Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the homogeneous and heterogeneous reactions on Prandtl fluid flow at a stretching sheet with an induced magnetic field and slip boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing equations include the continuity, induced magnetic field, momentum, energy and homogeneous–heterogeneous equations. Initially, with suitable similarity variables, the governing partial differential equations and converted into a system of ordinary differential equations. Then, the nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved by a shooting technique with the help of the BVC5C Matlab package.

Findings

The results of the present investigation are presented through graphs for different values of the various parameters. The authors observed that the large values of the stretching ratio and the induced magnetic parameters are moderate magnetic field, velocity and temperature primarily. Also, the authors found the more velocity and temperatures by boosting the slip parameters.

Originality/value

In addition, the values of the skin friction and the rate of heat transfer for various values of physical parameters are tabulated and deliberated in detail.

Abstract

The present century is an age of knowledge-based economy. Higher education is in the process of transformation and thereby challenging the traditional system of education in India. The present paper reviews the current conditions of ICT use by the students in higher education in India. The major objectives of the study are (1) assessment of the use of computer and Internet by the students of higher education in India and (2) to find the determinants of use of ICT by the students in India. The study uses the NSSO 71st Round Unit Level Data on Social Consumption: Education Survey (71st Round, 2014). The present paper is based on 6,035 students from all the regions in India out of which 3,127 students were from the rural area and 2,908 from the urban area. The findings from logit analysis suggest that the determinants of ICT use by the students in higher education in India are regional disparities, gender, education levels of households, type of courses pursued by the students, type of institutions, access to computer and Internet facility, consumption levels of households, and students' residence type.

Abstract

Purpose

The present work explores the influence of Hall and Ohmic heating effects on the convective peristaltic flow of a conducting Jeffrey nanofluid in an inclined porous asymmetric channel with slip. Also, the authors investigated the impact of viscous dissipation, thermal radiation, heat generation/absorption and cross diffusion effects on the flow. Peristaltic flow has many industrial and physiological applications and most of the biofluids show the non-Newtonian fluid behaviour. Further, in a living body, several biofluids flow through different kinds of systems that are not symmetric, horizontal or vertical. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors considered the flow of Jeffrey fluid which is generated by a sinusoidal wave propagating on the walls of an inclined asymmetric channel. The flow model is developed from the fixed frame to the wave frame. Finally, yield the nonlinear governing equations by applying the non-dimensional quantities with the assumptions of lengthy wave and negligible Reynolds number. The exact solution has been computed for the velocity and pressure gradient. The solutions for temperature and concentration are obtained by the regular perturbation technique.

Findings

Graphical analysis is made for the present results for different values of emerging parameters and explained clearly. It is noticed that the magnetic field enriches the temperature where it drops the fluid velocity. This work describes that the temperature field is decreasing due to the radiation but it is a rising function of temperature slip parameter. The temperature profile declines for growing values of the Hall parameter. The flow velocity diminishes for boosting values of the Darcy parameter. Further, the authors perceived that the concentration field reduces for large values of the chemical reaction parameter.

Originality/value

The authors validated and compared the results with the existing literature. This investigation will help to study some physiological systems, and heat transfer in peristaltic transport plays key role in medical treatments, so we ensure that these results are applicable in medical treatments like cancer therapy, drug delivery, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the melting heat transfer of magnetohydrodynamics Casson nanofluid flow with viscous dissipation, radiation, and complete slip effects on a porous stretching sheet. Since, the study of melting heat transfer has mesmerized the attention of scientists and engineers in the sense of its enormous uses in industrial processes, solidification, casting, and technology.

Design/methodology/approach

Bejan number and entropy are analyzed. Exploration of irreversibility is modeled using the thermodynamics second law. There is a discussion on thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion along with first-order chemical reactions. Adequate transformations are introduced to convert the controlling partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. The three-phase Lobatto solvers (bvp5c) are used to obtain numerical solutions of the transmitted equations.

Findings

The effects of various factors on temperature, velocity, concentration, Bejan number and entropy rate are shown graphically. The velocity field is enhanced by increasing the melting heat parameter, and it declines for growing magnetic parameters. Temperature is decreased for increasing parametric values of melting heat, porous and Casson parameters. A 7% decrease in the Sherwood distribution is seen when we increase the Brownian motion parameter from 0.1 to 0.2. Similarly, an 11% decrement is found in the Nusselt distribution for increasing the Brinkman number from 0.5 to 1.

Originality/value

Entropy and Bejan number experience dual tendencies whenever the melting heat parameter increases. Nusselt number and skin friction experience the opposite behavior for the increasing values of melting parameter. Sherwood number decreases for the increasing values of melting parameter. The velocity profile is directly related to the melting parameter and inversely related to porous and magnetic parameters. Thermophoresis and Brinkman parameters boost the temperature profile and it is controlled by melting and porous parameters. Some notable fields where the present study is used inevitably are silicon wafering, geothermal energy recovery and semiconductor manufacturing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adoption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by school administrators in the management of schools, as well as factors that influence use of ICTs by the administrators.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey research design was adopted. A two-stage sampling procedure (random and purposive) was used to select the respondents, while quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection.

Findings

Findings reveal that the school administrators use various ICTs to carry out administrative and management duties. Task characteristics, task-technology fit, attitude and perceived ease of use have significant relationships with use of ICTs by the administrators.

Research limitations/implications

The findings and conclusion from this paper cannot be generalised to all schools in Nigeria because the population was limited to only private secondary schools.

Practical implications

The study contributes to an existing knowledge on adoption and use of ICTs in schools, and provides information to policymakers on factors that should be given consideration when there is a need to implement ICTs in schools.

Social implications

This paper could assist school administrators that are yet to adopt and implement ICTs in their schools of the need to do so in order to enjoy the benefits associated with ICTs use in the workplace.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first pieces of empirical research that has adopted the integrated technology acceptance and task-technology fit models to investigate use of ICTs by administrators of schools in Nigeria.

Abstract

Purpose

Increased concern about the extensive use of information and communication technology (ICT) has led to widespread research on its effects on employees. This study aims to examine the effect of ICT use and demand on employee-related outcomes, particularly work-life balance, job satisfaction, personal burnout and intention to leave.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed model was tested using a survey questionnaire distributed among academics and administrative employees working in the higher education (HE) sector in Qatar. New statistical tools were adopted to analyze the study data (i.e. PLSpredict and partial least squares structural equation modeling for unobserved heterogeneity).

Findings

The results confirmed that ICT use affects ICT demand and ICT demand significantly influences employee-related outcomes.

Practical implications

The findings will help HE institutes to carefully examine the negative effect of ICT use and come up with practical ways to avoid such effects.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the rare papers that inspect the negative effect of ICT use in the HE sector. Furthermore, it is the only paper inspecting such relationship in Gulf region.

Abstract

Purpose

The Indian power sector is dominated by coal. Environmental awareness and advances in techno-economic front have led to a slow but steady shift towards greener alternatives. The distributions of both fossil fuel resources and renewable energy potential are not uniform across the states. Paper attempts to answer how the states are performing in the sector and how the renewable energy and conventional resources are affecting the dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employ a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) to rank the performance of Indian states in the power sector. Multi-stage analysis opens up the DEA black-box through disaggregating power sector in two logical sub-sectors. The performance is evaluated from the point-of-view of policy formulating and implementing agencies. Further, an econometric analysis using seemingly unrelated regression equations (SURE) is conducted to estimate the determinants of total and industrial per-capita electricity consumption.

Findings

Efficiency scores obtained from the first phase of analysis happens to be a significant explanatory variable for power consumption. The growth in electricity consumption, which is necessary for economic wellbeing, is positively affected by both renewable and non-renewable sources; but conventional sources have a larger impact on per-capita consumption. Yet, the share of renewables in the energy mix has positive elasticity. Hence, the findings are encouraging, because development in storage technologies, falling costs and policy interventions are poised to give further impetus to renewable sources.

Originality/value

The study is one of the very few where entire spectrum of the Indian power sector is evaluated from efficiency perspective. Further, the second phase analysis gives additional relevant insights on the sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the impact of applying a blockchain-based information system in the international students’ administrative workflow in the context of a public research university in the USA.

Design/methodology/approach

Specifically, a prototype of the blockchain-based information system was developed and tested. The system has the potential advantages of being more efficient, more transparent, faster and safer.

Findings

The results show that digital registration could increase student registration efficiency with a blockchain-based application.

Research limitations/implications

There are also some limitations of this study. As an early exploration of the use of blockchain technology in higher education, this study could be further extended in several aspects: different institutions (e.g. private vs public school) may have different operational strategies towards international student affairs. The different administrative processes should be discussed in the context of different institutions, and thus the proposed system should be tested and evaluated based on the requirements of different institutions. Use experience and feedback from different users such as university administrators and students should be considered and investigated with respect to the necessary improvement of the proposed system. The extensibility and scalability of the system should be assessed to accommodate any potential modifications of the administrative process.

Originality/value

The findings show that a blockchain-based information management system has the potential to improve data transmission efficiency and protect information privacy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, to identify and encapsulate the enablers that can facilitate technology integration in higher education and second, to understand and analyze the interplay between technology agility enablers.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used the Total Interpretive Structural Modeling (TISM) approach to construct a theoretical model of the technology agility enablers in higher education and MICMAC analysis for ranking and segregating the enablers based on their dependence power into four categories: Autonomous, Dependent, Linkage and Independent.

Findings

The study helped identify eight technology agility enablers, with the Covid-19 pandemic as the most significant enabler. The Covid-19 pandemic has catalyzed the diffusion of technology across the education sector in India, including tertiary higher education. The study revealed government initiatives and institutional commitment as other enablers that can promote technology agility in higher education.

Practical implications

The results of this study would assist the policymakers and management of universities and colleges in understanding the important enablers that can facilitate technology integration in higher education.

Originality/value

Research in the past on technology adoption in higher education has looked into each enabler in isolation. This research provides a comprehensive view of the enablers and has attempted to establish a multidirectional interplay between the enablers.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of the present study is to evaluate and analyse the performance of Indian electricity distribution utilities post the implementation of landmark Electricity Act 2003.

Design/methodology/approach

Stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) that incorporates exogenous influences on operational efficiency is adopted in the present study. Specifically, a stochastic frontier production function model with a technical inefficiency effects model (Battese and Coelli, 1995) is chosen as a preferred model. In this model, the function that explains the inefficiency scores is estimated in a single stage with the production technology. This avoids the problem of inconsistency which is possible in the two-stage approach.

Findings

The sample involved 52 Indian electricity distribution utilities for seven-year period from 2006 to 2013. Major findings of SFA show that Indian electricity distribution utilities post the implementation of Electricity Act (2003) had, on average, experienced efficiency improvement during the observed period. The overall mean technical effciency score is estimated as 78.5% which indicates that there exist wide scope for effciency improvement in the sector. Further, the empirical findings also indicate that publicly owned distribution utilities obtain average technical efficiencies of 71.3%, which is lower than privately owned distribution utilities, which achieve average technical efficiencies of 85.7%.

Research limitations/implications

Power supply quality indicators such as SAIFI, SAIDI, CAIFI, etc. and unobserved heterogeneity also influence the efficiency analysis of electricity distribution utilities. Hence, these parameters as explanatory variables can be incorporated in the future work.

Practical implications

The results obtained from this empirical study would likely be helpful for utility managers and policymakers to know how well they are performing, and how a better corporate strategy a particular utility can formulate to improve its operational efficiency and also its position in the marketplace.

Originality/value

This paper is amongst the first significant attempts that implement SFA approach to the panel dataset over a longer period of time – 2006 to 2013, so, as to evaluate and analyse the operational efficiency of Indian electricity distribution utilities in a single framework after the enactment of Electricity Act (2003). Unlike previous studies, this study investigates the degree to which various exogenous (or environmental) factors influence efficiency levels in these utilities.
