Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of high-performance (HP) human resource (HR) practices on employee job engagement and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and the moderating effects of transformational leadership.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 268 employees from the US and a sample of 288 employees from South Korea (SK) were used for examining the hypotheses.

Findings

The results illustrated that high-performance HR practices (HPHRP) significantly predicted employee job engagement and OCB in SK. Transformational leadership was found to moderate the associations of HPHRP with employee job engagement and OCB in SK, while in the US, transformational leadership only moderated the relationship between HPHRP and OCB.

Practical implications

Transformational leaders reinforce the quality of the employee–organization relationship and strengthen the impact of HPHRP on employees' positive work-related behaviors.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the understanding of employees' organizational behavior as exploring the relationships of HPHRP, transformational leadership, job engagement and OCB.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to extend the differential quadrature method (DQM) for solving time and space fractional non-linear partial differential equations on a semi-infinite domain.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method is the combination of the Legendre polynomials and differential quadrature method. The authors derived and constructed the new operational matrices for the fractional derivatives, which are used for the solutions of non-linear time and space fractional partial differential equations.

Findings

The fractional derivative of Lagrange polynomial is a big hurdle in classical DQM. To overcome this problem, the authors represent the Lagrange polynomial in terms of shifted Legendre polynomial. They construct a transformation matrix which transforms the Lagrange polynomial into shifted Legendre polynomial of arbitrary order. Then, they obtain the new weighting coefficients matrices for space fractional derivatives by shifted Legendre polynomials and use these in conversion of a non-linear fractional partial differential equation into a system of fractional ordinary differential equations. Convergence analysis for the proposed method is also discussed.

Originality/value

Many engineers can use the presented method for solving their time and space fractional non-linear partial differential equation models. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the differential quadrature method has never been extended or implemented for non-linear time and space fractional partial differential equations.

Cultural differences are often important motivators for tourism, but they may also be associated with increased risk perceptions. Different cultures may also perceive risk differently. Despite the importance of this topic for tourism research, few studies have aimed to systematize literature on cultural differences, tourism and risk. Therefore, the main goal of the present chapter is to elaborate a bibliometric analysis of this literature, more specifically, to quantify its sources and clusters of co-citation and terms. To achieve this goal, the publications indexed in Web of Science with the terms cultural differences and tourism (242) are analysed using VOSviewer. A qualitative analysis of the studies which focus specifically on risk is also performed.

Abstract

Notwithstanding the relevance of managerial control systems (MCS) in any organization, as well the distinctive role they can play in family business, due to its specific features, the literature rarely dealt with the role and characteristics of MCS in family business. Taking into account previous contributions from different disciplines (organization, management accounting, and family business), the current work aims to better understand the state of the art about research in the field of MCS in family business in order to identify main research gaps and propose future research directions.

Forty-five articles have been analyzed, which were issued in 29 sources. Research findings show that the literature on MCS in family business is limited and not very conclusive. Some authors focused on the type of controls, other authors outlined the role of MCS in managerialization and the relation with professionalization. A few studies focused on some specific mechanisms, especially strategic planning and compensation. Some contributes dealt with MCS’ determinants and impacts. Differences between family and non-family firms were proposed. However, a clear and organized picture of the features of MCS in family firms, their determinants, and impacts has not yet been developed. Particularly, the impact of the distinctive features of family business on MCS represents an underdeveloped research field along with how MCS can be differently developed and used in different kinds of family firms. In the light of findings of the literature review, we propose a reference research framework on MCS in family business.

Abstract

This chapter contributes to the overall tourist satisfaction to local economies using sustainable practices. The aim therefore is to analyse to what extent the characteristics of a product and service can bridge the gap between locals and visitors. This chapter is based on secondary data. We find evidence for six themes which are considered to be the most theoretical issue affecting the studies on street food in tourism considered in the analysis.

Results show that street food tourism, as a new paradigm, can be a viable option while thinking the process of sustainable tourism development in emerging destinations. Our findings have clear implications for the fast growing literature on overtourism and related perverse impacts (conceptual contribution) giving also additional options to Destination Marketing Organisations' (DMOs) managers in terms of strategy to combat tourismphobia analysed in the study. Proposals for future research will also be outlined.

Design/methodology/approach

The present paper deals with the numerical study of wave propagation in coupled thermoelastic diffusive medium by using DQ method together with fourth‐order Runge‐Kutta method.

Findings

The paper finds solutions of displacements, temperature change and concentration.

Research limitations/implications

The paper can be sued to solve non‐linear partial differential equations.

Originality/value

The solutions of displacements, temperature change and concentration are illustrated graphically. Numerical examples show that the method yields very good results.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to capture the effective behaviour of nonlinear coupled advection-diffusion-reaction systems and develop a new computational scheme based on differential quadrature method.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed scheme converts the coupled system into a system of ordinary differential equations. Finally, the obtained system is solved by a four-stage RK4 scheme.

Findings

The developed scheme helped to capture the different types of patterns of nonlinear time-dependent coupled advection-diffusion-reaction systems such as Brusselator model, Chemo-taxis model and linear model which are similar to the existing patterns of the models.

Originality/value

The originality lies in the fact that the developed scheme is new for coupled advection-diffusion-reaction systems such as Brusselator model, Chemo-taxis model and linear models. Second, the captured pattern is similar to the existing patterns of the models.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the coupled effects of electrohydrodynamic and gravity forces on the circulation effectiveness of working fluid in an inclined micro heat pipe driven by electroosmotic flow. The effects of the three competing forces, namely, the capillary, the gravitational and the electrohydrodyanamic forces, on the circulation effectiveness of a micro heat pipe are compared and delineated.

Design/methodology/approach

The numerical model is developed based on the conservations of mass, momentum and energy with the incorporation of the Young–Laplace equation for electroosmotic flow in an inclined micro heat pipe incorporating the gravity effects.

Findings

By inducing electroosmotic flow in a micro heat pipe, a significant increase in heat transport capacity can be attained at a reasonably low applied voltage, leading to a small temperature drop and a high thermal conductance. However, the favorably applied gravity forces pull the liquid toward the evaporator section where the onset of flooding occurs within the condenser section, generating a throat that shrinks the vapor flow passage and may lead to a complete failure on the operation of micro heat pipe. Therefore, the balance between the electrohydrodyanamic and the gravitational forces is of vital importance.

Originality/value

This study provides a detailed insight into the gravitational and electroosmotic effects on the thermal performance of an inclined micro heat pipe driven by electroosmotic flow and paves the way for the feasible practical application of electrohydrodynamic forces in a micro-scale two-phase cooling device.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method for solving nonlinear fractional partial differential equations on the semi-infinite domain and to get better and more accurate results.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors proposed a method by using the Chebyshev wavelets in conjunction with differential quadrature technique. The operational matrices for the method are derived, constructed and used for the solution of nonlinear fractional partial differential equations.

Findings

The operational matrices contain many zero entries, which lead to the high efficiency of the method and reasonable accuracy is achieved even with less number of grid points. The results are in good agreement with exact solutions and more accurate as compared to Haar wavelet method.

Originality/value

Many engineers can use the presented method for solving their nonlinear fractional models.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a numerical technique based on polynomial differential quadrature method (PDQM) to find the numerical solutions of two-space-dimensional quasilinear hyperbolic partial differential equations subject to appropriate Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The PDQM reduced the equations into a system of second order linear differential equation. The obtained system is solved by RK4 method by converting into a system of first ordinary differential equations.

Findings

The accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated by several test examples. The numerical results are found to be in good agreement with the exact solutions. The proposed technique can be applied easily for multidimensional problems.

Originality/value

The main advantage of the present scheme is that the scheme gives very accurate and similar results to the exact solutions by choosing less number of grid points and the problem can be solved up to big time. The good thing of the present technique is that it is easy to apply and gives us better accuracy in less numbers of grid points as comparison to the other numerical techniques.
