Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore how virtual world communities employ new media as a repository to record information about their past.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the notions of documentary practice and memory-making as a framework, a case study of MMORPG City of Heroes’ (CoH) virtual community on Reddit discussion board “/r/cityofheroes” was conducted. The study consists of an interpretative analysis of posts, comments, images, and other materials submitted to /r/cityofheroes during a period of approximately seven months.

Findings

The principal finding of the study is that the CoH community, with varying levels of intentionality, documented a range of pasts on /r/cityofheroes, relating to CoH as a game world, a site of personal experience, a product, a nexus of narratives, and a game. The analysis also lays bare the community’s memory-making processes, in which the documented conceptions of CoH’s past were put to work in the present, informing community action and viewpoints.

Originality/value

Games and gaming practices are increasingly prevalent in leisure and professional settings. This trend, which makes virtual environments and online media proxies for or augmentations of “real life”, makes it necessary for information scholars to understand how the full range of human information behaviours, including documenting, and memory-making, emerge or are replicated online. Additionally, few studies have examined the interplay between new media affordances, documentary practices, and memory-making in the context of virtual world communities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the sociocultural underpinnings of wiki-based knowledge production in the videogame domain, and to elucidate how these underpinnings relate to the formation of wikis as resources of videogame documentation.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on a three-month ethnographic investigation of knowledge practices on the Dark Souls Wiki (DSW). In focus of the analysis were the boundaries and knowledge aims of the DSW, together with how its contributors organized inquiries and used various sources, methods of investigation, and ways of warranting knowledge claims.

Findings

The principal result of the paper is an empirical account of how the DSW functions as a culture of knowledge production, and how the content and structure of the wiki connects to the knowledge practices of its contributors. Four major factors that influenced knowledge practices on the wiki were identified: the structures and practices established by the community’s earlier wiki efforts; principles and priorities that informed wiki knowledge practices; the characteristics of the videogame in focus of the site’s knowledge-building work; the extent and types of relevant documentation provided by videogame industry, the videogaming press included.

Originality/value

Previous research has shown interest in investigating the mechanisms by which community-created knowledge and online resources of documentation emerge, and how these are utilized in play. There is, however, little research seeking to elucidate the sociocultural structures and practices that determine and sustain collaborative online videogame knowledge production.

Abstract

The availability of a wetting balance which can be easily interfaced to a microcomputer has made possible a practical receiving inspection solderability test for component leads that avoids the subjectivity of the present dip‐and‐look test. The wetting balance, in effect, detects the size and shape of the solder meniscus on the lead. Since it is the solder meniscus more than the degree of coverage that is evaluated by inspectors of the completed solder joint, the wetting balance provides a more realistic test of how well the components will perform on the PWA. The software that has been developed for the wetting balance is designed to make it easy for inspection workers to perform the test with a minimum of training. It asks for identification of the part, manufacturer, date code, purchase order number, etc., so that the final results are adequately documented. Use of a computer to present the results means that the wetting force as a function of time can be plotted as a normalised curve (automatically accounting for differences in number and size of leads), and also that the results can be accumulated in a factory computer for statistical quality control. For a given lot of components, there is usually little spread in the observed results. This indicates that a sample size as small as three is sufficient to characterise the lot. With further data accumulation, it should be possible to devise a skip‐lot sampling plan for those manufacturers showing consistently good solderability. Also, the accumulated results of lots from problem manufacturers, coupled with microscopic studies of the causes of poor solderability, can be used as a basis for negotiations. The results are reproducible from one plant to another because they do not require visual interpretation. Judicious application of this method of solderability testing by a component user should allow removal of problem lots (for return or solderability enhancement), and therefore lead to a virtual elimination of solderability‐related defects observed after PWA soldering. Widespread application by component manufacturers (after burn‐in) should lead to a virtual elimination of cases of shipping unsolderable components.

Abstract

Purpose

Coral aggregate seawater concrete (CASC) is a new type of lightweight aggregate concrete that is becoming widely used in reef engineering. To investigate the corrosion behavior of different kinds of rebar in CASC exposed to simulated seawater for 0-270 d, the electrochemical techniques, including linear polarization resistance (LPR) technique and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were used in the present work.

Design/methodology/approach

The electrochemical techniques, including LPR technique and the EIS, were used in the present work.

Findings

Based on the time-varying law of linear polarization curves, self-corrosion potential (Ecorr), polarization resistance (Rp), corrosion current density (Icorr), corrosion rate (i), and the characteristics of EIS diagrams for different types of rebar in CASC, it can be found that the anti-corrosion property of them can be ranked as epoxy resin coated steel > 2205 duplex stainless steel (2205S) > 316 L stainless steel (316 L) > organic coated steel > ordinary steel. Additionally, the linear regression equation between Rp and charge transfer resistance (Rct) was established. Finally, the EIS corrosion standard of rebar was established from the LPR corrosion standard, which provides a direct standard for the EIS technique to determine the condition of rebar in CASC.

Originality/value

The linear regression equation between polarization resistance and charge transfer resistance was established. And the EIS corrosion standard of rebar was established from the LPR corrosion standard, which provides a direct standard for the EIS technique to determine the condition of rebar in CASC.

Abstract

Purpose

The knowledge over the performance of cutting fluids when applied under different machining conditions (such as distinct work material and cutting parameters) is critical in order to improve the efficiency of most machining operations. This paper is concerned with the performance of cutting fluids employed under two distinct machining operations involving aluminium alloys: drilling of AA 1050‐O aluminium applying cutting fluid as a mist and turning of AA 6262‐T6 aluminium alloy using cutting fluids (as a flood) with distinct extreme pressure additives (chlorine, sulphur and phosphor).

Design/methodology/approach

This work reports on a experimental study of the performance of cutting fluids when machining aluminium alloys.

Findings

The results indicated an increase in the flow rate of the mist led to lower feed forces but higher torque, power consumption and specific cutting pressure in the drilling operation (AA 1050‐O aluminium). The surface finish was not drastically affected by the cutting fluid flow rate. When turning AA 6162‐T6 aluminium alloy, in general, best results were observed using 10 per cent fluid concentration applied at the tool‐workpiece interface. The cutting fluid containing chlorine as extreme pressure additive produced lower cutting forces and better surface finish at high cutting speed and low feed rate and depth of cut.

Originality/value

The novel element of this paper is the use of minimal lubrication (drilling) and cutting fluids with distinct extreme pressure (turning).

Abstract

Recent developments in synthetic resin based non‐corrosive fluxes for soft soldering have coincided with completion of the work of the international flux standard committee. With the increasing usage of surface mounted components these special synthetic resin‐based, zero‐halide, low solids fluxes can be used to leave minimal residues after soldering, which without removal do not affect long‐term reliability of soldered assemblies. Similar chemistry has been applied to devise flux cored solders and solder pastes which also leave minimal, safe residues, thereby avoiding cleaning processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways in which information acts as a commodity in massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), and how players pay for items and services with information practices.

Design/methodology/approach

Through meta-theoretical analysis of the game environment as a set of information systems, one of retrieval and one social, the paper shows how players’ information practices influence their access to game content, organizational status and relationship to real-money trade.

Findings

By showing how information trading functions in MMORPGs, the paper displays the importance of information access for play, the efficiency of real money trade and the significance of information practice -based services as a relatively regular form of payment in virtual worlds. Players furthermore shown to contribute to the information economy of the game with the way in which they decide not to share some information, so as to prevent others from a loss of game content value due to spoilers.

Originality/value

The subject, despite the popularity of online games, has been severely understudied within library and information science. The paper contributes to that line of research, by showing how games function as information systems, and by explaining how they, as environments and contexts, influence and are influenced by information practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to expand the research of games as information systems. It illustrates how significant parts of massively multiplayer online role-playing function like information retrieval from a library database system.

Design/methodology/approach

By combining ideas from earlier contributions on the topics of game environments as information systems, the paper explores how gameplay connects to information retrieval, restricted content access, and information system structure. The paper then proceeds to examine this idea through an ethnographic study conducted in World of Warcraft during 2012-2016.

Findings

By discussing how multiplayer digital game play is a form of information retrieval, the paper shows that players enjoy the well-restricted access to information that is a constitutive element of gameplay. Examining controlled access, procedural literacies and emphatic keywords, the paper finds that content relevances and system use may be influenced by hedonic concerns rather than task efficiency.

Originality/value

The study of retrieval issues related to gaming enriches our knowledge on inferences in retrieval. It shows that people may prefer that their access to information be limited, in order to make system use more interesting.

Abstract

Synthetic and semi‐synthetic fluids are known to be less sensitive to bacterial growth than soluble oils. However they often offer poor lubricating properties, especially in the extreme pressure (EP) regime. In this paper, we introduce an innovative sulfur based additive demonstrating outstanding EP performances despite being completely water soluble. In combination with oiliness and anti‐wear agents, such as phosphate esters or alkyl thio acids, it exhibits a wide range of lubricating properties which are requested for multifunctional lubricants. Finally, we show that synthetic and semi‐synthetic fluids containing this type of additive can be considered for severe metalworking operations.
