Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this article is to investigate a shock model for a cold standby repairable deteriorating system with non-negligible phase type quasi-renewal process maintenance times and threshold with spare.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to assess the significance of a property of phase type quasi-renewal processes, it is easy to evaluate the theory concept of a cold standby repairable deteriorating system subject to random shocks and stochastic lead time via phase type quasi-renewal processes.

Findings

The current research work obtained an optimal replacement policy N* analytically and numerically for a cold standby repairable deteriorating system with spare using a phase type quasi-renewal process.

Originality/value

The study of a random threshold shock model for a cold standby repairable deteriorating system with spare via-phase type quasi-renewal processes has not been reported anywhere in the literature. In addition, in such a context, an optimal replacement policy N* has not been obtained analytically. The current research paper is to bridge the gap in the literature. The numerical example presented indicates that a maintenance policy suggested in this article aids in generating a significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

Technological advancements and growing complexity of many real-time systems, namely, communication, transportation, defense systems, etc., necessitate the importance to adopt a well-planned repair process such as phase type quasi-renewal process contributing to an improved system performance. Further, in an attempt to boost the role of maintenance as a financial benefactor, repairman’s multiple vacation policy is incorporated. Also, the significance of the degree of repair is illustrated while indicating the suitability of the matrix-analytic approach via the phase type quasi-renewal operating/repair times in reliability. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The optimal replacement policy is obtained by employing the matrix-analytic method and minimum average cost rate.

Findings

The considered models make a significant contribution towards establishing that the matrix-analytic method, using the phase type quasi-renewal process, aids in reducing the computations and also fills the gap in the literature in the study of deteriorating systems. Availability and rate of occurrence of failures are evaluated in transient and steady-state regime.

Originality/value

This model differs from the existing models, in that, a repairman’s multiple vacation, delayed repair time and representation of the failure occurrence by a mixed Poisson process have been incorporated into the analysis. Also, time-dependent case and N-policy have been adopted to explore the optimality issues using phase type quasi-renewal process analytically. The numerical illustrations warrant that the maintenance policy proposed in this paper produces a considerably lower cost.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the focus was shifted from repairing durable goods to achieving healthier ecology, making durable goods more secure in turn. This study introduced preventive maintenance behavior to trace the ex-post control of “curling” back to the ex-post control of “self-healing.” This study tries to close the gap between the human repair of machines and their “self-curing.” Finally, the author makes the machines healthier.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper constructed a mathematical model of preventive maintenance behavior during a specific period for durable consumer goods. The author builds a simulation function of the two-stage preventative maintenance behavior relations. The study used simulations to analyze the influencing relationship and differences between three preventive maintenance behavior elements to basic warranty preventive maintenance (BWPM) behavior and extended warranty preventive maintenance (EWPM) behavior.

Findings

Both BWPM behavior and EWPM behavior were affected by the preventive maintenance (PM) behavioral components in different ways. The influence paths of the two warranty periods affected by PM behavior were also different.

Research limitations/implications

This study introduced PM behavior to trace the ex-post control of “curling” back to the ex-post control of “self-healing.” This study adopted the human–machine interaction mode to improve durable goods' self-healing ability during operation and enable a more effective and sustainable development.

Practical implications

This study’s conclusions may help manufacturers guide PM behavior in a way that achieves “self-healing” of the durable goods.

Originality/value

The author opened a “black box” of PM behaviors and analyzed their components. The internal structure relation of PM behavior is built and the closed-loop system of spatial structure is formed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a method to formalize information security control descriptions and a decision support system increasing the automation level and, therefore, the cost efficiency of the information security compliance checking process. The authors advanced the state-of-the-art by developing and applying the method to ISO 27002 information security controls and by developing a semantic decision support system.

Design/methodology/approach

The research has been conducted under design science principles. The formalized information security controls were used in a compliance/risk management decision support system which has been evaluated with experts and end-users in real-world environments.

Findings

There are different ways of obtaining compliance to information security standards. For example, by implementing countermeasures of different quality depending on the protection needs of the organization. The authors developed decision support mechanisms which use the formal control descriptions as input to support the decision-maker at identifying the most appropriate countermeasure strategy based on cost and risk reduction potential.

Originality/value

Formalizing and mapping the ISO 27002 controls to the security ontology enabled the authors to automatically determine the compliance status and organization-wide risk-level based on the formal control descriptions and the modelled environment, including organizational structures, IT infrastructure, available countermeasures, etc. Furthermore, it allowed them to automatically determine which countermeasures are missing to ensure compliance and to decrease the risk to an acceptable level.
