Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the consequences of workplace violence against healthcare staff in Jordanian public hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

A convenient sample included 334 physicians and nurses employed in eight different public hospitals, different departments and different working shifts were surveyed by filling the designed questionnaire.

Findings

The findings indicated workplace violence had a clear moderate impact on the respondents’ interaction with patients, performing work responsibilities, ability of making decisions, and professional career. The most frequent workplace violence consequences were damaging staff’s personality and prestige, increasing laziness and unwillingness to serve patients. Workplace violence consequences also included aggressive behavior, fear while dealing with patients, increase job insecurity, and lack of professional responsibility. In addition, demographic variables such as gender, education, job title, working shift, and income showed statistical significant differences in the attitudes of participants toward the consequences of workplace violence.

Practical implications

This study highlighted the necessity of healthcare policy makers and hospital administrators to establish violence free and safe working environments in order to retain qualified healthcare staff that in turn improves the health services quality.

Originality/value

There is a lack of research and documentation on violence in the healthcare settings in developing countries. This study is one of the first to examine the consequences of workplace violence that affect public physicians and nurses.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the level of human resource management difficulties (job suitability, training and development, motivation and performance appraisal) women employees with disabilities face in the Jordanian public sector, the satisfaction of the availability of the work facilities, difficulties they face when interacting with supervisors and colleagues as well as with clients at work.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive analytical approach has been used through designing a questionnaire aimed to examine the study dimensions. A random convenient sample of 306 women with disabilities was chosen. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.

Findings

Analysis revealed that the overall level of human resource management difficulties in the Jordanian public sector as perceived by women with disabilities was moderate (mean = 3). The participants reported a moderate level of assessment (mean = 2.80) about the availability of the work facilities. In addition, they showed a moderate level of satisfaction about both the treatment they receive from supervisors and colleagues as well as from clients with mean values of 2.85 and 2.91, respectively. The participants with physical disability and who hold administrative jobs reported higher level of difficulties of human resources management. Data showed that about 82% of women with disabilities were hired based on a social/humanitarian base instead of merit system.

Practical implications

This study has a significant practical contribution in providing information that will help policy makers and human resource managers to identify job-related difficulties and develop policies and programs to alleviate them to provide a better work environment to integrate employees with disabilities.

Originality/value

This study has a crucial value in filling the knowledge gap in examining the work-life of persons with disabilities in Jordan and in the Arab world.

Abstract

Purpose

Workplace violence against medical staff has become an endemic problem in the healthcare sector in Jordan. This study investigates the perceived main causes of workplace violence (medical staff, administrative, patients, patient's escorts and legislative) against physicians and nurses in public hospitals.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from a convenient random sample of 334 physicians and nurses employed in Jordanian public hospitals. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance were used to answer questions and test hypotheses.

Findings

Findings indicated that the practice of the causes of workplace violence behaviors assessed by the participants is at a moderate level in Jordanian public hospitals with a mean value of 3.26. The causes of violence were reported as most causative to least causative: patient escort (M = 3.60), legislative (M = 3.56), patients (M = 3.40), administrative (M = 3.16) and medical staff related (M = 2.74), respectively. Analysis showed statistical differences in the participants' attitudes toward the causes of workplace violence behaviors due to their gender, job title, education level, experience and income.

Practical implications

This study has a significant practical contribution in providing information about the causes of workplace violence that will help health policymakers and hospital administrators to deter violence against medical staff. To reduce or eliminate the potential causes of violence, several actions can be taken, such as criminalizing violent behaviors, managing work pressure, staff shortages, developing comfortable and secure medical treatment settings, training the medical staff on aggression and stress management, and enhancing their communication skills with patients and their escorts. Findings also highlight the need for hospital management to develop protocols for reporting and dealing with workplace violence.

Originality/value

This is one of the first studies in the Arab context that examines the causes of workplace violence against medical staff.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the attitudes of disabled employees toward availability of work facilities, treatment of other employees, and the working conditions in the Jordanian public sector.

Design/methodology/approach

A purposive sample of disabled public sector employees (198) was selected to participate in the study by filling the designated questionnaire.

Findings

Disabled employees reported a relatively moderate level of satisfaction about the availability of facilities. Also, participants are satisfied with the treatment of their supervisors and colleagues and of the working conditions. Disabled female participants and those who hold graduate degrees reported high-satisfaction level about the treatment they receive from their colleagues at work. The findings also showed that 55 percent of the participants were hired based on humanitarian bases as a result of their disability cases compared with 45 percent who were hired based on their qualifications and merits.

Practical implications

This research significantly contributes to the scarce knowledge that currently exists in the position of disabled employees in the Arab world. Policy makers and human resource managers should develop a clear strategy to provide the facilities for disabled people to accommodate at work. In addition, they should provide professional guidance and rehabilitation training programs aiming to enhance disabled employees’ participation and involvement in the labor market.

Originality/value

The study is one of the first to investigate the status of disabled public sector employees in Jordan and in the Arab world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the acceptance of artificial intelligence devices (AIDs) by customers in banking service encounters using the Artificially Intelligent Device Use Acceptance (AIDUA) model and thus test the validity of the AIDUA model in the context of the banking sector as well as extending the AIDUA model by incorporating two moderator variables, namely technology anxiety and risk aversion by regarding the nature of banking services, which are considered highly risky and technology-intensive.

Design/methodology/approach

About 575 valid face-to-face self-administered surveys were gathered using convenience sampling among real bank customers in Turkey. The structural equation modelling was used to test hypotheses involving both direct and moderation effects.

Findings

The current study has demonstrated that the AIDUA model is valid and reliable for the acceptance of AIDs in banking service encounters by modifying it. The study results have shown that the acceptance process of AIDs for bank customers consists of three phases. Furthermore, the study’s findings have demonstrated that technology anxiety and risk aversion have adverse moderation effects on the relationship between performance expectancy and emotion as well as on the relationship between emotion and willingness to accept AIDs, respectively.

Originality/value

The current study validates the AIDUA model for the banking industry. In addition, the present study is unique compared to other studies conducted in the literature since it applies the AIDUA model to the setting of banking services for the first time by considering the potential effects of two moderators.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate performance and map the science of research on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 31000 standard through published articles. Specifically, this study determines the current state of the art, identifies research gaps and guides future studies related to ISO 31000.

Design/methodology/approach

This work investigates and examines the research papers acquired from the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to obtain relevant papers. Bibliometric analysis using Biblioshiny was conducted to answer the research objectives.

Findings

The results show growing interest in ISO 31000 research but limited interconnectivity among articles. Influential journals have emerged, highlighting key research trends in risk management's (RM) practical application and its significance in organizational decision-making. Key research areas include risk assessment (RA) methods, enterprise RM and system integration, endorsing ISO 31000 as a valuable tool. Future research should prioritize longitudinal studies to track ISO 31000's impact, study effective risk communication strategies, explore sector-specific RM practices and assess ISO 31000's application in emerging technologies.

Research limitations/implications

This research reveals key themes and diverse methods that aid practitioners in customizing industry risk strategies, adapting to emerging trends, engaging global collaboration and improving risk communication. Nevertheless, the study might overlook non-English contributions, urging broader language inclusion for ISO 31000's profundity.

Originality/value

This paper's originality lies in its comprehensive bibliometric analysis of ISO 31000 research, providing valuable insights into the standard's growing significance and global impact. The study identifies key research themes and influential authors, guiding future research and improving RM practices.

Abstract

Purpose

This study seeks to investigate empirically the impact of organizational culture (bureaucratic, innovative, and supportive) and quality improvement practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Data used in this study were obtained through a questionnaire by random sampling, which took place in four large public hospitals, located in Irbid Governorate, Jordan, involving 271 managers, physicians, and nurses.

Findings

Quality improvement practices were measured by 16 statements on a five‐point rating scale. Each of the three types of organizational culture was measured using five items on a five‐point rating scale.

Practical implications

The three types of culture have a significantly positive influence on quality improvement practices, and account for 62 per cent of the variation of quality improvement practices. Compared with bureaucratic and supportive cultures, innovative culture appears to play a stronger role in quality improvement practices. Contrary to expectations, the analysis shows that bureaucratic actions enhance rather than hinder quality improvement practices. Respondents with a bachelor or a higher degree and participating in a training course related to quality reported higher prevalence of each culture and a higher level of quality improvement practices.

Originality/value

Innovative culture has a crucial role in quality improvement practices compared with bureaucratic and supportive cultures.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explored the relationship between employees' cognitive capabilities and firm performance by exploring the moderating role of decision-making style and the mediating effect of knowledge creation. Understanding the role of cognitive capabilities in value creation is crucial for human resource management to achieve the anticipated organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling, cognitive skills theory, cognitive skills acquisition theory and a knowledge creation framework were applied.

Findings

The first finding suggests that only A-shaped skills predict higher knowledge creation, while T-shaped skills do not. Second, knowledge creation predicts higher financial performance and a lower level of financial uncertainty. Third, T-shaped skills have no indirect effect on financial performance or financial uncertainty. Fourth, A-shaped skills exerted significant indirect effects on financial performance and uncertainty. Fifth, the rational decision-making style did not moderate the link between knowledge creation and financial performance, as opposed to the intuitive decision-making style.

Originality/value

A review of existing research indicates a lack of studies examining the effect of cognitive skills on organizational outcomes and contingencies under which cognitive skills lead to superior outcomes. This study advances research on T-shaped and A-shaped skills and knowledge creation by empirically exploring their interrelationships with financial performance. Managerial implications and suggestions for future research are also highlighted.
