Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to estimate the magnetic saturation and end effect of linear switched reluctance machines (LSRMs) with fully pitched winding configuration used in the wave energy conversion.

Design/methodology/approach

The magnetic saturation and strong coupling make it very difficult to derive a comprehensive mathematical model for the behavior of the LSRMs. Meanwhile, the various end effects could not be comprehensively considered in the two‐dimensional model which is widely studied. Therefore, the magnetic equivalent circuit model including the three‐dimensional (3‐D) effects is presented in this paper and 3‐D finite element analysis (FEA) is used to validate the mathematical model.

Findings

The results from 3‐D FEA are in good agreement with the numerical simulation, which validates the accuracy of the magnetic equivalent circuit modeling method.

Practical implications

This technique helps one to know the influence exerted by the magnet saturation and end effect of LSRMs and provides a powerful computer‐aided analysis tool. Meanwhile, this modeling method supplies accurate values for the following study of reliable control algorithm.

Originality/value

The paper presents a magnetic equivalent method to estimate the magnetic saturation and end effect of LSRMs with fully pitched winding configuration used in the wave energy conversion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how the EStra-Many method works on optimization problems characterized by high-dimensionality of the objective space. Moreover, a comparison with a more classical approach (a constrained bi-objective problem solved by means of NSGA-II) is done.

Design/methodology/approach

The six reactances of a compensation network (CN) for a wireless power transfer system (WPTS) are synthesized by means of an automated optimal design. In particular, an evolutionary algorithm EStra-Many coupled with a sorting strategy has been applied to an optimization problem with four objective functions (OFs). To assess the obtained results, a classical genetic algorithm NSGA-II has been run on a bi-objective problem, constrained by two functions, and the solutions have been analyzed and compared with the ones obtained by EStra-Many.

Findings

The proposed EStra-Many method identified a solution (CN synthesis) that enhances the WPTS, considering all the four OFs. In particular, to assess the synthesized CN, the Bode diagram of the frequency response and a circuital simulation were evaluated a posteriori; they showed good performance of the CN, with smooth response and without unwanted oscillations when fed by a square wave signal with offset. The EStra-Many method has been able to find a good solution among all the feasible solutions, showing potentiality also for other fields of research, in fact, a solution nondominated with respect to the starting point has been identified. From the methodological viewpoint, the main finding is a new formulation of the many-objective optimization problem based on the concept of degree of conflict, which gives rise to an implementation free from hierarchical weights.

Originality/value

The new approach EStra-Many used in this paper showed to properly find an optimal solution, trading-off multiple objectives. The compensation network so synthesized by the proposed method showed good properties in terms of frequency response and robustness. The proposed method, able to deal effectively with four OFs, could be applied to solve problems with a higher number of OFs in a variety of applications because of its generality.

Abstract

Purpose

During the centennial anniversary of Xinhai Revolution in 2011, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television supported the production of 1911 for celebrating such an important event that lead to the rise of the Republic of China in the contemporary Chinese history. This paper aims to reflect upon this film in relation to China’s propagation of “Greater China” for the Empire-building project.

Design/methodology/approach

By scrutinizing the film text and following the strait controversies over the film, this paper demonstrates how the Chinese Communist agents employed the coproduction model with Hong Kong for globalizing a cinematic discourse of Greater China in part of their Empire-building project.

Findings

The study challenges how contemporary Chinese history is ideologically and politically manipulated for advancing the Chinese Communist propaganda over Taiwan. The overall objective is to reflect upon the longstanding historical divergences that stand on the current geopolitical envision and strategy of China for reunification.

Originality/value

This paper provides an interdisciplinary reflection upon the intricate post-Cold War politics in part of the contemporary Chinese cinema under the China–Hong Kong coproduction model. The findings advance novel and timely insights into China’s current envision and strategy for reunification.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve the reactive power adjustment and the overvoltage suppression problems in the extra high voltage (EHV) long distance grid, which often appears transient overvoltage, light load loss and other issues.

Design/methodology/approach

One 800 kV EHV magnetically saturation controllable reactor (MSCR) used self-power supply control system is designed. The structure and the working mechanism of the novel MSCR are analyzed in detail. Then the control and capacity step adjustment characteristics are obtained by experiments. The harmonic characteristic is studied by theoretical analysis and low voltage test.

Findings

To solve the problem of harmonics in the working current of nets windings, the fifth and the seventh filers are equipped between the compensation windings and the control system. The effectiveness of the harmonic suppression method is proved by simulation and experiments.

Originality/value

It proves that the 800 kV EHV MSCR design in this paper can achieve the purpose of the reactive power continuous linear adjustment, and the capacity adjustment is sensitive. After filtering, the harmonics level of the working current meets the standard of the EHV grid.
