Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to build a warranty cost model for consumer electronics with short lifecycle and frequently upgraded process in generations. Meanwhile, a new warranty service method of replacing the failed old generation (OG) products by new generation (NG) products is proposed to cease the service capability for the OG products from manufacturers’ viewpoint.
Design/methodology/approach
A model is built to find an optimal time to switch to the new warranty service method to minimize the warranty cost of the OG products. The inventory cost of spare parts of OG products for warranty, repair cost and manufacturing cost of NG products are taken into account. Meanwhile, a mixed strategy is studied by providing options to customers for replacing their failed OG products with NG products by paying a discounted price of the OG products. Moreover, numerical experiments are conducted to test the effects of different parameters on the optimal solutions.
Findings
Solutions to the proposed model are discussed with analytic method and it is proved that the optimal solution exists in the considered situations. The mixed strategy considering the willingness of customers can result in the reduction of the warranty cost.
Originality/value
This paper analyzes the situation that more than one generations of products are in the marketplace simultaneously. Furthermore, this work makes a useful contribution for manufacturers to decrease their warranty cost by changing the service method, and provides the optimal warranty strategy for manufacturers considering the willingness of customers.

Abstract
Purpose
With the rapid development of internet technology, open online social networks provide a broader platform for information spreading. While dissemination of information provides convenience for life, it also brings many problems such as security risks and public opinion orientation. Various negative, malicious and false information spread across regions, which seriously affect social harmony and national security. Therefore, this paper aims to minimize negative information such as online rumors that has attracted extensive attention. The most existing algorithms for blocking rumors have prevented the spread of rumors to some extent, but these algorithms are designed based on entire social networks, mainly focusing on the microstructure of the network, i.e. the pairwise relationship or similarity between nodes. The blocking effect of these algorithms may be unsatisfactory in some networks because of the sparse data in the microstructure.
Design/methodology/approach
An algorithm for minimizing the influence of dynamic rumor based on community structure is proposed in this paper. The algorithm first divides the network into communities, and integrates the influence of each node within communities and rumor influence probability to measure the influence of each node in the entire network, and then selects key nodes and bridge nodes in communities as blocked nodes. After that, a dynamic blocking strategy is adopted to improve the blocking effect of rumors.
Findings
Community structure is one of the most prominent features of networks. It reveals the organizational structure and functional components of a network from a mesoscopic level. The utilization of community structure can provide effective and rich information to solve the problem of data sparsity in the microstructure, thus effectively improve the blocking effect. Extensive experiments on two real-world data sets have validated that the proposed algorithm has superior performance than the baseline algorithms.
Originality/value
As an important research direction of social network analysis, rumor minimization has a profound effect on the harmony and stability of society and the development of social media. However, because the rumor spread has the characteristics of multiple propagation paths, fast propagation speed, wide propagation area and time-varying, it is a huge challenge to improve the effectiveness of the rumor blocking algorithm.

Abstract
A novel chitosan derivative, O-acrylamidomethyl-HTCC (NMA-HTCC) was synthesized in two steps. First, N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammonium)propyl] chitosan chloride (HTCC) was prepared by introducing 2,3-epoxy propane trimethlyl ammonium chloride(GTA) on the amino groups of chitosan. HTCC was further modified by reacting with N-methylolacrylamide (NMA) on the primary alcohol groups (C-6) on the chitosan. The effect of modified chitosan on the dyeing properties of cotton fabric was studied by measuring the dye uptake and K/S values of the treated substrates with different treating processes under salt-free conditions. The antimicrobial activity of modified chitosan against Escherichia coli and the durability of antimicrobial activity was assessed using percentage reduction rate of the bacterium with different treating processes. The results indicate that modified chitosan treated cotton fabric shows increased dye uptake, K/S values and fastness, and its antimicrobial activity and durability are much better than chitosan treated cotton fabric.

Abstract
Purpose
Supply chains, as prototypical uncertain systems, are crucial for national security and socioeconomic development. Grey system theory (GST) is an effective tool for addressing uncertainties and has played a pivotal role in related research within the supply chain domain. This study aims to systematically summarize the research achievements and knowledge structures pertaining to GST in supply chain studies. Current and potential research hotspots are also analyzed.
Design/methodology/approach
CiteSpace is used to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 1,617 articles sourced from the Web of Science (WOS). The analysis aims to summarize the current state of research and the knowledge structure in the field. A strategic diagram incorporating two data indicators, namely, novelty and concern, is constructed based on keyword clustering to identify and analyze current and potential research hotspots.
Findings
Studies utilizing GST to guide supply chain practices have attracted the interest of scholars from 205 research institutions across 85 countries and regions globally, which earned recognition from 183 high-level academic journals. In this field, the School of Economics and Management at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics stands out as a core research institution, with Professor Deng Julong, who is the founder of GST, being the most frequently cited scholar. Current research hotspots are complex equipment supply chains, drivers and challenges in supply chain management, supply chain risk management, closed-loop supply chain and supply chain operation in the big data era. In addition, emerging research hotspots include digital and intelligent logistics technology, sustainable supplier management, determinants and flexibility of supply chain contracts, supply chain strategy, purchase management, grey prediction of demand and consumption, grey forecasting and economy efficiency, China-specific issues and grey model construction.
Originality/value
The bibliometric analysis reveals the current state and knowledge structure of research in this field. Previous studies on research hotspots have primarily relied on subjective judgments, which lacked empirical data support. This study constructs a strategic diagram incorporating two data indicators, namely, novelty and concern, to provide a more objective and reliable analysis of research hotspots.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on the textual-analyzed data covering 2148 IPO firms in China’s stock market during the 2007–2018 period, the authors’ purpose is to examine the influence of anti-takeover provision (ATP) adoption on initial public offerings (IPO) underpricing and identify the reducing effect of the former.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors examine the sample consisting of Chinese A-share listed IPO firms between 2007 and 2018 from China Stock Market Accounting Research and Chinese Research Data Services, with ATP data collected from the IPO firm chapters. Specifically, the authors use text analysis to identify whether there are ATPs in the IPO firm chapters, as well as the number of ATPs. H1: IPO underpricing is less severe for firms adopting ATPs. H2: The effect of ATP adoption on IPO underpricing is more salient for firms in worse information environments.
Findings
The authors examine the influence of ATP adoption on IPO underpricing and identify the reducing effect of the former. This effect can be explained by the fact that adopting ATPs in IPO firm chapters can reduce information asymmetry to a large extent by helping external investors obtain more private information, which alleviates IPO underpricing. The authors also find that the reducing effect is more significant in the worsened information environment. Furthermore, the authors explore the influence of adopting ATPs on other IPO characteristics and find positive effects on IPO over-subscription, funds raised and trading activity and negative effects on listing fees.
Originality/value
This study mainly contributes to the literature from the following two aspects. First, the study enriches the literature about the influencing factors of IPO underpricing. Second, the study also enriches the literature about the economic consequences of ATP adoption. This study also has important policy implications. With the coming of the era of decentralized ownership in China’s capital market, ATP adoption has become more important and attracted more attention. Also, investors focus more on pricing efficiency. The findings in this paper provide a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between ATP adoption and IPO underpricing.

Abstract
Purpose
Food plays an important role in every culture around the world. Recently, cuisine preference analysis has become a popular research topic. However, most of these studies are conducted through questionnaires and interviews, which are highly limited by the time, cost and scope of data collection, especially when facing large-scale survey studies. Some researchers have, therefore, attempted to mine cuisine preferences based on online recipes, while this approach cannot reveal food preference from people’s perspective. Today, people are sharing what they eat on social media platforms by posting reviews about the meal, reciting the names of appetizers or entrees, and photographing as well. Such large amount of user-generated contents (UGC) has potential to indicate people’s preferences over different cuisines. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to explore Chinese cuisine preferences among online users of social media.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on both UGC and online recipes, the authors first investigated the cuisine preference distribution in different regions. Then, dish preference similarity between regions was calculated and few geographic factors were identified, which might lead to such regional similarity appeared in our study. By applying hierarchical clustering, the authors clustered regions based on dish preference and ingredient usage separately.
Findings
Experimental results show that, among 20 types of traditional Chinese cuisines, Sichuan cuisine is most favored across all regions in China. Geographical proximity is the more closely related to differences of regional dish preference than climate proximity.
Originality/value
Different from traditional definitions of regions to which cuisine belong, the authors found new association between region and cuisine based on dish preference from social media and ingredient usage of dishes. Using social media may overcome problems with using traditional questionnaires, such as high costs and long cycle for questionnaire design and answering.

Abstract
Purpose
With the development of the internet, huge numbers of reviews are generated, disseminated, and shared on e-commerce and social media websites by internet users. These reviews usually indicate users’ opinions about products or services directly, and are thus valuable for efficient marketing. The purpose of this paper is to mine online users’ attitudes from a huge pool of reviews via automatic question answering.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors make use of online reviews to complete an online investigation via automatic question answering (AQA). In the process of AQA, question generation and extraction of corresponding answers are conducted via sentiment computing. In order to verify the performance of AQA for online investigation, online reviews from a well-known travel website, namely Tuniu.com, are used as the experimental data set. Finally, the experimental results from AQA vs a traditional questionnaire are compared.
Findings
The experimental results show that results between the AQA-based automatic questionnaire and the traditional questionnaire are consistent. Hence, the AQA method is reliable in identifying users’ attitudes. Although this paper takes Chinese tourism reviews as the experimental data, the method is domain and language independent.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to use the AQA method to mine users’ attitudes towards tourism services. Using online reviews may overcome problems with using traditional questionnaires, such as high costs and long cycle for questionnaire design and answering.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to discuss the influences of surface severe plastic deformation (S2PD) on the electrochemical corrosion, pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion, stress corrosion cracking of aluminum (Al) alloys and attempt to correlate the microstructural/compositional changes with the performances.
Design/methodology/approach
This study provides a novel gradient design of structure/composition caused by S2PD for the purpose of enhancing Al alloys’ corrosion resistance.
Findings
S2PD has a significant effect on corrosion behavior of Al alloys through tuning the grain size, residual stress, composition, grain boundary phase and second phase particle distribution.
Originality/value
Although Al alloys are known to form a protective Al2O3 film, corrosion is a major challenge for the longevity of Al structures across numerous industries, especially for the infrastructures made of high-strength Al alloys. Traditional strategies of improving corrosion resistance of Al alloys heavily relied on alloying and coatings. In this review, gradient design of structure/composition caused by S2PD provides a novel strategy for corrosion protection of Al alloys, especially in the enhancement of localized corrosion resistance.

Abstract
Purpose
The color painting of ancient buildings has high historical and artistic value but is prone to aging due to long-term outdoor exposure. The purpose of this study is to develop a new type of sealing coating to mitigate the impact of ultraviolet (UV) light on color painting.
Design/methodology/approach
The new coating was subjected to a 500-h UV-aging test. Compared with the existing acrylic resin Primal AC33, the UV aging behavior of the new coating, such as color difference and gloss, was studied with aging time. The Fourier infrared spectra of the coatings were analyzed after the UV-aging test.
Findings
Compared with AC33, the antiaging performance of SF8 was substantially improved. SF8 has a lower color difference value and better light retention and hydrophobicity. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that the C-F bond and Si-O bonds in the resin of the optimized sealing coating protected the main chain C-C structure from degradation during the aging process; thus, the resin maintained good stability. The hindered amine light stabilizer TN292 added to the coating inhibited the antiaging process by trapping active free radicals.
Originality/value
To address the problem of UV aging of oil-decorated colored paintings, a new type of sealing coating with excellent antiaging properties was developed, laying the foundation for its demonstration application on the surface of ancient buildings.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to obtain the environmental factor, which has the greatest effect on the corrosion rate of Q235 carbon steel under thin electrolyte layer, and to analyze the effect of this factor on the corrosion morphology, corrosion products and polarization process of Q235 carbon steel.
Design/methodology/approach
An electrochemical device, which can be used under thin electrolyte layer is designed to measure the corrosion current in different environments. Response surface methodology (RSM) is introduced to analyze the effect of environmental factors on corrosion rate. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique are used to analyze the results. The Tafel slopes of anode and cathode in different humidity and solution are calculated by least square method.
Findings
The three environmental factors are ranked according to importance, namely, humidity, temperature and chloride ion deposition rate. In a high humidity environment, the relative content of α-FeOOH in the corrosion product is high and the relative content of β-FeOOH is low. The higher the humidity, the lower the degree of anodic blockage, whereas the degree of cathodic blockage is independent of humidity. The above experiments confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of the device, indicating it can be used for the screening of corrosive environmental factors.
Originality/value
In this paper, an electrochemical device under thin film is designed, which can simulate atmospheric corrosion well. Subsequent SEM and XRD confirmed the reliability of the data measured by this device. The introduction of a scientific RSM can overcome the limitations of orthogonal experiments and more specifically and intuitively analyze the effects of environmental factors on corrosion rates.
