is no study which investigated the impact of WAF on employee PWB and PSS. Thus, this study is considered a unique study. Moreover, the proposed model in this research study is also a unique model with explanative power of 71%.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impacts of microlevel corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities on firm sustainability. The study also examines the mediating roles of CSR performance (CSRP) and top management support on firm sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

With the help of existing literature and theories, a theoretical model has been developed, which is then validated using structural equation modeling technique considering 327 respondents who perform CSR activities at respondents' firms in India. The research methods include moderator analysis to understand the role of top management support for firm sustainability.

Findings

This research found that microlevel CSR activities have a significant positive impact on CSR performance. The study also found that there is a significant moderating impact of top management support on the relationship between CSR performance and firm sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

This study proposed a theoretical model which has established the relationships between the microlevel CSR activities and CSRP along with firm sustainability. This is an effective model and provides vital inputs to the firms on how to succeed with CSR activities. Limitations to this study's generalizability include use of cross-sectional data and that the data were collected from one country.

Originality/value

The proposed theoretical model is unique and can be applied by firms to enhance firms' CSR performance. There is no other study which has investigated the moderating role of firm leadership team impacting the relationship between CSR performance and firm sustainability. Thus, this study is a unique attempt and adds value to the extant literature on CSR as well as firm sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

With the rapid rise in the number of start-ups, corporate social responsibility (CSR) can principally contribute to the nation’s socioeconomic development, making it more critical. This study aims to explore the effect of sustainability practices on a firm’s performance with competitive advantage (CA) and innovation (INN) as the mediating variable.

Design/methodology/approach

An exhaustive literature review was done to identify the constructs relationship for this study, and a questionnaire was used to gather the data from the start-up owners. In total, 400 samples were received, and partial least squares structural equation modeling was used for testing and validating the proposed hypotheses.

Findings

CSR and financial performance (FP) have a significant relationship. According to this study’s findings, innovation and CA substantially mediate the relationship between a firm’s FP and CSR. This study will highlight how CSR practices stimulate organizational creativity, problem-solving and strategic thinking. It will also demonstrate how CSR can foster a culture of innovation that generates long-term value and positively impacts FP.

Practical implications

It will aid in improving the knowledge of start-up owners that CSR is more than just pure altruism or philanthropy; instead, it must be promoted strategically as an investment that boosts productivity and creativity while also bringing overall financial benefits to the company. It will ultimately enhance the start-ups’ ability to improve the economy and society. Furthermore, this study holds the potential to inform policy discussions and recommendations for fostering responsible business practices in the Indian start-up ecosystem. Policymakers can benefit from insights into how regulations and incentives can be designed to encourage start-ups to adopt CSR practices that not only fulfill legal obligations but also contribute to their CA and FP.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical validity to establish linkages between sustainability measures on the FP concerning start-ups that were not considered in the prior studies. Identifying the current conceptual framework and CA and Innovation as the two major factors influencing CSR in Indian enterprises is a novel contribution. This study aims to fill the research gap. By unravelling the intricate dynamics between CSR, FP and CA, the research contributes to the understanding of how start-ups can navigate the complex interplay of social responsibility and business success in the Indian context.
