Abstract

Purpose

Modern CAD systems facilitate the creation of any surface geometry imaginable, and complex surfaces for free-form grid shells are often represented by a set of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines surface patches. But it remains an intractable issue how to generate high-quality grids on complex surfaces efficiently. To solve this issue, an automatic triangular mesh generation method is presented, based on bubble dynamics simulation and a modified Delaunay method.

Design/methodology/approach

A moderate amount of points are first distributed on a given surface. Next, by regarding the points as elastic bubbles with the same size and introducing the forces acting on bubbles, the motion control equations of bubbles are established. The equilibrium state of the bubble system is found by Verlet algorithm. Then, the Voronoi diagram on the surface is obtained by calculating the intersection between the surface and the three-dimensional (3D) Voronoi diagram of the centers of bubbles. Finally, a triangular mesh, Delaunay triangulation on the surface, is determined based on the dual change of the Voronoi diagram.

Findings

This method generates meshes on the surface directly, unlike mapping-based methods, avoiding the mapping distortion. Examples are given to demonstrate the successful execution of this method. The result also illustrates that this method is applicable to various surfaces in high automation level and resultant meshes are highly uniform and well-shaped.

Originality/value

Thus, this method provides the convenience for the geometry design of complex free-form grid structure.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to examine the perceptions of three major stakeholders – bankers, lawyers and customers – in the Islamic banking industry in Malaysia to assess their behavioural intention to use the proposed online dispute resolution (ODR) mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

The study modifies the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) within the context of ODR and its feasibility in the Malaysian Islamic banking industry. The model was extended to include trust in technology and trust in bank, which might have significant influences on the intentions of major stakeholders to use ODR for banking-related disputes. Actual use of the ODR was not included in the model as specified in the original UTAUT. Based on an internet survey, responses were obtained from about 109 respondents. The data obtained were subjected to multivariate statistical analyses.

Findings

Results obtained indicate that trust in technology and effort expectancy are the most influencing determinants of the behavioural intention to use ODR among stakeholders in the Islamic banking industry in Malaysia. However, performance expectancy and social influence did not produce significant effects on behavioural intention.

Research limitations/implications

Applying ODR in the banking industry in Malaysia will contribute to sustainable banking businesses in major Islamic finance jurisdictions. Being the most advanced region in global Islamic banking business, Asia sets the pace through theoretical and empirical studies in exploring innovative ideals such as ODR to promote sustainable business that not only ensures proper customer relationship management but also promotes consume protection.

Practical implications

Results obtained suggest that the increasing use of internet banking will make ODR the preferable mechanism for dispute resolution in small-scale disputes in retail banking. This will also require some form of predictability, enforceability and Shari‘ah compliance in the process of dispute resolution for the major stakeholders to have full confidence in the ODR mechanism. The recently introduced Financial Ombudsman Scheme in the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013 of Malaysia is expected to serve as a good legal basis for the ODR mechanism.

Originality/value

This appears to be one of the earliest attempts to examine the application of ODR in resolving Islamic banking disputes with a detailed analysis on its legal basis and implication.

Abstract

Purpose

In view of the defects of glued wood beams, a new composite member – reconstituted bamboo board reinforced glued wood beams is proposed to improve the bearing capacity of glued wood beams.

Design/methodology/approach

The bending test studied the ordinary glulam beams and the reinforced glulam beams with different layer numbers and different layer thicknesses by comparing with six kinds of glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber and one kind of ordinary glulam beams and used the method of third-point stepwise loading on the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber.

Findings

The bamboo scrimber improved the bending behavior of the ordinary glulam beams. The 10 mm bamboo scrimber layer can meet the requirements of the maximum ultimate bending capacity and minimize the defects. So 10 mm bamboo scrimber layer was the optimal thickness. During the loading process, the strain change of the normal section of the reconstituted bamboo board reinforced glued wood beam basically conforms to the plane section assumption.

Originality/value

The bending rigidities of the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber increased up to 28.25%, 8.53% and 76.67%, and the ultimate bending capacity increased from 83.44% to 99.34% with the increase of the bamboo scrimber plate layers (the replacement rate). The ultimate bending capacities and the bending rigidities of the glulam beams strengthened with bamboo scrimber increased to 52.32%∼60.18% and 90.07%∼99.34% with the changing of the bamboo scrimber thicknesses from 7.1 mm to 25 mm.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the original study of an industrial device. Industrial inductors are used to decrease the current variations, resulting from the use of modern power converters. To reduce these variations, the magnetic energy stored in these components is automatically used when the receptor is unconnected to the principal sources. Such storage is generally obtained by using a magnetic circuit containing air‐gaps. The rigidity of this circuit, associated with the magnetic stresses which appear in these areas, causes the structure to produce mechanical vibration and to emit audible sounds.

Design/methodology/approach

Experiments, simulations and test devices are used to determine the main physical phenomenon that generates the undesirable audible noise. The resulting knowledge is used to design a quieter device.

Findings

The mechanical vibrations and emitted noises are attached to magnetic effects. Even if it is not possible to suppress all these effects, the level of sound emitted can be decreased through a suitable design of the magnetic core.

Originality/value

Industrial inductors are usually built and designed using methods coming from the transformer studies. A new concept for the design of the magnetic core is presented. Experimental approaches and numerical simulations are performed in order to highlight the physical behaviours of the coils and their magnetic coupling to the magnetic core. It appears that breaking the magnetic core into free parts is an original solution that decreases the emitted noise.
