Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to introduce an intelligent recognition system for viewpoint variations of gait and speech. It proposes a convolutional neural network-based capsule network (CNN-CapsNet) model and outlining the performance of the system in recognition of gait and speech variations. The proposed intelligent system mainly focuses on relative spatial hierarchies between gait features in the entities of the image due to translational invariances in sub-sampling and speech variations.
Design/methodology/approach
This proposed work CNN-CapsNet is mainly used for automatic learning of feature representations based on CNN and used capsule vectors as neurons to encode all the spatial information of an image by adapting equal variances to change in viewpoint. The proposed study will resolve the discrepancies caused by cofactors and gait recognition between opinions based on a model of CNN-CapsNet.
Findings
This research work provides recognition of signal, biometric-based gait recognition and sound/speech analysis. Empirical evaluations are conducted on three aspects of scenarios, namely fixed-view, cross-view and multi-view conditions. The main parameters for recognition of gait are speed, change in clothes, subjects walking with carrying object and intensity of light.
Research limitations/implications
The proposed CNN-CapsNet has some limitations when considering for detecting the walking targets from surveillance videos considering multimodal fusion approaches using hardware sensor devices. It can also act as a pre-requisite tool to analyze, identify, detect and verify the malware practices.

Originality/value
This proposed research work proves to be performing better for the recognition of gait and speech when compared with other techniques.

Abstract
Purpose – This study investigates the sociodemographics, late entry to antiretroviral therapy (ART), and clinical markers associated with AIDS-related mortality.
Methodology/Approach – Applying retrospective cohort design, 960 medical records of people who died of AIDS, from October 2006 to December 2014, were accessed from the ART center at tertiary health care center of Ranchi (India).
Findings – With useable data from 889 medical records revealed that the majority of people who died of AIDS consisted of married males in the age group of 19–40 years who were truck drivers, migrant laborers, and of rural origins. The median survival period was below 3 months following the ART. Males and people on the pre-ART group had a shorter survival period than their counterparts. Early mortality was associated with lower CD4+ T cell counts, the third or fourth clinical stage, ambulatory or bed-ridden functional status, and poor medication adherence.
Research limitations/implications – This study was limited to the analysis of AIDS deceased people only; it did not compare the survival duration with living people on ART. The lower CD4+ T cell counts and medication adherence, being strong predictors of mortality, can be addressed to attain higher survival rates of people who have AIDS.
Originality/Value of Paper – This is the first study conducted in the tribal-populated region, covering a large sample of 889 cases. Unique findings of this study update the existing data on AIDS-related mortality.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study of a global challenge: the relationship between commercial development and the protection of eco-fragile systems particularly where river water is involved. It reviews and critiques the legal and political processes that underpinned the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2010 in Delhi and the building of the accommodation Village on the floodplain of the river Yamuna.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper covers the controversial modern history of the Yamuna river that runs through Delhi. The river is “dead” and has been subject to litigation concerning its usage and that of its flood plain. In particular, the controversy peaked prior to the CWG 2010 in Delhi and the required buildings associated with the games. The paper traces the history of the legal actions and the inter-related involvement of the various actors being the politicians, construction developers, the river bank dwellers and the local environmentalists. Close analysis is made of the statutory administrative procedures required for environmental clearance, the subsequent case law both in the High Court of Delhi and the Supreme Court of India. Additionally, usage is made of the media and its concerns over corrupt and negligent practices.
Findings
The Indian judiciary in their willingness to promote the construction of the Village failed to apply its own environmental jurisprudence. There was a failure to “lift the veil” and review flawed administrative practices that violated governing statutes. National pride, time pressures, political support, economic interests and rapid urbanisation created a pressure that the courts could not challenge. It was left to investigative committees, after the Games had concluded, to expose these wrongdoings.
Originality/value
The paper highlights the issue of the relationship of the courts and political and economic interests and how legally protected ecological interests are ignored.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to explore the mediation effect of volatile economic conditions on performance benefits of successful kean manufacturing implementation (LMI). The mediating factor of economic volatility (EV) is constructed based on four macroeconomic dimensions – supplier uncertainty, market demand fluctuations, governmental policy changes and peer competition.
Design/methodology/approach
An attempt is made to build an exhaustive list of the internal operational manifests grouped into one human and three technical input factors. Similarly the benefits accrued are collated under two performance measures – customer satisfaction (CS) and organizational goal satisfaction (OGS). Based on data from the Indian manufacturing sector, structural equation modelling (SEM) and ordinary least square (OLS) analyses are carried out to validate the proposed model.
Findings
Results of the structural model validate the first six hypotheses posited in the model. Results of OLS further reveal the mediation effect of EV having negative impact on LMI–CS and LMI–OGS nexus.
Practical implications
This research offers a fair understanding of the internal operational lean factors and the effect of volatile macroeconomic conditions on lean benefits. The structural model will aid the academicians and lean implementers comprehend the dimensional structure underlying the lean practices and beliefs. This work further helps to understand the moderation effect of environmental complexity on the output measures of LMI in the Indian manufacturing sector.
Originality/value
This work is one of the very first empirical analyses of lean performance under contingent economic conditions. The paper presents a valuable recommendation to practitioners for considering the dynamism of external economic environment instead of simply adopting standalone internal lean parameters, if satisfactory levels of performance in terms of CS and OGS are to be achieved.
