Abstract

Conventional industrial robots are low payload devices and this has been state of the art for many years. The laws of physics mitigate against the easy implementation of large robots. As robots become larger, the structure and drive natural frequency decreases, limiting the system gain and rapidly degrading the accuracy and speed of operation to an impractical level, to mention only some of the problems related to large robot technology.

Abstract

In May 1974, a new research programme entitled “Humanization of Working Life” was published by the Ministry of Research and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its aims are to temper and to reduce the hindrances, damage, harassments and handicaps of working life. What is involved here is an improvement in the content of work and in relationships at work, i.e. entire working processes are to be reformed comprising both organisational and control functions. Moreover, facilities are to be created for improved communication and co‐operation between workers. Situations leading to both over‐stress and lack of stress are to be reduced insofar as they are caused by the harmful effects of noise, vibrations, dangerous substances, etc. as well as by too few or one‐sided mental demands. Special attention is to be paid to any stresses of a combined nature that might occur and their effects. The number of accidents at work is to be cut by improving safety at work. Finally, the reciprocal relationships are to be examined, within the framework of the research programme, between working life and other aspects of life; and strategies will be developed for further humanization of working life by taking into consideration numerous other factors of a political, economic and technical nature.

IN the 25 years that this journal has been published the whole aspect of work study has changed. Once it was time and motion study. Today it is indeed more close to our title: WORK STUDY. For the plain fact is that the job we cover and expound is now the whole gamut of the study of every aspect of work. No longer is this confined to methods of getting more work (admittedly with less fatigue) out of the hours actually worked. Today the accent is on worker participation and job satisfaction.

Abstract

Based on the successful hardware and software architecture of Care‐O‐bot, a new generation of mobile robots has recently been designed at Fraunhofer Institute of Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA). The robots have been created to communicate with and to entertain visitors in a museum. Their tasks include welcoming visitors, leading a guided tour through the museum or playing with a ball. In this article the hardware platform of the robots and their features such as navigation and communication skills, their safety concept and handling are outlined. Further, the underlying control software of the robots is described. Finally, the application of the robots at the Museum für Kommunikation in Berlin is presented. The robots have been running in this museum daily since 25 March 2000 without noteworthy problems.

Abstract

The paper presents design details and applications of the recently developed 3‐D laser radar from Z+F. It presents models which have been constructed using the data from “inspection of tunnel tubes”, modelling of a “car body welding cell” and a “car body gripper” in the automotive industry as well as a “chemical process plant”. The laser radar was developed for use in industrial environments. Its twin design aims are measurement performance and robustness. The laser radar can be used with a range of mechanical beam deflection units to meet the needs of specific applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of research on robotics in travel, tourism and hospitality, and to identify research gaps and directions for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyzes 131 publications published during 1993-2019, identified via Scopus, Web of Science, ResearchGate, Academia.edu and Google Scholar. It offers quantitative analysis of frequencies and cross-tables and qualitative thematic analysis of the publications within each of seven identified domains.

Findings

The paper identifies “Robot,” “Human,” “Robot manufacturer,” “Travel/tourism/hospitality company,” “Servicescape,” “External environment” and “Education, training and research” as the research domains. Most research studies are dedicated to robots in restaurants, airports, hotels and bars. Papers tend to apply engineering methods, but experiments and surveys grow in popularity. Asia-Pacific countries account for much of the empirical research.

Research limitations/implications

The analysis was limited to publications indexed in four databases and one search engine. Only publications in English were considered. Growing opportunities for those who are anxious to publish in the field are identified. Importantly, emerging research is branching out from the engineering of robots to the possibilities for human/robot interactions and their use for service providers, opening up new avenues of research for tourism and hospitality scholars.

Practical implications

The paper identified a myriad of application areas for robots across various tourism and hospitality sectors. Service providers must critically think about how robots affect the servicescape and how it needs to be adjusted or re-imagined to ensure that robots and employees can augment the service experiences (co-)created within it.

Originality/value

This is the first study to systematically analyze research publications on robotics in travel, tourism and hospitality.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to address the modelling and optimization of fully flexible assembly systems (F‐FAS), a new concept in flexible automation recently introduced by the authors.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a mathematical model of the F‐FAS, which makes it possible to predict its efficiency, throughput and unit direct production costs, correlating such values with system and production variables. The mathematical model proposed in the paper was derived from experimental and simulation data, which were analysed for a wide range of different productions and system settings.

Findings

Correlation analysis revealed that there are three main determinants of the efficiency of the F‐FAS: the number of components (types of parts) used to assemble the models (production variable); the average complexity of the models to be assembled (production variable); the ratio of the average perimeter of components (production variable) over a significant dimension of the working plane (system variable). Such parameters makes it possible to estimate the maximum attainable efficiency of the F‐FAS, and to calculate the optimal setting of the feeder which makes it possible to obtain such efficiency during the execution of the whole production order.

Originality/value

The model presented in the paper makes it possible to quantify in advance the real potential of the F‐FAS, according to the characteristics of the production mix and type of components to be assembled. By using the methodologies presented in the paper, one can first evaluate the convenience of the F‐FAS approach with respect to traditional FAS technology and manual assembly, then identify the optimal design and settings of the F‐FAS, according to the needs of a specific application. As a result, not only can the investment on the automated assembly system be accurately evaluated in advance, but also the return on investment can be maximized.
