Abstract

Liberty Industries was founded in 1964 by its current President and Chairman of the Board, Charles E. Trebilcock. It began as a small industrial wholesale lumber firm located in northeastern Ohio, specializing in wood packaging products. The original plan called for a regionalized concentration of sales in a four‐ to five‐state area. Liberty experienced moderate growth during its first nine years, when it functioned as a three‐person organization. In 1973, the firm decided to increase field sales by developing an inside support department. A marketing manager was hired, as well as several product specialists. As a result, sales increased more than 13 times from 1972 through 1979. (See Exhibit 1.)

Abstract

This chapter explores how hybrid organizations navigate the challenges (and opportunities) associated with advancing unconventional logic combinations. It draws from a study of the 180-year history of sheltered workshops in the United States. Sheltered workshops are hybrids that combine social and commercial logics to provide gainful employment to individuals with disabilities. This chapter theorizes a connection between the governance system – that is, country-based social norms and regulatory settlements – framing hybrids and the agency that allows them the discretion required to advance unconventional combinations. It introduces the term hybrid agency to describe this connection and identifies four types: upstream, midstream, downstream, and crosscurrent. Upstream agency draws from the entrepreneurial vision of charismatic founders. It allows hybrids the discretion to advance unconventional logic combinations in unsupportive times, but it also requires them to observe certain dominant cultural norms. Midstream agency draws from hybrids’ adaptation and advocacy skills and resources in periods of historical change. It allows access to resources and legitimacy for unconventional combinations. Downstream agency draws from organizational slack possible in supportive times. Slack eases tensions and tradeoffs between conflicting logics but may also fuel mission drift. Finally, crosscurrent agency also draws from hybrids’ adaptation and advocacy skills and resources. It provides hybrids with the opportunity to grapple with challenges in periods of contestation.

Abstract

Purpose

The consumption of no-and low-alcohol (NoLo) wines has emerged as a growing trend among Italian millennials, reflecting a shift towards healthier and more mindful drinking habits. This paper delves into the social factors driving this trend, employing the rational of habit theory to provide a comprehensive understanding of NoLo wines consumption as a social behaviour among Italian millennials.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design comprises symmetrical and asymmetrical approach. The study employs Cluster and fsQCA to understand the granularities of NoLo wine consumption.

Findings

The present study reveals that young adults are willingness to pay (WTP) more for NoLo wine in exchange of improved health benefits as a reward. The contrarian observation of relatively consumers with low average income exhibiting the high willingness to pay more for NoLo wine.

Research limitations/implications

The sample is limited to Italy and skewed in terms of NoLo wine consumption. The participants were aware of NoLo wine but did not consume it in the past year. The study identified the paradoxical stance of low average family income group exhibiting more willingness-to-pay for de-alcoholised wine.

Practical implications

Firstly, young adults are increasingly health-conscious, seeking alternatives to alcohol that promote well-being and reduce health risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption. Secondly, mindfulness practices have gained popularity among young adults for altering self-perception, leading to a preference for beverages that align with mindful consumption and stress reduction. NoLo wine offers a suitable alternative, providing a similar sensory experience without the intoxicating effects of alcohol.

Social implications

Habit theory, pioneered by James (1890), posits that habits are formed through a three-stage process: cue, routine and reward. In the context of NoLo wine consumption, cues can include social gatherings, dining occasions or stress relief triggers. The routine involves the act of consuming NoLo wine, while the reward stems from the perceived benefits of this wine, such as reduced alcohol intake, improved health and social acceptance. The prevalence of NoLo wine consumption among Italian young adults can be attributed to a confluence of social factors.

Originality/value

The paper attempts to evaluate the contrarian case using fsQCA and the conceptual configuration of necessary conditions, viz. self-perception, social norms and health-consciousness.

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to consider the importance of the Chicago School in urban sociology today, both theoretically and methodologically. I will start by showing some indicators and reflections on its importance in American urban sociology. I will then focus on how this heritage has been used and adapted in Italy. In particular, I will present some theoretical and empirical studies implemented in the Bologna metropolitan area by a group of sociologists who, in the Italian context are probably using the Chicago School tools to study urban change and urban problems most explicitly. My contribution is based on bibliographic research carried out both in Italy and in the United States, as well as on some interviews conducted with American urban sociologists. The main findings show the persistent importance of several key elements of the Chicago School, both in Italy and in the United States: the general theoretical approach (space and place affect people), some specific concepts (community, neighborhood, and natural area), and methodology (combination of qualitative and quantitative tools).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to suggest that nutritious food intake is a somewhat overlooked yet essential aspect of corporate wellness that has the potential to help provide organizations with a sustainable competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper first discusses the resource‐based view, identifying ways in which nutritious food intake across an organization may serve to create rare and inimitable organizational resources leading to a competitive advantage. It then presents a basic overview of the fundamentals of nutritious food intake. It proceeds to review the transtheoretical stages of change model in the context of tailored nutrition interventions in organizations, providing a detailed overview of key individual behavior focused and environmental focused change strategies along with a discussion of types of technical delivery systems.

Findings

The paper suggests that an organization may be able to use a tailored stage‐based nutrition intervention as part of a comprehensive wellness program in order to help create a sustainable competitive advantage based on the nutritious food intake of its members.

Research limitations/implications

Future researchers should continue to examine the effectiveness of stage‐based computer tailored nutrition interventions and their delivery systems, particularly in the context of comprehensive corporate wellness plans and the extent to which this serves to create a competitive advantage through lower direct healthcare costs and higher worker productivity.

Practical implications

Organizational leaders should carefully consider the strategies and methodologies presented in this paper when designing and implementing nutrition interventions as part of a broad corporate wellness program.

Originality/value

This paper makes a valuable contribution to the organizational literature by recognizing the potential for the application of the transtheoretical stages of change model from the field of nutrition education within the context of the resource‐based view of organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

This research paper explores the transformative potential of Industry 5.0 for environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors within corporate settings. This study aims to elucidate the role of Industry 5.0 and its related technologies in influencing ESG factors, explore potential risks linked to ESG and present strategies for mitigation through Industry 5.0.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is the literature review that introduces Industry 5.0 as a pivotal factor in implementing and mitigating ESG and its related risks. It outlines Industry 5.0's characteristics, driven by advanced technologies.

Findings

Literature reviews suggest that Industry 5.0 has the potential to significantly influence ESG factors within corporate settings. It can promote sustainability, enhance working conditions and offer operational advantages.

Practical implications

The practical implications of this research paper are twofold. First, it provides valuable insights to policymakers, organizations and regulatory bodies, guiding them in adapting their frameworks to embrace Industry 5.0. This adaptation is essential for achieving ESG goals and facilitating sustainable development. Second, it highlights the critical role of Industry 5.0 in mitigating ESG-related risks, offering a robust structure for sustainable development.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the significant supply chain issues in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) food industry. The objectives are to identify the major themes and the dynamic evolution of SME food supply chain (FSC) issues, the current research trends, the different modelling approaches used in SME FSC, and the most addressed SME food sector.

Design/methodology/approach

In all, 3,733 published articles from 2002 to 2018 in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database were collected, from which 1,091 articles were shortlisted for the review. The authors used bibliographic coupling combined with co-word analysis to identify the historical relations of the research themes that emerged during the periods 2002–2014 and 2002–2018.

Findings

This research identified five major research themes such as production and distribution in alternative food networks, relationship, safety and standards in the FSC, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission impact of the farm food system, traceability and product quality in FSC and asymmetric price transmission in the FSC. Among the identified themes, GHG emission impact of the farm food system and traceability and product quality in the FSC have received increasing attention in recent years. The dairy sector is the most addressed sector (36 per cent), followed by fruits and vegetables (27 per cent), meat and poultry (18 per cent), seafood (10 per cent) and grains and oilseed (8 per cent). It is also identified that the dairy sector has received significant attention in the “GHG Emission impact of farm food system” theme. Similarly, meat and poultry sectors have received much attention in the “Traceability and product quality in the food supply chain” theme. Also, the authors identified that the empirical modelling approaches are the most commonly used solution methodology, followed by the conceptual/qualitative methods in the SME FSC.

Originality/value

This study maps and summarizes the existing knowledge base of supply chain issues in the SME food sector. The results of this review provide the major research areas, most commonly used approaches and food sectors addressed. This study also highlights the research gaps and potential future research direction.
