Abstract

There is little published work regarding value and waste in UK housebuilding supply chains. In this paper, we review the current status of research in supply chains generally and housebuilding supply chains specifically. The “wastes” and “values” within housebuilding supply chains are identified and categorized and some key potential improvement methodologies are proposed. Starting from the concepts of “value” and “waste”, relevant supply chain models are evaluated and a case study is used to suggest improvements towards a more efficient housebuilding supply chain. Finally, we present a template for waste detection in housebuilding supply chains.

Abstract

“We have attempted … to present a unified approach to the application of the finite difference calculus to many structural engineering problems of practical interest”. In these words, the authors describe how they have set out to cover the comparatively recent development of the application of the calculus of finite differences to the analysis of complex structures. Beyond touching on mathematical preliminaries, the book concentrates virtually entirely on the application of finite difference equations to specific and practical problem areas under such headings as beams on equidistant supports, plane uniform gridworks, stiffened plates and ring‐stiffened cylindrical shells.

ALL activities in children's libraries are designed to increase the use and knowledge of books, so that children will learn to read for enjoyment and so that books will help the child's development and education. Libraries are in a privileged position and their activities should be directed in such a way that they are not merely an extension of the school curriculum, nor only recreational. This can be achieved by other media not related to books or knowledge.

Abstract

For thirty years or so the Middlesex County Council, through its Public Control Department, has persistently tried to protect purchasers of fish from malpractices in the retail fish trade. It would be incorrect to suggest that no other Food and Drugs Authority has tried to do the same, but it is evident that in many areas there has been little or no overt sign of similar activity. Recently there was a Middlesex prosecution in which the owners of a restaurant were fined £2, with £4 costs, for supplying fried dabs described on the menu as plaice. This aroused the ire of a Mr. Ralph A. Hadrill, who wrote to The Times a letter severely criticising the Council. To that letter pride of place on the leader page was given by the Editor of The Times. Two days later, four further letters were printed on this intriguing subject. One writer expressed the view that some purchasers prefer dabs to plaice in the spring. The Chairman of the Middlesex General Purposes Committee strongly criticised Mr. Hadrill, and emphatically denied that his Council was wasting the ratepayers' money. On the contrary, he claimed that the Council provides purchasers of fish with very necessary protection at a most economical cost.

Synopsis

This case presents turnaround alternatives for a UK-based company, Carpets International (CI), a manufacturer focused on woven carpets and suffering from the ageing equipment and resulting product quality issues during the late 1990s. The case profiles CI’s position in the UK marketplace as well as highlights the growing international competition from Europe and Mexico. Comparisons between customer’s preferences for carpeting in the USA vs the UK are included. Additionally, the case introduces first-mover advantages in the application of innovational ideas applied to a mature industry in another country.

Research methodology

This case study was written by the CEO of the company as the lead author. The case is not disguised.

Abstract

This chapter adds to emerging research exploring the construct of joy by drawing attention to the value of more loving stakeholder relationships. Relationship management research has focussed attention on the antecedents, outcomes and quality of an organization's relationships with various publics and stakeholders and has examined strategies that can nurture these relationships. However, not much of this research has addressed intimacy and passion in these relationships.

Accordingly, this chapter draws on the theory of brand love developed in relationship marketing research and the theory of love from psychological research to build a theoretical framework of organization–stakeholder love (OSL) that can be applied to organizational relationships with publics and stakeholders. An OSL framework switches emphasis from how organizations can attract stakeholder affection (e.g., love) towards organizations to how organizations can and should love their stakeholders. The proposition put forward in this chapter is that OSL can and should become a driving force behind organizations' interactions with stakeholders, thus contributing to ethical public relations practices.

OSL is important because it has the potential to contribute to addressing public relations' image problems (e.g., relating to terms such as spin and corporate greenwashing); it offers a new love orientation that guides organizations towards a focus on the primacy of stakeholder needs and values, which in turn may shape the way organizations initiate and manage relationships with stakeholders. This chapter concludes with practical ways to implement OSL and a research agenda suggesting ways OSL may open up new research opportunities in public relations.

Abstract

Empirically examines the managerial perception of consumerism with reference to the very different macro environments of two countries – Australia and Bangladesh. Consumerism is defined as a social movement seeking to augment the rights and powers of buyers in relation to sellers. The attitudes of a sample of CEOs towards various aspects of consumerism are analyzed. The results of ANOVA indicate that there are statistically significant differences between the two groups of managers in terms of their commitment to consumerism on such issues as government regulation, advertising to children, the role of consumer organization and industry self‐regulation. Interestingly, Bangladeshi managers perceived most of the consumerism issues at a higher level than their Australian counterparts. There are interesting interpretations and implications of these findings for firms operating at the international level. These are explored here. Also explores the potential of future research in this area.

OUR readers do not need the reminder that 1952 is the 75th year of Library Association history. Some opportunity may be found at the Bournemouth Conference to celebrate this fact, in however modest a manner. The American Library Association, older by a year, celebrated its anniversary at Philadelphia last October, on which occasion Mr. F. G. B. Hutchings represented this country and spoke at a luncheon meeting to three hundred of the guests with acceptance. That celebration, however, appears to us to have been most significant for the comment on the Carnegie library gifts which was made by Mr. Ralph Munn, librarian of Pittsburgh Carnegie Library, in some ways the most spectacular one founded by the great Scot.
