Abstract

Purpose

The current investigation is concerned with the Soret effect along with chemical reaction and radiation on flow of an electrically conductive, viscous fluid through a perpendicular plate, which is porous with oscillatory suction. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of first-order temperature and chemical reaction and the transverse magnetic field characteristics. The closed form of solutions are obtained using the governing equations for concentration, energy and momentum. The perturbation technique was applied to find the result for the velocity field, temperature profiles and concentration distributions. Furthermore, the impact of various nondimensional parameters on fluid flow variables on the temperature field, velocity field and concentration dispersal was analyzed and the results were depicted graphically. Moreover, the skin friction and the rate of mass transfer (local Sherwood number) were analyzed using tables. In this work, an unsteady 2D flow of a laminar, viscid (Newtonian), electrically conducting fluid across a semi-infinite perpendicular permeable plate under motion in its plane (x-axis) embedded in a constant permeable structure was investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, an unstable 2D flow of a laminar, viscid (Newtonian), electrically conducting fluid across a semi-limitless perpendicular permeable plate under motion in its plane (x-axis) embedded in a constant permeable structure was investigated. The medium is considered to be under a transverse magnetic field with concentrated buoyancy effects. Furthermore, it is considered that no voltage is supplied, which indicates that there is no electrical field. The fluid properties are considered to be uniform. The concentration of the imparting species is considered as C′w at the plate; the concentration of the specimens away from the wall, C′8, is considered to be limitlessly less. The first-order chemical reaction is considered to be seen in the flow. Due to the semi-limitless plane surface considerations, the flow parameters are the functions of y′ and the time t′ only. The oscillatory suction velocity of the fluid at the plate normal to it is v′; initially, the plate relocates with the oscillatory velocity u′, in the direction of x that is in its plane. The pressure gradient is toward the x-axis.

Findings

The analytical solutions were obtained using the above analytical method for a few values of the governing parameters, such as the magnetic parameter (M), the permeability parameter (K), Schmidt number (Sc), chemical reaction parameter (Kr), Grashoff number for the concentration (Gm), Radiation parameter (N), Prandtl number (Pr), Chemical reaction parameter (Kr), Grashof number for heat transfer (Gr) and Heat source parameter (s). The influence of M, K, Sc, Kr, Gm, N, Pr, Kr, Gr and s on the fluid velocity, temperature and the concentration over the semi-infinite porous plate was obtained. Furthermore, the numerical computation was carried out using MATLAB.

Originality/value

In this chapter, the analysis of a free convective flow of a viscid compact, electrically conductive fluid was discussed during its flow through a plate in permeable condition with oscillatory suction with first-order temperature and chemical reaction and the transverse magnetic field. The problem formulation and the results were discussed. The following chapter explain the Soret effect of mass transfer and radiation with heat source on magnetohydrodynamics oscillatory viscoelastic fluid in a channel filled with porous medium.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develope the electromagnetic interference shielding materials with high performance. To develop advanced polymer-based electromagnetic interference shielding materials with rather high temperature stability, good processability and moderate mechanical properties, the authors chose the polyimide (PI) foam as matrix and ferriferrous oxide (Fe3O4) as fillers to prepare the composite foams with lightweight and rather good electromagnetic interference shielding performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Some polyimide nanocomposite foams with Fe3O4 as fillers have been prepared by in situ dispersion and foaming with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and isocyanate (PAPI) as raw materials and water as foaming agent. By varying the Fe3O4 contents, a series of PI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite foams with fine microstructures and high thermal stability were obtained. The structure and performances of nanocomposite foams were examined, and the effects of Fe3O4 on the microstructure and properties of composite foams were investigated.

Findings

This work demonstrates that PI/Fe3O4 foams could be fabricated by thermally treating the polyimide foam intermediates with Fe3O4 nanoparticles through a blending reaction of precursors. The final PI/Fe3O4 composite foams maintained the excellent thermal property and showed a super paramagnetic behaviour, which has a positive effect on the improvement of electromagnetic shielding performance.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, the effects of Fe3O4 on the performances of PI/Fe3O4 composite foam were reported. It provided an effective methodology for the preparation of polymer/Fe3O4 nanocomposite foams, which hold great promise towards the potential application in the areas of electromagnetic shielding materials.

Originality/value

A series of PI/Fe3O4 composite foams with different contents of Fe3O4 were prepared by blending reaction of the precursors. The effects of Fe3O4 on the structures and properties of PI/Fe3O4 composite foam were discussed in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

A leader who inspires, facilitates and leads people to outperform themselves and bring phenomenal changes on an individual and social canvas is recognized as a transformational leader (TL). TL focuses on innovative methods and processes to improve the efficiency of subordinates. Experts believe that transformational leadership management is more effective than pragmatic leadership. This study focuses on the traits of a TL. Mr. Dhirendra Kumar, Managing Director of Jharcraft, who set out on a mission to lead people to revive the lost art and craft in the state of Jharkhand, India. The case highlights how Kumar's leadership style aligns with the four components of transformational leadership suggested by Bass (1985), i.e. idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation and individual considerations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employs a qualitative approach to comprehend the theory of transformational leadership. First of all, an in-depth analysis of transformational leadership theory was conducted using secondary data. The findings of several researchers on the basis of their contribution to the development of transformational leadership theory were analyzed. Based on this, the Bass transformational theory framework was selected. Primary data were collected by conducting interviews with Mr. Dhirendra Kumar, Managing Director of Jharcraft.

Findings

Transformational leadership is a leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. TLs are generally energetic, enthusiastic and passionate. As per Bass's transformational leadership components, Kumar challenged the status quo and imbibed creativity and skill into local artisans. Artisans were imparted training by experts from the National Institute of Fashion and Technology and provided intellectual stimulation. Kumar offered support and encouragement to individual followers. In order to foster supportive relationships, Kumar articulated a clear vision to the followers. Kumar served as a role model for followers. Because followers trust and respect the leader, they emulate this individual and internalize the individual's ideals.

Research limitations/implications

This study only considered the traits portrayed by Dhirendra Kumar during Kumar's tenure as the Managing Director of Warcraft, and the data were collected at one single point in time. Future research may consider Kumar's entire service journey and study factors that influenced his role as a TL.

Practical implications

Students will be able to learn and understand how a TL can bring positive change at the grassroots level.

Social implications

This case focuses on how a TL's efforts led to the societal upliftment of poor people and made them capable.

Originality/value

Given the importance of transformational leadership in today's organizational context, this study builds a knowledge base to understand factors for transformational leadership and traits exhibited by TLs.
