Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of graphene, basalt flakes and their synergy on the corrosion resistance of zinc-rich coatings. As the important heavy-duty anticorrosion coatings, zinc-rich coatings provided cathodic protection for the substrate. However, to ensure cathodic protection, a large number of zinc powder made the penetration resistance known as the weakness of zinc-rich coatings. Therefore, graphene and basalt flakes were introduced into zinc-rich coatings to coordinate its cathodic protection and shielding performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Three kinds of coatings were prepared; they were graphene modified zinc-rich coatings, basalt flakes modified zinc-rich coatings and graphene-basalt flakes modified zinc-rich coatings. The anticorrosion behavior of painted steel was studied by using the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique in chloride solutions. The equivalent circuit methods were used for EIS analysis to obtain the electrode process structure of the coated steel system. Simultaneously, the corrosion resistance of the three coatings was evaluated by water resistance test, salt water resistance test and salt spray test.
Findings
The study found that the addition of a small amount of graphene and basalt flakes significantly improved the anticorrosion performance of coatings by enhancing their shielding ability against corrosive media and increasing the resistance of the electrochemical reaction. The modified coatings exhibited higher water resistance, salt water resistance and salt spray resistance. The graphene-basalt flakes modified zinc-rich coatings demonstrated the best anticorrosion effect. The presence of basalt scales and graphene oxide in the coatings significantly reduced the water content and slowed down the water penetration rate in the coatings, thus prolonging the coating life and improving anticorrosion effects. The modification of zinc-rich coatings with graphene and basalt flakes improved the utilization rate of zinc powder and the shielding property of coatings against corrosive media, thus strengthening the protective effect on steel structures and prolonging the service life of anticorrosion coatings.
Originality/value
The significance of developing graphene-basalt flakes modified zinc-rich coatings lies in their potential to offer superior performance in corrosive environments, leading to prolonged service life of metallic structures, reduced maintenance costs and a safer working environment. Furthermore, such coatings can be used in various industrial applications, including bridges, pipelines and offshore structures, among others.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to solve the problem that pipes conveying fluid are faced with severe reliability failures under the complicated working environment.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper proposes a dynamic reliability and variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) strategy with non-probabilistic convex model for pipes conveying fluid based on the first passage principle failure mechanism. To illustrate the influence of input uncertainty on output uncertainty of non-probability, the main index and the total index of variance-based GSA analysis are used. Furthermore, considering the efficiency of traditional simulation method, an active learning Kriging surrogate model is introduced to estimate the dynamic reliability and GSA indices of the structure system under random vibration.
Findings
The variance-based GSA analysis can measure the effect of input variables of convex model on the dynamic reliability, which provides useful reference and guidance for the design and optimization of pipes conveying fluid. For designers, the rankings and values of main and total indices have essential guiding role in engineering practice.
Originality/value
The effectiveness of the proposed method to calculate the dynamic reliability and sensitivity of pipes conveying fluid while ensuring the calculation accuracy and efficiency in the meantime.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the resonance failure sensitivity analysis of straight-tapered assembled pipe conveying nonuniform axial fluid by an active learning Kriging (ALK) method.
Design/methodology/approach
In this study, first, the motion equation of straight-tapered assembled pipe conveying nonuniform fluid is built. Second, the Galerkin method is used for calculating the natural frequency of assembled pipe conveying nonuniform fluid. Third, the ALK method based on expected risk function (ERF) is used to calculate the resonance failure probability and moment independent global sensitivity analysis.
Findings
The findings of this paper highlight that the eigenfrequency and critical velocity of uniform fluid-conveying pipe are less than the reality and the error is biggest in first-order natural frequency. The importance ranking of input variables affecting the resonance failure can be obtained. The importance ranking is different for a different velocity and mode number. By reducing the uncertainty of variables with a high index, the resonance failure probability can be reduced maximally.
Research limitations/implications
There are no experiments on the eigenfrequency and critical velocity. There is no experiments about natural frequency and critical velocity of straight tapered assembled pipe to verify the theory in this paper.
Originality/value
The originality of this paper lies as follows: the motion equation of straight-tapered pipe conveying nonuniform fluid is first obtained. The eigenfrequency of nonuniform fluid and uniform fluid inside the assembled pipe are compared. The resonance reliability analysis of straight-tapered assembled pipe is first proposed. From the results, it is observed that the resonance failure probability can be reduced efficiently.

This paper aims to develop a method for evaluating the failure probability and global sensitivity of multiple failure modes based on convex-probability hybrid uncertainty.
Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to develop a method for evaluating the failure probability and global sensitivity of multiple failure modes based on convex-probability hybrid uncertainty.
Design/methodology/approach
The uncertainty information of the input variable is considered as convex-probability hybrid uncertainty. Moment-independent variable global sensitivity index based on the system failure probability is proposed to quantify the effect of the input variable on the system failure probability. Two-mode sensitivity indices are adopted to characterize the effect of each failure mode on the system failure probability. The method based on active learning Kriging (ALK) model with a truncated candidate regions (TCR) is adopted to evaluate the systems failure probability, as well as sensitivity index and this method is termed as ALK-TCR.
Findings
The results of five examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the sensitivity index and the efficiency of the ALK-TCR method in solving the problem of multiple failure modes based on the convex-probability hybrid uncertainty.
Originality/value
Convex-probability hybrid uncertainty is considered on system reliability analysis. Moment-independent variable sensitivity index based on the system failure probability is proposed. Mode sensitivity indices are extended to hybrid uncertain reliability model. An effective global sensitivity analysis approach is developed for the multiple failure modes based on convex-probability hybrid uncertainty.

Abstract
Purpose
The patent thickets exacerbate patent infringement, especially in patent-intensive industries. Damages are a crucial remedy for patent infringement, upholding innovation incentives in the patent system. This paper aims to examine the impact of damages on the subsequent innovation performance of plaintiff and defendant firms and the moderating role of patent-intensive industries in these effects.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on data from 1,062 Chinese firms involved in patent infringement litigation, this paper uses Poisson panel regression models to examine the dynamic impact of damages on incremental and breakthrough innovation performance for plaintiff and defendant firms and further validates the moderating role of patent-intensive industries on the impacts. Additionally, this paper conducts heterogeneity analysis by categorizing the sample into micro and small enterprises (MSEs) and medium and large enterprises (MLEs).
Findings
This paper shows that MLE plaintiffs skew toward incremental rather than breakthrough innovations after awarding damages, whereas MSEs transiently engage in high-level innovation activities. (2) Plaintiffs with higher payout ratios are more inclined toward undertaking breakthrough innovations. (3) Awarded damages significantly inhibit the innovative output of defendants at varying levels of innovation. (4) Plaintiff firms in patent-intensive industries show more innovation after awarding damages than those in other sectors, but damages do not effectively encourage MSEs to innovate. Defendants in patent-intensive industries are also more reluctant to innovate after damages.
Originality/value
This paper empirically investigates the relationship between patent damages and firms' subsequent innovation performance in terms of litigation status, organizational scale and level of technological innovation. Besides, this paper reveals the differences in the impact of patent protection on firms' innovation in patent-intensive industries versus other industries.

Abstract
This chapter examines the development of accounting thought and practices in China with the purpose of illustrating its relevance to current accounting policies and practices. The review indicates that changes in accounting in China did not usually occur completely and easily. Over the past three decades, while Chinese accounting has gradually moved toward the Anglo-American model, convergence has presented unique features in China. For example, the review suggests that the accounting reforms in China have been heavily government-driven and that uniform accounting systems still remain. Chinese regulators maintain a cautious attitude toward the application of fair value and professional judgment, which are essentially the center of the Anglo-American accounting system. Furthermore, Chinese accounting regulators have a different view of business combinations from the IASB and have developed alternative accounting methods for those transactions. China’s departure from IFRS reflects its politico-economic context and essentially challenges the IASB’s goal of achieving international accounting convergence. China’s approach to internationally acceptable practices is likely to have implications for the effectiveness of the imported ideas.

Abstract
Developing new businesses and managing operations in China require an in‐depth knowledge of business practices and conditions. This article applies the popular strategic tool of SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis to plant location decisions in mainland China. In this context, notably comprehensive factors and issues with important influence on plant location decisions are going to be examined. Since China's economic development has serious imbalances in its vast territory, the best sites for plant location will also be explored based more on regional infrastructure and local skill levels than on cost‐based factors alone. In addition to these explicit considerations of China's environment for investment, implicit concepts in Chinese society that have strong influence on the businesses' success are also discussed to further aid managers in decision making.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate market power in dairy industry in China. Specifically, we analyze market power for different firm size, locations of region and city empirically.
Design/methodology/approach
We estimate the market power by controlling the unobserved price heterogeneity. The econometric model was developed through a typical production function. We added three dummy variables to differentiate firms of different sizes, at urban or rural locations, and in east or other regions, according to the characteristics of the dairy industry. A sample including 511 observations were used to do the regression.
Findings
Our results show that Chinese dairy industry as a whole is a competitive industry in general, while the large firms have gained considerable market power. The firms locate in the eastern area grow slower than firms locate in the middle and western area.
Originality/value
The authors believe that this is the first study to analyze the market power in China’s dairy industry by controlling the unobserved price heterogeneity. Dairy is usually thought to be competitive, while in our paper we found that large firms can exercise market power while small firms operate in a competitive market.

Abstract
Purpose
China has become an economic powerhouse in historic terms but there are a number of challenges to its continued prosperity. The aim of this paper is to more fully understand China's propensity for creative innovation, which is seen as an important next stage in its continued development.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is conceptual but uses historical and secondary data to support its assumptions. The paper was written in conjunction with the 1st Global Peter F. Drucker Forum (celebrating 100 years since his birth) and attempts to continue his challenge of “the hard work of thinking”.
Findings
China has a long history of successful innovation. However, Confucian belief, a single despot and a closing off to the rest of the world have thwarted its innovative edge. The key to rekindling the entrepreneurial spirit is seen largely as an internal battle based on the state's ability to balance the institution of government with the needs of a burgeoning prospective creative class. This paper identifies that much of this change will rely on quality‐related developments rather than simply investments of financial capital.
Originality/value
The ability to create new things is a challenge to developing economies that rely on low cost and imitation. China's success in innovation will have substantial implications for developed nations both economically and geo‐politically. China wants to be a significant player on a global scale and this paper sheds light on its potential to achieve such an objective. Through traversing China's innovative landscape, this paper also enlightens the field of management on key aspects of China's innovative past, present and future.
