Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of immediate performance outcomes on the relationship between dimensions of supply chain integration (SCI) and financial performance.
Design/methodology/approach
This study tests the proposed model linking dimensions of SCI, immediate performance outcomes and financial performance using structural equation modeling on a sample of Indian manufacturing companies.
Findings
The findings suggest that the relationship between dimensions of SCI and firm performance is fully mediated through the immediate performance outcomes.
Originality/value
This study deals with the potential benefits of SCI, especially in developing countries like India, where a little research has been done in this area. Also, this study provides support to practitioners that SCI is an effective way of improving both supply chain performance and financial performance.

Abstract
Purpose
This study analyzes the reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction among people with public health mitigation policies, particularly with focus on human values. Recent studies reveal that the citizenry of various nations reacted to government policy measures differently when asked if they are satisfied with government handling of COVID-19. Human values such as openness-to-change and conservation might influence the acceptance of pandemic mitigation measures.
Design/methodology/approach
A structural equation model (SEM) is proposed, which incorporates mitigation strategies and human value variables. National health survey data of the COVID-19 pandemic in Great Britain and Italy is used to test several hypotheses.
Findings
The model analysis suggests that prioritizing public health, monitoring and tracking people, border closures and restricting people’s movement played important roles in the satisfaction of government handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals with a high conservation value are more likely to have a higher probability of dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of COVID-19 pandemic. During a pandemic, the citizens are more willing to trade a good economy for public health. They are also more willing to sacrifice privacy in the government’s efforts to track the spread.
Originality/value
This is a unique study which combines human value variables and mitigation policies in determining acceptance of government policies among citizenry during national health crisis. A SEM modeling framework is presented to analyze empirically several hypotheses.

Modelling for age and retirement becomes essential in many situations where promotion is age‐based and retirement is on attaining a particular age. A step by step approach to modelling retirement and average age of population through system dynamics is presented. The deterministic situation, with fixed residence time, is presented first and, then, the system equations are modified to accommodate probabilistic age of individuals by normal distribution. The proposed model has been tested and a few policy alternatives are suggested.

Very little is known of the pattern of spread of quality initiatives and their implementation amongst various functional areas in manufacturing organisations. The knowledge of the actual pattern would have a number of managerial implications with regard to the future quality improvement policies. This paper explains the significance of even (or uneven) spread of quality initiatives amongst functional areas. Evidence is presented to establish that the actual spread, in fact, has been uneven across functional areas in manufacturing organisations – maximum spread in the production area and much less in the other functional areas. The paper discusses the future implications of the observed trends to corporate performance.

Abstract
The design of an effective inventory control system is difficult, particularly if the demand fluctuates widely and in a seasonal manner. Most traditional analytical models seem to be inadequate and over‐simplified. An alternative to established mathematical models is suggested and control policies for a specific industrial situation are presented. The case of paint containers for a large paint company is considered. Demand, which is highly seasonal, has been deseasonalised by a Census‐II package to produce a demand distribution pattern, used as an input to simulation exercises. Four policies have been tested and analysed. Simulation results show that the (r, Q) system with a variable ROP adjusted each month on three months′ moving average of seasonalities shows the best results.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study how knowledge management strategy (KMS), technology management strategy (TMS), and information management strategy (IMS) influence an organization’s performance.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors use manufacturing data and employ causal modeling, with structural equation modeling, which will enable managers to understand the interrelationships among the use of information, knowledge management, and technology strategy in manufacturing enterprises.
Findings
There are two major findings of the research: first, an organization’s financial performance (FINP) is directly dependent on its information management and TMSs, and second, KMSs indirectly influence FINP via mediation.
Practical implications
Managers should be aware of various roles that TMS, IMS, and KMS play on an organization’s performance. The model analysis provides a direction to decision makers in understanding various intricate relationships through which information, technology, and KMSs could impact corporate sustainability.
Originality/value
First, the authors present a specific approach to capture and model information-related strategies in a powerful decisions support system framework. Second, the modeling environment provides examination of non-linear relationships among latent variables, as well as examining additive, moderating, and mediating relations so that other modelers could replicate the experiment in other sectors or enterprises. Last, this work addresses one of the major problems in manufacturing research: the lack of empirical research in sustainability development. The paper shows empirically that both TMS and IMS impact organization’s performance directly and KMS does so indirectly.

Abstract
In the literature, numerous quality models or approaches are suggested for small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), but there is little or no evidence to support the success or otherwise of these models as they apply to SMEs. The validity of quality methods in SMEs is central to growing debate amongst SME owners/operators/managers, quality professionals, SME customers and SME stakeholders. This paper uses this debate and the lack of conclusive evidence on the application of quality methods in SMEs to provide a conceptual model. A number of dimensions (core, structural, fundamental, sustainability, integrative and external dimensions) of SMEs are integrated to form the conceptual model. Through this model, the validity of quality methods can be tested and meaningful interpretations of the application of quality methods can be used by all interest groups – such as SME owners/ operators/managers, quality professionals and other SME stakeholders.

Traditional business models are undergoing a process of redefinition following the drive to develop new business structures that support competition. The result of this has led to the development of virtual organizations, which are founded on alliance structures. In this paper a case study is used to describe the way in which a telecommunications organization and other retail electricity organizations initiated a strategic alliance, so that they could improve their market position, financial stability and customer base. A case study is used to describe the way in which a telecommunications organization explored how a strategic alliance with retail electricity organizations would be structured. Pre‐alliance activities and its impact on alliance formation, such as the design of an information systems framework, are presented and discussed. The experiences identified from the case study provide a learning opportunity for those organizations that are seeking to seize new business opportunities through strategic alliances.

Cellular manufacturing is the organisation of manufacturing equipment based on the requirements of the product or component. Transition to cellular manufacturing generally requires reorganisation of existing equipment. It is likely that the existing equipment alone is not suitable for a cellular layout. During the cell planning and design phase equipment investment analysis is important to identify equipment needs. Transition from job shop production to cellular production is detailed. Cell formation and cell evaluation techniques are provided to assist in equipment procurement decisions. In particular, a structured procedure and analytical tools are given to evaluate fully the cellular system to identify appropriate equipment and methods. A case example is provided to explain the procedure.
