Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the structural, electrical and microwave properties of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 (0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.0) thick-film ceramics.

Design/methodology/approach

The thick films of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 (0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.0) on the alumina substrate have been delineated using screen printing technique. The structural analysis was carried out using an X-ray diffraction method and scanning electron microscopy. The direct current (DC) electrical resistivity is measured using a two-probe method. Microwave absorption was studied in the 8-18 GHz frequency range by using the Waveguide Reflectometer Method. The permittivity and permeability in the 8-18 GHz frequency range were measured by using Voltage Standing Wave Ratio slotted section method.

Findings

The thick films have orthorhombic perovskite structure with dominant (020) plane. By using first-principle calculation method, theoretical and experimental lattice parameter and cell volume of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 are matched with each other. The cobalt content changes the morphology from plates to needles. The DC electrical resistivity increases with increase in Co content and decreases with increase in temperature. (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 thick film shows 75 per cent microwave absorption both in the X band and Ku band. The microwave permittivity and permeability decreases with increase in frequency and Co content.

Originality/value

Structural, electrical and microwave properties of (Sr0.6Ca0.4) (CoyMn1−y) O3 (0.2 ≤ y ≤ 1.0). Thick film ceramics on alumina substrate is reported for the first time.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to apply complexity theory tenets to deepen understanding, explanation and prediction of how configurations of national cultures and need motivations influence national entrepreneurial and innovation behavior and nations’ quality-of-life (QOL). Also, the study examines whether or not high national ethical behavior is sufficient for indicating nations high in quality-of-life.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying core tenets of complexity theory, the study constructs asymmetric, case-based (nations), explanations and predictive models of cultures’ consequences (via Schwartz’s seven value dimensions) and implicit need motivations (via McClelland’s three need motivations) indicating national entrepreneur and innovation activities and subsequent national quality-of-life and ethical behavior. The study includes testing configurational models empirically for predictive accuracy. The empirical examination is for a set of data for 24 nations in Asia, Europe, North and South America and the South Pacific.

Findings

The findings confirm the usefulness of applying complexity theory to learn how culture and motivation configurations support versus have negative consequences on nations’ entrepreneurship, innovation and human well-being. Nurturing of entrepreneur activities supports the nurturing of enterprise innovation activity and their joint occurrence indicates nations achieving high quality-of-life. The findings advance the perspective that different sets of cultural value configurations indicate nations high versus low in entrepreneur and innovation activities.

Practical implications

High entrepreneur activities without high innovation activity are insufficient for achieving high national quality-of-life. Achieving high ethical behavior supports high quality-of-life.

Originality/value

This study is one of the first to apply complexity theory tenets in the field of entrepreneurship research. The study here advances the perspective that case-based asymmetric modeling of recipes is necessary to explain and predict entrepreneur activities and outcomes rather than examining whether variable relationships are statistically significant from zero.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop a comprehensive framework that conceptualizes and measures the antecedents of the sales executive’s performance with regard to workplace spirituality and employee’s commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

This research applied a cross-sectional survey design to test the proposed hypotheses. Data were collected from 160 sales executives who are studying MBA and EMBA respectively and are working in various services and manufacturing organizations from Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Findings

The results suggest, when sales executives experience workplace spirituality; they feel more committed to their respective organizations and influences activities relating to sales performance.

Research limitations/implications

The study collected data for the constructs from the same source, simultaneously. This can produce the risk of common method variance, leading to an inflation of statistical relationships. A longitudinal research design may also be suitable.

Practical implications

By improving spirituality climates in the workplace, managers can enhance employee’s commitment, and thus, individual sales officers may boost up their sales performance. It is likely that occurs because sales executives react reciprocally toward their respective company that satisfies their spiritual needs.

Originality/value

The paper contributes by filling the gaps in literature related to sales management, where empirical studies on workplace spirituality have been scarce till date. This study is the first of a kind to include workplace spirituality, commitment and executive’s sales performance simultaneously in the context of Bangladesh.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assist a manufacturer for determining the principal supplier development impediments (SDIs) that are affecting the supplier development programs (SDPs) and yield a basis for drawing the appropriate mitigation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed approach starts with the application of fuzzy analytic hierarchy process and Pareto analysis to obtain the principal SDIs. Subsequently, the interpretive structural modeling and Fuzzy-Matrice d’Impacts Croisés-Multiplication Appliquée à un Classement analysis are applied on the principal SDIs to explore the root causes inducing ineffectiveness in the SDPs.

Findings

The outcomes of the proposed approach were demonstrated through a case study conducted in an Indian automotive components manufacturing company. The principal SDIs were identified, ranked, classified and structurally related for the said case company’s manufacturing environment. It was found that the lack of competent workforce, level of nascent relationship between manufacturer and suppliers and poor devolution of authority were the main SDIs that the case company has to primarily focus to make its SDPs effective.

Research limitations/implications

Although the study was conducted in a practical case situation, the obtained results are not indiscriminate to the other case situations. However, the proposed approach can be applied for analyzing the SDIs in any manufacturing environment once the set of SDIs relevant to that environment are carefully chosen.

Practical implications

The methodology would assist a manufacturer to proactively identify the SDIs that it has to primarily focus and subsequently devise the mitigation strategies for smooth running of its SDPs.

Originality/value

By utilizing the identified SDIs and applying the proposed methodology a manufacturer can find the main SDIs that are making the SDPs ineffective and accordingly fix the hindrances through certain mitigation strategies designed.

Abstract

Steel, stainless steel, clad steel, and aluminium are used in the transport and handling of chlorosulphonic acid, which is used as a sulphonating agent in the manufacture of synthetic drugs and as a warfare chemical. The choice of the appropriate material of construction for tank wagons and handling equipment depends upon the rate of corrosion of these materials in chlorosulphonic acid. Experiments show that corrosion can vary widely depending upon the percentage of chlorosulphonic acid present.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of product complexity and communication quality on inter-organizational cost management (IOCM) and open book accounting (OBA) practices in buyer–supplier relationships in Malaysian manufacturing firms.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey was administrated to CFOs or accounting managers of Malaysian suppliers. Exploratory factor analysis and Structural Equation Modeling procedures were applied to test convergent and discriminant validity of the measurement model and examine the relationships among the latent constructs in the structural model.

Findings

The results suggest that IOCM and OBA scales show acceptable reliability and validity. The findings also report that both product complexity and communication quality have a positive effect on IOCM and OBA in buyer–supplier relationships. However, the results suggest that IOCM does not influence OBA practice.

Research limitations/implications

Although IOCM and OBA constructs exhibited satisfactory reliability and validity, future research is required to refine and further validate these constructs. The data were only collected from the supplier’s perspective. Thus, future research is invited to benefit from matched data from both suppliers and buyers to generate additional insights on IOCM and OBA.

Practical implications

This study may assist suppliers and buyers in relationships by suggesting that complex products require the adoption of IOCM and OBA practices to reduce information asymmetries and manage costs. Furthermore, emphasizing quality of communication may enhance the implementation of these practices.

Originality/value

Theoretically, this study contributes to the academic stream of management accounting and cost management as it enhances an understanding of contributions introduced in prior literature on IOCM and OBA. It uses a complementary approach of transaction cost theory (TCT) and social exchange theory (SET) to explain the research model. Methodologically, the study validated scales for measuring IOCM and OBA in a new environment.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the affect theory of social exchange, this study investigates the mediating role of students' affective commitment between their personality traits (extraversion and agreeableness) and academic performance.

Design/methodology/approach

This research employs mixed-method study, that is exploratory text analysis using 123 responses followed by a survey of 300 responses among the management students to test the proposed model.

Findings

Results reveal a direct positive association of extraversion and agreeableness with students' affective commitment towards their academic institution. Additionally, negative indirect effects of affective commitment were found between the two personality traits and academic performance.

Originality/value

The study highlights both positive and negative outcomes of so-called favorable personality types of extraversion and agreeableness, thereby, building a prima facie case for promoting personality diversity in management institutions.

Abstract

A boundary element method in terms of the field variables is applied to three‐dimensional electromagnetic scattering problems. Especially, the influence of a dipole excited field on low conducting materials situated very close to the antenna will be discussed. We use higher order edge elements of quadilateral shape for the field approximation on curved surfaces. The tangential components of the unknown field variables are interpolated by vector element functions. The Galerkin method is implemented to obtain a set of linear equations. The applicability of the proposed edge element is investigated by the comparison of different BEM‐formulations and FEM‐results.
