Abstract

Purpose

Reverse supply chain (RSC) is one of the ways to handle product returns efficiently. Recovery of residual value from product returns also helps in achieving sustainability. Its successful implementation requires coordination among all the channel members involved in the activities, from the acquisition to collection to the disposition of returned products. This article aims to review the literature about coordination issues in the RSC.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of 151 articles published during 2004–2021 is carried out. Theory, context and methodology (TCM) framework of the literature review is used to identify the research gaps for future research directions.

Findings

This study identifies the characteristics of RSC coordination. It includes channel structures; coordination mechanisms; performance measuring parameters; the methodology applied and explored industries. The review shows that game-theoretical modeling in RSC coordination is the most commonly used method to coordinate the channels. It was found that issues like disruption, fairness and corporate social responsibility are not explored in-depth and offer much potential for future research.

Originality/value

There are very limited studies on coordination issues in the RSC. The proposed articles add value by considering RSC issues from different strategic, government, consumers' behavior and functionality decision-making point of view.

Abstract

Purpose

Owing to its leverage of high deposition rate, the wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process is being adopted for the development of IN718 alloy used in aerospace, transportation and energy sectors. The purpose of this study is to observe the effect of process parameters on the mechanical properties of the IN718 superalloy.

Design/methodology/approach

This study emphasizes the effect of WAAM process parameters on mechanical and metallurgical properties of developed multilayer structures of IN718 alloy by means of orthogonally designed experiments.

Findings

The results show that high current and voltage settings, combined with low welding speed, provide increase bead width, height and effective wall area, while resulting in decrease surface waviness, hardness and tensile properties. The scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy results show the presence of secondary precipitates such as NbC and Ni3(Al, Ti) in low-heat samples, which improve the mechanical properties of the material. However, the presence of Laves phases deteriorates the mechanical properties in high-heat samples. The electron backscatter diffraction results confirmed the presence of more grain boundaries and highly textured surfaces in lower heat samples, which improves mechanical properties.

Originality/value

The effect of process parameters on the microstructural features and mechanical properties along with bead characteristic are studied in-depth and influence of each parameter are discussed.

Abstract

Learning outcomes

This case can be used to highlight aspects of strategic management, such as industry analysis as well as country competitiveness. After working through the case and assignment questions, the students will be able to analyse the competitiveness of – the green hydrogen industry in India – while comparing key structural elements with international benchmarks with European Union and China; examine the strategy of India’s Ministry of New and Renewal Energy an anchor entity implementing India’s National Green Hydrogen mission; assess the recent strategy of India’s ministry of new and renewal energy implementing Indian Government’s National Green Hydrogen Mission to contribute to India’s sustainability and climate goals including net zero targets, and motivations for the shift and its fit with the broader external environment; and suggest recommendations that might help Indian Government in achieving its strategic goals of improving India’s competitiveness in green hydrogen energy industry.

Case overview/synopsis

This case, based on actual events, described a situation faced by Raj Kumar Singh, the Cabinet Minister for Power & New & Renewable Energy, Government of India. The “National Green Hydrogen Mission”, launched by the Government of India in January 2023, is seen as a strategic endeavour to position India at the forefront of green hydrogen production globally. The budget allocated for the mission is $2.4bn (INR 19,744 Cr) until FY 2029–2030, and it aspires to stimulate the paradigm shift in India’s energy landscape. The mission seeks to reduce India’s dependence on its energy imports by capitalizing green hydrogen’s potential, lowering the production cost to $1 per kg by 2030, and develop a formidable 5 million metric tons (MMT) annual production capacity with potential expansion to 10 MMT. The success of the mission is dependent of several key factors like decrease in production costs, advancements in electrolyser technology, support system of the government and the strategic collaborations. However, the path towards mission’s success faces challenges such as infrastructure development, storage and distribution. Despite these challenges, the government is determined in its commitment to scale up green hydrogen production, positioning India as a global center for this sustainable energy source. This case provides a rich context for discussions on how policy, technical and economic factors will interact for shaping the future of green hydrogen industry in India.

Abstract

Purpose: The study is focussed on redesigning work and green job structures for organisational sustainability. The contribution of this chapter is two-fold: HR practices can be redesigned to incorporate eco-friendly principles into job roles and explore green human resource management (HRM) as innovative approaches that organisations can adopt to promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices within their workforce.

Need of study: The study on green HRM and job redesign is crucial for organisations to align operations with environmental sustainability. It addresses the need for practical guidelines and strategies for implementing sustainable practices. With increasing emphasis on corporate social responsibility and stakeholder demand, this study is essential for organisations to enhance their reputation, attract environmentally conscious talent, and positively impact society and the environment.

Methodology: The chapter is conceptually oriented; the data utilised in this study will primarily rely on secondary sources.

Findings: The findings demonstrated that adopting green HRM practices can help businesses improve their environmental performance and employee satisfaction. These procedures also allow the organisation to remain sustainable, guaranteeing its long-term success.

Practical implications: Humans know that redesigned work and job structures in green HRM can allow staff members to learn new sustainability-related skills and knowledge, boosting their professional growth and future employability. Abstract

This chapter presents the e-marketing practices followed by the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It explored the owner-managers perceptions of MSMEs regarding their average expenditures, budget allocations, management, policy, sources of information, return on investment and their desire for formal training on e-marketing activities in future. Data were collected from 253 MSME owner-managers through an e-questionnaire. The researchers found that the majority of the MSME owner-managers allocate a monthly budget for e-marketing initiatives, and they have increased it over the past few years. However, the total expenditure on e-marketing activities is between 1% and 10% of their total marketing budget. These businesses are partly or fully outsourcing search engine optimization (SEO), display advertising and referral marketing, whereas other e-marketing activities are managed in-house. Generally, these MSMEs are not measuring the success of their digital marketing efforts. If they do it, they are not doing it in a professional manner. MSMEs were found to be slow in posting content and engaging their followers on social media. Surprisingly, two-third of the MSMEs that participated in this study did not show any desire to pursue courses in digital marketing. In conclusion, this study puts forward key implications to practitioners as well as to the government agencies that are involved in the promotion of information technology among MSMEs.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to investigate the factors of loan access that affect entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) and operating efficiency of Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Furthermore, the study intended to investigate the influence of ESE on the operating efficiency of Indian MSMEs and its mediating role.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, exploratory research design is used. The study heavily relies on the primary data which has been collected by using the survey research method from a cross-section of 617 women-owned MSMEs, located in urban, rural, suburban and exurban areas of Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and NCR-Delhi. The partial least square structural equation modeling method version 3.3.3 has been used to evaluate.

Findings

In terms of the selected factors affecting access to finance, it has been established that the Loan Formalities, Banking Process, Loan Process, Staff Responsiveness and Incentive Scheme have a positive and significant influence in enhancing accessibility to finance and improving the self-efficacy and operating performance of firms. The findings also show that ESE mediates the relationship between various factors of loan access and the operating efficiency of MSMEs.

Research limitations/implications

The study’s findings show that entrepreneurial capacity is significantly and favorably impacted by attitudes toward entrepreneurship, ESE, perceived access to findings and business operations. It has also been demonstrated that entrepreneurial intentions are strongly and favorably influenced by entrepreneurial ability to access commercial bank financing for small businesses and the impact of the same on the women-owned MSMEs in India. It also revealed unfavorable loan terms, limited collateral, fear of repaying of loan and intricate loan application were among the many reasons for loan denial.

Originality/value

The study offers a comprehensive approach that simultaneously considers financial accessibility and ESE. This all-encompassing method offers a thorough grasp of the variables affecting MSMEs' operational efficiency (OE). In contrast to earlier research that might have concentrated only on direct relationships, this study explores the mediating mechanisms involved. This study examines how ESE modulates the influence of financing availability on OE, providing a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms. By taking into account particular MSME sector characteristics like size, industry or regional variations, the study may provide a unique contextual lens. Understanding how these contextual factors interact with entrepreneurial attributes and access to finance adds depth to the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to investigate and clarify how the triple helix actors can effectively implement the concepts of Kaizen to navigate and overcome the complex obstacles brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach

Through broad literature reviews, nine common parameters under triple helix actor have been recognized. A regression analysis has been done to study how the triple helix actors’ common parameters impact Kaizen implementation in business operations.

Findings

The results of this study revealed insightful patterns in the relationships between the common parameters of triple helix actor and the dependent variables. Notably, the results also showed that leadership commitment (LC) emerges as a very significant component, having a big impact on employee engagement as well as organizational performance.

Research limitations/implications

In addition to offering valuable insights, this study has limitations including the potential for response bias in survey data and the focus on a specific set of common parameters, which may not encompass the entirety of factors influencing Kaizen implementation within the triple helix framework during the pandemic.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in its comprehensive exploration of the interplay between triple helix actors and Kaizen principles in addressing COVID-19 challenges. By identifying and analyzing nine specific common parameters, the study provides a novel framework for understanding how triple helix actors collaboratively enhance organizational performance and employee engagement during challenging times.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify and prioritize the key practices and strategies for effective global sourcing and supply chain management (SCM).

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a combination of Pareto analysis and multi-objective optimization based on ratio analysis research methodology to analyze and establish the relationships among the identified key practices and strategies. Pareto analysis enables organization to prioritize organizational efforts and resources by focusing on the most critical factors.

Findings

The study shows that the “eco-friendly sourcing strategy”, “lean manufacturing” and “tool cost analysis” are the top critical practices and strategy variables for global sourcing and SCM, whereas the “risk management”, “procurement strategy” and “leverage digital solutions” are the critical practices and strategy variables.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this research can also assist organizations in making informed decisions to optimize their global sourcing and supply chain operations.

Originality/value

By using these methods, this research paper gives valuable insights into the critical practices and strategies that can enhance efficiency, mitigate risks and drive success in global sourcing and SCM. The subjects and elements this study identified will serve as a framework and suggestions for further theoretical investigation and real-world implementations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the relationship between patient satisfaction (PS) and the parameters in healthcare and supply chain management (HLSCM).

Design/methodology/approach

The structural equation modeling (SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) method have been employed to identify correlation and possible configuration of causal factors that influence PS, including lack of resilience (LS), lack of visibility (LV), cost management (CM) and integration and interoperability (II).

Findings

The results from SEM confirmed that PS is highly correlated with lack of visibility, CM and II as critical parameters. Moreover, fsQCA findings state that the configuration of high levels of both resilience and lack of visibility, as well as high levels of II, are crucial for PS.

Research limitations/implications

The researchers also identified the configuration of factors that lead to low PS. The study’s results could assist healthcare providers in improving their supply chain operations, resulting in more effective and efficient healthcare service delivery and ultimately improving PS.

Originality/value

The fsQCA method used in the study provides a more nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between these factors. The inclusion of supply chain management characteristics as parameters in the evaluation of PS is a novel aspect of this research. Previous studies largely focused on more traditional factors such as physical care, waiting times and hospital amenities. By considering supply chain management factors, this study provides insights into an under-explored area of PS research, which has important implications for healthcare providers looking to improve their operations and PS.
