Abstract

In signing the treaties establishing the three European Communities—the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) and the European Economic Community (Common Market)—the six member countries have set in motion a complex and far‐reaching process which has already had many repercussions far outside the immediate sectors covered by these formal documents. How far the process will lead, especially in its political implications, we do not yet know, but already the ramifications of integration present many new problems to those concerned with information about its economic consequences.

Abstract

The interesting and well‐informed contributions made by Dr Pryce and Mr Ross this morning have given, in some measure, the size of the problem facing all of those concerned with sources of information in the years of negotiation with the European Economic Community and afterwards. Bearing in mind the wealth of published material already appearing, this conference may well provide a fitting opportunity to pause and clear our thoughts before initiating any further information publications in this field. The major problem of the vast quantity of Common Market literature appearing in a language other than English is in itself one deserving early attention. At a lecture earlier this year about the European Iron and Steel Community, warning was given of the misinterpretation liable to follow from the simple use of the phrase ‘The Common Market’. It is probable, however, that the looseness of the term in this context can be accepted with comparative safety when compared with the apparent dangers of quoting from the English version of the Treaty of Rome, to which one of this morning's speakers referred.

Abstract

Dr Hugh Thurston, Head of European Department, Binder, Hamlyn, and Fry & Co. Limited, welcomed delegates on behalf of Aslib and said that this was a conference with a difference: it was a conference of specialists for specialists—for information officers whose job was the collection and dissemination of information.

Abstract

Who will lead Ambridge in the years to come? Theories rooted in psychology and political science, when applied to family dynamics in The Archers, allow for some educated guesses. Social learning theory suggests that children who see their parents vote, run for office and participate in other civic activities are more likely to do the same in adulthood. Emma Grundy did just that when she followed in the footsteps of her father, Neil Carter, in winning a seat on the parish council. Previous research has found that birth order also can shape future leaders, with the eldest child more likely to benefit developmentally from parents' undivided attention in the early years, and also more likely to establish a hierarchy of power over younger siblings. With these factors in mind, who are the most probable contenders to lead Ambridge in the spheres of politics, business and civic affairs? The extant research points to Pip Archer, Lily Pargetter, Phoebe Aldridge and George Grundy. The unique circumstances of Ruairi Donovan's childhood suggest he may also be a formidable candidate. And, as is the case in so many contexts, one would be wise not to overlook Molly Button.

Abstract

IT is not a bad idea for every librarian—when time can be found for such relaxations—to undertake a mental and professional stock‐taking. Once every few years is sufficient; indeed, it is inadvisable to indulge too frequently in such introspective searchings, as it is easy to engender pessimism instead of the needful healthy discontent. What is the position of librarianship to‐day, in general and in particular, as compared with the position a few years ago? What advancement really has been made? What work really has been done? What effect have my own efforts had upon the work in general? These are the questions that every earnest library worker is bound to ask himself at times if he is not to develop into an optimistic or pessimistic nuisance. They are necessary to the preservation of a just mental balance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore associations between different mentor behavioral profiles and mentees’ perceptions of the quality of mentoring relationship, the usefulness of the mentoring, and their college adjustment during the first year of college.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a quasi-experimental design and involved the participation of 253 student mentees and 246 students from a control group. Cluster analysis on the responses of mentees on the mentor behavior scale was used to identify behavioral profiles of academic mentors.

Findings

Four distinct behavioral profiles were identified: optimal (high scores on mentor structure, involvement, autonomy support, and competence support); sufficient (moderate on all scales); controlling (low on autonomy support but high on other scales); and inadequate (low on all scales). Compared to mentees exposed to sufficient and inadequate profiles, mentees exposed to the optimal profile perceived the mentoring relationship and its usefulness as more positive. Furthermore, they reported better social adjustment in college compared to a control group, whereas mentees exposed to the inadequate profile reported poorer adjustment. Interestingly, mentees exposed to the controlling profile found the mentoring relationship useful.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides new empirical bases for the behavioral profiles of mentors that best meet mentees’ academic adjustment challenges. Limitations of the study include the absence of the mentors’ perceptions in the creation of behavioral profiles and the fact that the profiles were analyzed based on a single program.

Originality/value

Behavioral profiles of academic mentors were examined through the lens of a strong theoretical model that emphasizes the important role of structure, involvement, autonomy support, and competence support in the academic adjustment of mentees.

Abstract

I SYMPATHISE with the decision to invite commercial advertising into Scoclis news, the thrice‐yearly sheet issued by the Standing Conference of Co‐operative Library & Information Services, but even though the rate is modest, I should think they will have to ‘professionalise’ the present stencilled format if they are to get much custom. You have got to make an advertiser feel he is getting value for money, not just providing a sub. Perhaps if Scoclis news doesn't have much success in ‘inviting’ advertising, it will try selling advertising instead. Some bodies, not necessarily SCOCLIS, which solicit commercial funding for their activities don't always seem clear just who is doing whom the favour.

Abstract

In a recent reference to changes brought about by the local government reorganisation of 1974, we criticised some of the names given to the new areas. Some of these name changes have made difficulties for those who follow from afar the doings of local authorities, as well as raising the ire of local people. Local names, however, are not the only casualty. The creation of new and larger governmental organisations rarely, if ever, results in economy and as anticipated, it was not long before the new local authorities were being directed to embrace financial stringency and all that it incurs. One such other casualty has been the loss of so many of the annual reports of local authority departments, very few now arriving at BFJ offices. In every case, the reason has been the same—severe restrictions on spending. Not that this was not necessary in many fields, but in respect of annual reports, we are convinced it was false economy. For so many of the reports, it was our pleasure to review them in the pages of BFJ. A prominent Labour politician was once heard to refer to them as “hard and dry reports for hard and dry officials”. It all depends probably on what you are looking for in them. Statistics there must be but most enforcement officers and public analysts, endeavour to keep these to the minimum, the general impression being that these are “dry”. If you are looking for trends, for comparison of the year under review with preceding years and then for comparing the results reported in one part of the country with another, where the population, eating habits, consumer reactions may be different, the tables of statistics are highly important.

Abstract

WE tell our students to concentrate on policy rather than practice, and this I propose to do here. But I am sure that librarians are interested in the way in which our policy is implemented, so there will be some account of our selection procedures. Some questions of principle will be examined as they arise from the facts given; others will be left to later sections of this paper.
