Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the flow and heat transfer inside a wavy enclosure filled with Cu-water nanofluid under magnetic field effect by parallel implemented meshfree approach.

Design/methodology/approach

The simulation has been carried out for a two-dimensional model with steady, laminar and incompressible flow of the nanofluid filled inside wavy enclosure in which one of the walls is sinusoidal such that the amplitude (A = 0.15) and number of undulations (n = 2) are fixed. A uniform magnetic field B0 has been applied at an inclination angle γ. The governing equations for the transport phenomena have been solved numerically by implementing element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) with the sequential as well as parallel approach. The effect of various parameters, namely, nanoparticle volume fraction (φ), Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha) and magnetic field inclination angle (γ) has been studied on the natural convection flow of nanofluid.

Findings

The results are obtained in terms of average Nusselt number calculated at the cold wavy wall, streamlines and isotherms. It has been observed that the increasing value of Rayleigh number results in increased heat transfer rate while the Hartmann number retards the fluid motion. On the other hand, the magnetic field inclination angle gives rise to the heat transfer rate up to its critical value. Above this value, the heat transfer rate starts to decrease.

Originality/value

The implementation of the magnetic field and its inclination has provided very interesting results on heat and fluid flow which can be used in the drug delivery where nanofluids are used in many physiological problems. Another important novelty of the paper is that meshfree method (EFGM) has been used here because the domain is irregular. The results have been found to be very satisfactory. In addition, parallelization of the scheme (which has not been implemented earlier in such problems) improves the computational efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a phase transition, melting problem. In this problem, phase transition between solid and liquid takes place within a square enclosure in the presence of natural convection.

Design/methodology/approach

The physical problem, described with non-linear partial differential equations, is simulated using a hybrid finite element and element free Galerkin method (FEM/EFGM) approach. In energy conservation equation, the fixed-domain, effective heat capacity method is used to take into account the latent heat of phase change. The governing partial differential equations are solved with a meshfree, EFGM near the phase transition front while in the region away from the front with uniform nodal distribution; problem is simulated with traditional FEM.

Findings

A sensitivity analysis of characteristic dimensionless numbers Rayleigh number (Ra), Prandtl number (Pr), Stefan number (ste) is presented in order to investigate their impact on thermal and flow fields. Typically computational times of EFGM are higher than that of FEM. Therefore, by using EFGM only in that portion of physical problem where phase transition occurs, the hybrid FEM/EFGM strategy employed in present paper could reduce the computational time of EFGM while still retaining its accuracy. Also, the consistent performance of the results obtained with this hybrid approach is validated with those already available in literature for some special cases.

Originality/value

The hybrid methodology adopted in this paper, is quite new for solving such type of phase transition problem.

Abstract

Purpose

The effect of non-linear thermal radiation and variable thermo-physical properties are investigated in the Falkner-Skan flow of a Casson nanofluid in the presence of magnetic field. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Selected bunch of similarity transformations are used to reduce the governing partial differential equations into a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations. The resultant equations are numerically solved using Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg fourth-fifth-order method along with shooting technique.

Findings

The velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are evaluated for several emerging physical parameters and are analyzed through graphs and tables in detail.

Research limitations/implications

This study only begins to reveal the research potential and pitfalls of research and publishing on boundary-layer flow, heat and mass transfer of Casson nanofluid past and the moving and static wedge-shaped bodies.

Originality/value

It is found that the presence of non-linear thermal radiation and variable properties has more influence in heat transfer. Furthermore, temperature profile increases as the radiation parameter increases.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming and powder metallurgy are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on the subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for the last five years, and more than 1100 references are listed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the interlink between work-life integration, job contentment and employee engagement. The notion of how far work-life balance (WLB) policies have a throwback on employee engagement has been presented with shreds of evidence of previous studies carried out in the timeline of 2005–2021 in India. The purpose is to bring forward comprehensive studies together, which are available on piecemeal form in the fragmentary form, to draw a firm conclusion about work-life integration policies and their parallelism with job engagement and organizational effectiveness. Furthermore, this study intends to develop a theoretical framework using Dubin’s methodology on organizational effectiveness in relation to work-life integration, job contentment and employee engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on systematic literature review of papers reviewed from across databases of Scopus, Emerald, EBSCO and Google Scholar. The keywords used for the search were WLB, work-life integration, job satisfaction, job contentment and organizational effectiveness and also a combination of these words was used to pull down the relevant papers. A systematic literature review was undertaken on the topics of work-life integration, employee engagement and organizational effectiveness. These articles were then read and scanned with the overview on abstract and further these articles were selected on the basis of relevance to the current study. Those articles which showed interconnectedness between the identified variables of organizational effectiveness in relation to work-life integration, job contentment and employee engagement as antecedents were reviewed and a theoretical framework model is put forth using first part of Dubin’s methodology (1978) for theory building. The posited Model named A4 on organizational effectiveness using deductive approach is built on constructs, interaction, logic and propositions (Whetten, 1989).The theory will be functional in nature. With the given wealth of evidence, the injecting effect of work-life integration on employee engagement and pouring impact on organizational effectiveness becomes more transparent and clear. The authors have proposed a model for better organizational effectiveness through work-life integration policies.

Findings

One of the essential ingredients for better employee engagement is work-life integration policies, and organizational effectiveness becomes the by-product of the same. Innovative and friendly WLB policies assist employees to be more productive, dedicated and committed, resulting in better employee engagement which in the long run benefits the company in terms of effectiveness. WLB policies help to flatter down the burgeoning impact of complex work life on employee productivity and engagement. This paper concludes on the healing effects of WLB policies on employee engagement and organizational effectiveness and also proposes a model at the end. The posited model presents the antecedents for achieving organizational effectiveness.

Research limitations/implications

Because the study is conceptual in nature with the proposed model, more empirical-based studies by experts with relevant stakeholders will add more rationalization to the current study.

Originality/value

Organizational effectiveness is the key to survival in today’s complex and competitive world. The authors investigated how organizational effectiveness can be achieved with WLB policies, which can have a linear impact on employee engagement, and ultimately organizations can bear the flowerings of positive output. This linkage and coupling between WLB policies, job contentment, employee engagement and organizational effectiveness deserve attention which the authors have attempted to explore. The outcome and results of the study will contribute to the existing literature in a more meaningful manner and will assist human resource development and policymakers to achieve organizational goals with driving employees. Managers will gain insight into the identified theoretical framework model for its implementation in organization. Future researchers with empirical studies can test the proposed theory to determine its success at organizational level.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between corporate governance (CG) and performance of Real Estate Investment Trust (REITs) in Singapore and Malaysia.

Design/methodology/approach

The CG attributes that contribute best toward R-Index scores are tested followed by analysis of whether R-Index scores contribute toward better performance of the REITs when controlled for growth, firm size and leverage. Regression analysis using structured equation modeling (SEM) is instituted.

Findings

All attributes in the R-Index except management ownership are significantly correlated to R-Index. Regression analysis using SEM reveals that all the three measures of performance are significant. When controlled for growth and firm size, CG mechanisms reduce the impact of losses. However, highly levered firms could be risky for investors despite strong CG mechanisms.

Research limitations/implications

All S-REITs and M-REIT sampled were grouped as one regardless of the country differences, which may have limited the results and findings. The R-Index used to score the CG practices for Asia is still very new.

Practical implications

Findings of the study will help REIT policymakers to update scorecards frequently. Loss-making REITs must emphasize on specific CG attributes to enhance their overall CG scores to gain market confidence and procure financial assistance through better disclosure.

Originality/value

Due to research scarcity on CG effectiveness associated with performance of Asian REITs after the global financial crisis, this study comes as a timely contribution in understanding the relationship between CG and performance of REITs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide an analysis of National Accountability Ordinance 1999 (NAO) after June 2022 amendments. It raises a key question whether the new legislation is effective and improves anti-corruption operating system in Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper performs an analysis of recent amendments incorporated in NAO from the observations of superior courts, United Nations Corruption Convention and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidelines and also evaluates new legislation in terms of effectiveness in anti-corruption campaign.

Findings

This paper finds that ample amendments are inessential, and thus may largely jeopardize accountability process; changes appear to be intentionally crafted to benefit some selected group of people: the definition of asset is compressed; the onus of proof is shifted on the informer; and provisions of money trail, foreign evidence and protection of approver are abolished; such changes defy to the UN Corruption Convention and FATF guidelines. A legislation endorsed from all stakeholders is suggested; additionally, improved strategies proposed to strengthen accountability process while keeping in view the constitutional issues relevant in the course of anti-corruption investigations.

Originality/value

This paper is unique in the context of the anti-corruption strategies in Pakistan, highlighting the legal laxness of new government regarding corruption and money laundering.

Abstract

Purpose

The research examines how the principle of Dharma can be included in the Indian National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The study seeks to know how Dharma as an educational framework can be infused with contemporary education to promote moral and ethical development as well as intellectual growth among students in India.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses qualitative analysis of NEP 2020 documents and literature related to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and the concept of Dharma. It analyses the philosophical bases behind NEP including traditional texts like Vedas, Upanishads, among others. Moreover, this study also evaluates how current Dharma teachings are implemented into curriculum by assessing its present status of incorporation as a part of Indian Knowledge System.

Findings

This research has found that national educational reforms have considered many traditional Indian beliefs and values, but they have not done enough when it comes to incorporating Indian Knowledge System and the concept of Dharma into practice through the curriculum. The paper advocates for a system that is grounded on morals, thus blending the current learning standards with cultural heritage. These findings call for continuous endeavouring in order to embed ethical and moral dimensions of Dharma across all levels within India’s education systems.

Practical implications

The integration of Dharma and IKS in education can enhance the development of well-rounded individuals who are not only intellectually competent but also ethically and morally grounded. This strong foundation of Dharma will also act as a personal and professional guide. Educators and policymakers can use these insights to design curricula that promote holistic growth, aligning with both global educational standards and cultural values.

Originality/value

This paper examines the philosophical and ethical foundation of NEP 2020 instead of only considering its pedagogical and skill-enhancement characteristics, thereby giving a fresh viewpoint. It contributes to the discussion on educational reforms in India by highlighting how present educational needs should be linked with traditional values. The research shows that the concept of dharma can help learners develop holistically so that they can meet present-day problems without losing touch with timeless morals.
