Abstract

Purpose

The fatigue, thermal and wear-based bearing lives are the most important factors in the design of spherical roller bearings (SRBs). The main novelty of the present work is consideration of thermal effects as an additional objective function. The dynamic capacity (Cd), the elasto-hydrodynamic minimum film thickness (hmin) and the maximum bearing temperature (Tmax) are related directly with overall lives of the bearing, and these constitute the multiple tasking operating requirements for the design of bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

These tasks depend upon various bearing design variables and associated constraints to help in formulating the realistic design optimization problem and in the present work these have been used to get optimal designs of SRBs in the form of Pareto-optimum fronts by using genetic algorithms.

Findings

The optimized lives show higher values as compared to the standard lives and better design choices as compared to that are available in the literature. The robustness of obtained designs are shown by conducting the sensitivity analysis of optimized operating requirements by perturbing optimum bearing variables.

Research limitations/implications

The robustness of the design could be improved by optimizing tolerances of design variables based on desired variation in multiple tasking operating requirements.

Practical implications

For the aerospace and space applications such critical design of bearings are required based on multiple tasking operating requirements. For example for higher temperature application in gearboxes, turbines and drilling equipment.

Originality/value

In critical applications, multiple tasking operating requirements are essential and often bearings put limit to the life of satellites and aircraft, and bearing design methodology proposed and implemented in the present paper addresses these issues, especially addition of thermal issue in bearing design.

Abstract

Purpose

In optimum designs of deep-groove ball bearings (DDGBs), an extended service life is one of the vital criteria. The life of a bearing depends on several factors. The purpose of this paper is to sequentially optimize three prime objectives for DDGB, i.e. the dynamic capacity (Cd), the maximum bearing temperature (Tmax) and the elasto-hydrodynamic minimum film thickness (Hmin).

Design/methodology/approach

For solving constrained non-linear optimization formulations with multitude of objectives, an optimal design methodology has been put forth with the help of artificial bee colony algorithms. A study on the constraint violation has been carried out. By the Monte Carlo simulation method, a sensitivity investigation of diverse design variables has been done to examine variations in three objective functions and violation of constraints.

Findings

Excellent improvement in the dynamic capacity (Cd), the maximum bearing temperature (Tmax) and the elasto-hydrodynamic minimum film thickness (Hmin) have been found in optimized bearing designs.

Originality/value

Ball bearing design has been done based on multi-discipline objectives that are based on strength, tribology and thermal consideration. This type of design is essential in practical scenario where these physical phenomena will be present simultaneously.

Abstract

Purpose

This qualitative research examines the varied reasons for relocation to old age homes (OAHs) in contemporary India. The purpose of this study investigates the acceptance of institutional living in Lucknow (a Tier II city of India) and whether migration to OAHs is a voluntary decision. This study also examines the lifeworld of the older adult in these OAHs in an attempt to find out whether OAHs are conducive to positive ageing. Derivatively, the authors study their engagement/time use pattern and social networking patterns in the OAHs. Finally, the research seeks to learn whether OAHs are slowly substituting older adult care given within the family by offering the best of the facilities and services.

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative research was conducted in two private OAHs in Lucknow, India. The findings of the study are based on 28 qualitative interviews conducted with the inmates, administrative staff and caretakers. The interviews were unstructured and open-ended and were supported by observations. The observation was not only made of the social setting but also the reaction of the participants. The idea was to develop an emic view of the subject by exploring valid narratives. Pseudonyms were used to report the finding so as to maintain the confidentiality of the research subjects.

Findings

This research moves beyond the traditional wisdom that people move to OAH because of the push factors within the family. OAHs in India have evolved over the years and high-end OAHs are equipped with modern amenities to cater to the upper class in their twilight years. Residents were found to lead active lives in OAHs and their common habitus and bonding capital helped them to face the vagaries of old age more confidently. Their active life and membership in various civic organizations challenge the contention of the role theory that the aged are more prone to lose rather than gain roles.

Originality/value

The originality of the research lies in the fact that the authors are extending the arguments made by the role theory of social ageing. The theory proposes that aged people are more likely to lose out roles rather than gain new ones. This study finds that the elderly tend to live a very active life in OAHs and engaged various civic organizations. Although they may lose/voluntarily give up the roles like the head of the household, spouse, etc., they acquire new roles in the context of OAHs.

Case overview

PKC Laundries started a technology-driven laundry service that would be just a click away for their customers and would provide a quick and satisfying cost-effective solution to the customers’ laundry needs. The business, conceived as a start-up, was based on the asset-light aggregation model which used existing vendors to provide the service. The business has been running for almost two years now but has encountered certain operational challenges of vendor management and in generating sufficient operating profits. At this juncture, the question that is bothering the owners is would it be right if PKC went in for backward integration by investing in an automatic laundry plant to manage the risk of dependency on their vendors or should they strengthen and scale-up the present business model? The owners seem to be in a muddle about their strengths and weaknesses and the foreseeable opportunities and threats and going forward what sort of challenges should they prepare themselves for? This case requires the reader to understand the scenario in which a small and medium enterprise (SME) operates within its micro and macro environment. It then makes the reader think and critically analyse the dilemma the young entrepreneurs are facing and identify the problems and possible strategies to overcome these problems. The case highlights the challenges faced by PKC as an aggregator business and the scope of what PKC can do in the future to strengthen its position. It also explores various marketing management issues such as segmenting, targeting and positioning. The case also helps in understanding strategic management issues such as analysis and formulation and implementation of the strategy.

Expected learning outcomes

The expected learning outcomes are as follows: To understand the micro and macro environmental factors affecting a firm; to understand the issues involved in formulating and implementing a strategy; to understand the challenges faced by a start-up (both operational and for scaling up); and to understand the strategies adopted by the company to develop their business.

Abstract

Purpose

Achieving tenure security is a global challenge impacting cities of the global south. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the role of technology-enabled solutions as an enabler for the tenure rights of slum dwellers.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, we adopted a case study approach to analyze the use cases for technologies aiding India’s securitization of land tenure. The flagship state mission of Odisha, named the Jaga Mission, and that of Punjab, named BASERA – the Chief Minister’s Slum Development Program – were used as cases for this paper.

Findings

It was found that technologies like drone imagery and digital surveys fast-tracked the data collection and helped in mapping the slums with accuracy, mitigating human errors arising during measurement – a necessary condition for ensuring de jure tenure security. The adoption of a technology-based solution, along with a suitable policy and legal framework, has helped in the distribution of secure land titles to the slum dwellers in these states.

Originality/value

Odisha’s and Punjab’s journey in using technology to enable tenure security for its urban poor residents can serve as a model for the cities of the global south, dealing with the challenges of providing secure tenure and property rights.

Abstract

Using the most recent dataset from 2013–2014 to 2017–2018, the study examines the efficiency of 75 coal-fired power plants in the Indian thermal power sector. The authors obtained robust estimates of efficiency scores by employing Seiford and Zhu’s (2002) DEA-based classification invariance technique to account for CO2 emissions as an undesirable output. Meta-frontier analysis and the Tobit regression are used to compute technology heterogeneity across power plants belonging to public and private groups and investigate the factors driving carbon-adjusted efficiency, respectively. The results reveal that, on average, the efficiency of power plants during the study period is 78.26%, showing significant room for reduction in CO2 emissions alongside augmentation in electricity generation. Private plants are more efficient than public ones, and relative performance inefficiency is the primary source of inefficiency in the thermal power sector. Regression analysis indicates that domestic-equipped plants perform with lesser levels of efficiency, and plants with more units are more inefficient than plants with fewer units. Carbon productivity significantly improves efficiency since fewer fossil fuels with high carbon will generate more electricity.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess housing affordability and estimate demand using a hedonic regression model in the context of Lucknow city, India. This study assesses housing affordability by considering various housing and household-related variables. This study focuses on the impoverished urban population, as they experience the most severe housing scarcity. This study’s primary objective is to understand the demand dynamics within the market comprehensively. An understanding of housing demand can be achieved through an examination of its characteristics and components. Individuals consider the implicit values associated with various components when deciding to purchase or rent a home. The components and characteristics have been obtained from variables relating to housing and households.

Design/methodology/approach

A socioeconomic survey was conducted for 450 households from slums in Lucknow city. Two-stage regression models were developed for this research paper. A hedonic price index was prepared for the first model to understand the relationship between housing expenditure and various housing characteristics. The housing characteristics considered for the hedonic model are dwelling unit size, typology, condition, amenities and infrastructure. In the second stage, a regression model is created between household characteristics. The household characteristics considered for the demand estimation model are household size, age, education, social category, income, nonhousing expenditure, migration and overcrowding.

Findings

Based on the findings of regression model results, it is evident that the hedonic model is an effective tool for the estimation of housing affordability and housing demand for urban poor. Various housing and household-related variables affect housing expenditure positively or negatively. The two-stage hedonic regression model can define willingness to pay for a particular set of housing with various attributes of a particular household. The results show the significance of dwelling unit size, quality and amenities (R2 > 0.9, p < 0.05) for rent/imputed rent. The demand function shows that income has a direct effect, whereas other variables have mixed effects.

Research limitations/implications

This study is case-specific and uses a data set generated from a primary survey. Although household surveys for a large sample size are resource-intensive exercises, they provide an opportunity to exploit microdata for a better understanding of the complex housing situation in slums.

Practical implications

All the stakeholders can use the findings to create an effective housing policy. The variables that are statistically significant and have a positive relationship with housing costs should be deliberated upon to provide the basic standard of living for the urban poor. The formulation of policies should duly include the housing preferences of the economically disadvantaged population residing in slum areas.

Originality/value

This paper uses primary survey data (collected by the authors) to assess housing affordability for the urban poor of Lucknow city. It makes the results of the study credible and useful for further applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) is the kingpin of Indian economy. It contributes to 48% of India's exports and provides employment to 110 million people. As a result, it is critical to evaluate the obstacles, expose them and find a way to overcome the crisis due to the pandemic. The study aims to analyse the impact of financial and non-financial measures for the revival of MSME and its impact on firm sustainability and future opportunity as perceived by MSME owners/heads during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Design/methodology/approach

This study, based on a cross-sectional survey of 197 export-oriented Indian MSMEs, attempts to investigate covid crisis mitigation strategies/measures in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model was applied to check model fit, and structural equation modelling (SEM) was employed for data analysis.

Findings

The results of this study show the financial and non-financial revival measures such as firm revival, marketing training, customer relationship management (CRM), financial incentive and firm support, extending worker social security and financial access and price control positively impact MSMEs' business sustainability and future opportunity as perceived by the respondents that lent good support to the hypothesis.

Research limitations/implications

The study emphasizes management in association with government and financial institutions to design short-term as well as long-term strategies that may enhance their sustainability in the market. MSMEs are being forced to reassess their business strategy and modify their operating model as a result of the uncertain/unpredictable climate. Many levels of strategy aid in revitalizing the company and providing future possibilities to move forward if the government schemes positively impact the perception of entrepreneurs. Further, the study identifies the immediate measures to tide over the crisis over this sector and then furnishes recommendations for closing the identified gaps in the present understanding.

Originality/value

The impact of COVID-19 on Indian MSMEs and how these MSMEs are dealing with it are highlighted in this paper, which is quite scarce and insufficient to cover the gap. It also provides a comprehensive view of firm sustainability and perceived opportunity among MSMEs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to know the influence of heat generation/absorption and slip effects on heat and mass transfer flow of carbon nanotubes – water-based nanofluid over a rotating disk. Two types of carbon nanotubes, single and multi-walled, are considered in this analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The non-dimensional system of governing equations is constructed using compatible transformations. These equations together with boundary conditions are solved numerically by using the most prominent Finite element method. The influence of various pertinent parameters such as magnetic parameter (0.4 – 1.0), nanoparticle volume fraction parameter (0.1 – 0.6), porosity parameter (0.3 – 0.6), radiation parameter (0.1 – 0.4), Prandtl number (2.2 – 11.2), space-dependent (−3.0 – 3.0), temperature-dependent (−3.0 – 1.5), velocity slip parameter (0.1 – 1.0), thermal slip parameter (0.1 – 0.4) and chemical reaction parameter (0.3 – 0.6) on nanofluids velocity, temperature and concentration distributions, as well as rates of velocity, temperature and concentration is calculated and the results are plotted through graphs and tables. Also, a comparative analysis is carried out to verify the validation of the present numerical code and found good agreement.

Findings

The results indicate that the temperature of the fluid elevates with rising values of nanoparticle volume fraction parameter. Furthermore, the rates of heat transfer rise from 4.8% to 14.6% when carbon nanotubes of 0.05 volume fraction are suspended into the base fluid.

Originality/value

The work carried out in this analysis is original and no part is copied from other sources.
