Abstract

Liner connectivity plays an important role as a determinant in how a country is able to gain access to world markets. Liner shipping as the medium of seaborne transport for import and export of manufactured and semi-manufactured goods plays a significant part in international trade, which in turn potentially contribute towards the prosperity of a country and its surrounding region. Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (LSCI) is one of the most common benchmark to see how well connected a country in global trade, where it consists of five components, namely the number of ships, carrying capacity, ship size, services provided, and the number of companies that deploy container ships calling a country’s ports. This paper aims to tally from the most to the least which LSCI component contributes in improving the shipping connectivity with the most impact, in six Maritime South-East Asian countries, i.e., Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. By descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and panel data, this paper finds that the country port’s capacity to accept larger ship size provides the most significant impact towards the improvement of the connectivity in the region. To attract companies to deploy largest ship, the improvement needs to be complemented with the capacity that can meet the expected volume, offering a variety of service, and good turnaround speed at the country’s port. The paper is expected to present not only indicative recommendations on which logistics connectivity initiative needs to be invested first, but also necessary proposals to develop a programme for building the region’s overall logistics industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a deeper understanding about the reasons behind difference in previous studies’ results in the field of audit quality determinants.

Design/methodology/approach

A meta-analysis method is employed in which 52 studies including 40 international studies from authentic scientific articles during the year 2000–2015 and 12 national studies out of authentic national scientific articles from 2001 to 2015 are taken to account as sample studies. Audit firm size, auditor tenure and auditor specialization are set as independent variables and audit quality is the only dependent variable in the current paper.

Findings

The results indicate that audit firm size and auditor specialization are positively associated with audit quality. In other words, contracting with larger audit firm and specialized auditor results in delivering higher quality audit services.

Originality/value

The current study is the first study to be conducted in the field of audit quality determinants. The results may be beneficial both for standard setters as well practitioners in a way that it provides evidence that contributes to basis policy and audit-standard makers about domination and determinants of audit quality.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the knowledge management (KM) model of Nonaka and Takeuchi, focusing on institutional and infrastructure factors in a specific field of design offices in a product-oriented organization. In other words, this research does not intend to recreate the model of Nonaka and Takeuchi, but seeks to expand and modify this model according to the specific context and institutional and infrastructure factors that may specifically affect the effectiveness of the model.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used two distinct questionnaires, administered to the same set of respondents, to comprehensively address different dimensions of KM. The first questionnaire, focused on KM components, assessed aspects such as knowledge creation, sharing and utilization. The second questionnaire evaluated institutional and infrastructural factors critical to KM, covering dimensions like organizational culture, values, leadership, context, hardware, software and network systems. This dual-questionnaire approach is justified, as it allows for a detailed and differentiated analysis: one tool captures the operational aspects of KM, while the other explores the supporting infrastructure. This methodology ensures that the study accurately measures both the effectiveness of KM practices and the adequacy of the supporting environment, thus providing a robust assessment of the KM system.

Findings

This study identifies seven key factors influencing KM processes: organizational culture, values, leadership, context, hardware, software and network systems. These factors shape how knowledge is created, shared and used, and support proposed modifications to the Nonaka and Takeuchi KM model. Using the TOPSIS method, this study found that organizational context, culture and values rank above average, while KM policies are moderate, and information technology is below average in the design offices of a product-oriented organization in Tehran. Further research in different sectors could help validate these findings.

Originality/value

This study introduces a novel enhancement to the Nonaka and Takeuchi KM model by incorporating a comprehensive analysis of institutional and infrastructural factors. Unlike existing models, which primarily focus on generalized KM principles, this research uniquely integrates specific factors such as organizational culture, leadership and technological infrastructure. The originality of this work lies in its tailored approach for product-oriented organizations, offering a more precise and actionable framework for improving KM practices. This advancement not only deepens theoretical insights but also provides practical value by addressing the specific needs and dynamics of the target organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a specific model and method for analyzing the knowledge domains and organization knowledge map. One of the functions of the organizational knowledge map is the possibility of extracting the risk of the organization's knowledge domains and thus the ability to define knowledge-based strategies in the organization. So far, various software tools have been designed to support the process of creating, analyzing knowledge domains and structure knowledge map. However, software companies have less detail and methodology of their software analysis and less research has been addressed.

Design/methodology/approach

This model calculates the risk of knowledge domains using the recursive algorithm approach, assuming there is one-way communication between the knowledge domains and using specific factors.

Findings

The prominence of this model is to calculate knowledge domains risk, dynamic updating of knowledge domains risk after any changes in knowledge domain risk in the organization's knowledge map. The model can also be used as a simulation model and prioritize corrective actions.

Originality/value

This is a recursive model that by assuming one-way relations among knowledge domain computes the risk of each domain knowledge by considering the risk of its related domains, relations among different domains and pre-requisites and post-requisites. This model has no limitation in determining the number of knots and communications. Despite of simplicity, it is too efficient and any organization can localize it based on its own needs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze and predict a user’s behavior and create recommender systems in libraries and information centers, using data mining techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study is an analytical survey study of cross-sectional type. The required data for this study were collected from the transactions of the users of libraries and information centers in Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. Using data mining techniques, the existing patterns were investigated, and users’ loan transactions were analyzed.

Findings

The findings showed that the association rules with the degree of confidence above 0.50 were able to determine user access patterns. Furthermore, among the decision tree algorithms, the C.05 predicted the loan period, referrals and users’ delay with the highest accuracy (i.e. 90.1). The other findings on feedforward neural network with R = 0.99 showed that the predicted results of neural network computation were very close to the real situation and had a proper estimation of user’s delay prediction. Finally, the clustering technique with the k-means algorithm predicted users’ behavior model regarding their loyalty.

Practical implications

The results of this study can lead to providing effective services and improve the quality of interaction between librarians and users and provide a good opportunity for managers to align supply of information resources with the real needs of users.

Originality/value

The results of the study showed that various data mining techniques are applicable with high efficiency and accuracy in analyzing library and information centers data and can be used to predict a user’s behavior and create recommendation systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify knowledge risk components. The present research also tends to determine the relationship between knowledge risk components, the importance of each component and the final ranking of components.

Design/methodology/approach

This is applied research regarding type, as well as being a descriptive, analytical study regarding performance; it is done according to the opinion of experts. Library studies are applied to extract knowledge risk components. After extracting components, components were screened using the interview technique. In addition, network analytical process method has been used for considering the interrelationship of components and determining their values.

Findings

After making the required analysis and studies, a total of 17 knowledge risk components were identified in four clusters. The four clusters include knowledge cluster, knowledge map cluster, organization cluster and expert cluster. It is to be noted that the extracted components are prioritized in each cluster. In the regarded case study, different parts of the organization have been evaluated in terms of exposure to knowledge risk.

Originality/value

Identifying the knowledge risk components enables the organization for moving toward the implementation of the knowledge management system and informing the organization in connection with risk aversion. In fact, such components provide the chance for the organization to identify risks inherent in each department of any organization and develop the necessary measures to reduce the risk in risky areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the key factors that explain intention to use e-wallet services (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude, subjective norm, positive disconfirmation and perceived behavioral control). The moderating role of perceived value in the relationship between satisfaction and their intention to continue using the e-wallet is also examined.

Methodology

A total of 257 e-wallet users participated in an online survey and hypotheses were tested with SPSS/PLS-SEM.

Findings

The constructs technology acceptance model (TAM), theory of planned behavior (TPB) and user satisfaction affect intention to use. However, perceived value does not strengthen the relationship between user satisfaction and e-wallet usage intention.

Practical implications

The TAM, TPB and expectancy disconfirmation model (EDM) constructs help explain the use of e-wallet services. These results will help the providers of these services to understand user behavior and to design their marketing strategies more appropriately to ensure consumer satisfaction and their intention to use e-wallet services.

Originality

This study adopts a holistic and integrative approach to explain the continued use of e-wallet services. The model integrates three basic adoption theories: TAM, TPB and EDM.

El propósito es investigar los factores clave que explican la intención de utilizar los servicios de monedero electrónico (utilidad percibida, facilidad de uso percibida, actitud, norma subjetiva y control conductual percibido). También se examina el papel moderador del valor percibido en la relación entre la satisfacción y su intención de seguir usando el monedero electrónico.

Metodología

257 usuarios de monederos electrónicos participaron en una encuesta online y las hipótesis fueron contrastadas con SPSS/PLS-SEM.

Hallazgos

los constructos TAM (modelo de aceptación de la tecnología), TPB (teoría del comportamiento planificado) y la satisfacción del usuario afectan a la intención de uso. Sin embargo, el valor percibido no refuerza la relación entre la satisfacción del usuario y la intención de uso del monedero electrónico.

Originalidad

Este estudio adopta un enfoque holístico e integrador para explicar el uso continuado de los servicios de monedero electrónico. El modelo integra tres teorías básicas de adopción: TAM, TPB y EDM (modelo de desconfirmación de expectativas).

Implicaciones prácticas

los constructos TAM, TPB y EDM permiten explicar el uso de los servicios de monedero electrónico. Estos resultados ayudarán a los proveedores de estos servicios a comprender el comportamiento de los usuarios y diseñar sus estrategias de marketing de forma más adecuada para garantizar la satisfacción del consumidor y su intención de utilizar los servicios de monedero electrónico.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effect of interaction between market competition and management accounting system (MAS) characteristics on managerial performance. Scope of the study is concentrated on Iranian financial organizations and managers of these organizations were identified as respondents for the questionnaire survey.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used the SmartPLS to analyze the data, and the model of the study was estimated with structural equation modeling (SEM). It follows the recommended two-stage analytical procedures of SEM: assessing confirmatory measurement models (factor analysis) and confirmatory structural models (path analysis).

Findings

The study uncovered the existence of direct relationships between competition and MAS, and between MAS and managerial performance. The study also confirmed that the relationship between competition and managerial performance is mediated by MAS.

Research limitations/implications

The findings provide valuable insights to guide managers in financial organizations to improve their performance through suitable MAS by considering internal and environmental factors. Recommendations on how to improve MAS and managerial performance are provided accordingly.

Originality/value

Prior researches confirm that there is no unique and universal MAS for all organizations, as this depends on internal firm characteristics and environmental features. However, there has been a lack of empirical evidence on MAS researches in the service organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

Word of mouth (WOM) is becoming recognized as an important form of promotion and an important source of information influencing consumer's attitudes and purchase behavior. WOM is especially important in the tourism industry, whose intangible products are difficult to evaluate prior to their consumption. The purpose of this paper is to survey the effect of WOM on tourists' decision for travelling to an Islamic destination.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through a field research among 224 inbound tourists who have visited Isfahan as an Islamic destination, and the data were analyzed using regression and correlation. Additionally, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applicable for the inference relationships between tourist characteristics and using WOM. The survey period was from June 2 to June 29, 2010.

Findings

Two findings have been concluded in this survey. First, WOM affects the decision of tourists for travelling to Isfahan. Second, nationality, gender, purpose of trip, and previous experience of travelling were associated with using WOM among prospective tourists.

Practical implications

Managers should develop complete understanding of WOM and try to stimulate WOM about destinations among tourists, because most tourists are influenced by information from informal sources.

Originality/value

The paper shows that customer‐oriented tourism programs improve the numbers of inbound tourists to a particular destination.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to produce non‐fermented symbiotic milk with natural taste and to evaluate the effect of prebiotics including inulin, lactolose and galacto‐oligosaccharides (respectively in 0.6, 0.4 and 1.6% w/w) on probiotics count of Lactobacillus acidophilus (La‐5) and Bifidobacterium bifidus (lactis) (Bb‐12) in cooled pasteurized milk.

Design/methodology/approach

The probiotic cultures (count: 109 CFU/mL, dosage: 0.01% w/v) and prebiotics were added to 2.5% fat milk in Pegah pasteurized milk factory. The chemical properties of milk and the survival of La5 and Bb12 were studied at 4°C during ten days.

Findings

Results of sensory evaluation tests showed that none of the symbiotic samples were acceptable after ten days. So the minimum acceptance time of the samples was seven days except for the lactolose one. When compared to the control sample, at day 0, the viable counts for both L. acidophilus La‐5 and B. bifidus(lactis) Bb‐12 significantly increased in the symbiotic milk by addition of lactolose (P<0.05) due to possible probiotic effects of this source.

Originality/value

No research had been done to produce non‐fermented symbiotic milk in Iran. The minimum shelf life of the product was one week.
