Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of dipentaerythritol hexaacrylate (DPHA) and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate-modified silica nanoparticles (MSiO2) contents on the performances of the Disperse Red 1 (DR1)-grafted-silica/poly(acrylate) color hard coatings.

Design/methodology/approach

The organic dye DR1 was silylated by reaction with the coupling agent 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane in methyl ethyl ketone. The silylated-DR1 thus obtained was grafted on MSiO2 to form dye-grafted silica (GSiO2). This hybrid dye was then UV-cured with the cross-linking agent, DPHA, to yield color coatings. Thermal durability of the coatings was evaluated based on their CIE (international commission on illumination) chromaticity coordinates and UV/Vis transmittances.

Findings

The results indicated that GSiO2-coatings could tolerate thermal attack better than pristine DR1-coatings or dye-absorbed silica (DSiO2)-coatings because of the fact that DR1 was more finely dispersed in the polymer binder when covalently bonded to the silica particles. Under optimal conditions, coatings with very small change of saturation and hue after high-temperature treatments were obtainable. These coatings appeared transparent, had 3H-6H pencil hardness and adhered perfectly onto the poly(methyl methacrylate) substrates.

Practical implications

Dye-grafted color coatings may find applications such as color filter photoresists for displays, microelectronics, printed circuit boards, etc.

Originality/value

The performances of the coatings were evaluated in terms of mechanical strength, adherence to the substrate, transmittance and color stability against heat treatments, which have not been disclosed. Also, using a newly developed triangular composition diagram, suitable ranges for preparing useful color coatings were accessed. The present method deserves further research studies on green and blue dyes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate (1) how female blog users' perceived benefits (i.e. perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, community identification and perceived norm of reciprocity) influence their perceived social capital on fashion blogs, (2) the influence of structural social capital and cognitive social capital on users' relational social capital and (3) the influence of relational social capital on blog loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling was performed using 530 useable data collected through an online survey.

Findings

The result indicated that perceived usefulness and the norm of reciprocity led to the development of cognitive social capital, while community identification and the norm of reciprocity led to the development of structural social capital. Cognitive and structural social capital both led to the development relational social capital, which in turn influenced blog loyalty.

Originality/value

This study provides insights for a fashion brand marketing strategy that uses fashion blogs to target relevant consumers. It helps firms to understand the factors that lead people to embed their resources in a blog and to learn how the different perceived benefits impact blog users' contributions to the community.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study the mechanisms and conditions of users' intention to continue to use online health platforms from an information technology (IT) affordance perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

b This research proposes that a critical affordance effect on an online health platform, users' intention to continue the use of the platform, is affected by five platform affordances via two actualized affordances (i.e. perceived benefits (PBs) and online engagement (OE)). Perceived health threat moderates the effect generated by affordance actualization. A dataset involving 409 users from the “Ping An Health” platform was collected through an online survey and analyzed to validate the research hypotheses.

Findings

The data analysis results confirm that the proposed online health platform affordances affect users' PBs and OE, which influence users' intentions to continue using the platform. Perceived threats (perceived vulnerability (PVU) and perceived severity (PSE)) moderate the relationship between PBs and continuance intention (CI) and between OE and CI.

Practical implications

The research provides important recommendations for online health platform designers to develop IT affordances that can support users' needs for healthcare services.

Originality/value

Limited studies investigated why users continue participating in online diagnosis and treatment. This study provides a new perspective to expand the affordance framework by combining technology features and user health behavior. The study also emphasizes the importance of perceived threats in IT use.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper compares the characteristics of reverse logistics in the publishing industry among China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Design/methodology/approach

A multiple‐case approach in combination with EIQ (entry of order, items, and quantity) analysis is selected to allow analytical generalization of the findings.

Findings

The research findings show that the reverse logistics of Chinese publications is still in early stage and is not mature enough to be interconnected in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The reverse logistics cost in these areas is unlikely to be significantly reduced in the near future.

Practical implications

Instead of making effort to process returned goods, logistics firms or publishers may consider discarding the returned goods directly. The loss on material cost is far less than the manpower spent on processing. Also, publishers can sort returned goods in off‐peak season to save cost on reverse logistics.

Originality/value

This research provides the first empirical study by applying EIQ analysis to understand the challenges of reverse logistics in the publishing industry in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, which has been rarely discussed in the past.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how long a real estate investment trust (REIT) initial public offer (IPO) survives until a merger occurs, and to determine the impact of different firm characteristics that exist at the time of the IPO on that survival in the aftermarket period.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors apply an accelerated failure time (AFT) duration model to determine how long the IPO will survive until merger occurs.

Findings

The results indicate that the time from the IPO to an eventual merger increases with size, the age of the REIT at IPO, and the percentage of institutional ownership. In contrast, the authors find that the time until merger decreases with increased market performance prior to the time of the offering and with the number of additional IPOs occurring at the time of the IPO.

Practical implications

There is a growing body of research that suggests that IPOs might be motivated by subsequent mergers. An understanding of those characteristics that effect the time until a merger occurs these relationships will enable market participants and capital providers to make better decisions about proceeding with, or evaluating, a REIT IPO.

Originality/value

There is a significant body of research on IPOs in general; however, the findings of this research vary depending upon the industry being examined. Further, there are a limited number of papers on IPO aftermarket survival. This is the only paper on REIT IPO aftermarket survival.

Abstract

We develop a model to estimate salary-based premiums for pension benefit guarantees by simultaneously considering a stochastic interest rate and three practical pension plan termination conditions. We show the relationship among premium rates, a plan’s funding level, sponsoring firm’s capital position, early lapse, and a participant’s years of service. We also show how the regulatory intervention policy interacts with a plan’s funding level and a sponsor’s capital position and how it affects the pension insurance cost.

Abstract

Purpose

The current study investigated the effect of internal marketing practices, specifically the training and rewards system, on job satisfaction, affective commitment and employee turnover intention.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling analysis was conducted on a sample of 288 responses from employees working in different organizations and diverse industries in Morocco.

Findings

The findings revealed that internal marketing positively affected employee job satisfaction and affective commitment and negatively affected employee turnover intention.

Practical implications

The current investigation extends our understanding of the effects of internal marketing practices, especially training and rewards, on an emerging country context and contributes to the organizational behavior and management field. The results may be of interest to organizations and managers who should consider the importance of internal marketing in enhancing job satisfaction, affective commitment and decreasing employee turnover intention.

Originality/value

The current study is the first of its kind to investigate the impact of internal marketing practices on job satisfaction, affective commitment and employee turnover intention in Morocco.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to research attribute reduction and decision making by gray dual‐information, taking into account the attribute reduction of attribute decision unknown for the interval gray numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors obtain the attribute weights considering the consistency of experts’ judgment matrixes and the decision matrixes with gray information. They propose some experts’ attribute reduction ideas based on interval gray numbers of rough set. With the help of experts’ decision information, they consider attribute uncertainty ratio and attribute value ratio to reduce attribute. Finally, a numerical example shows its feasibility.

Some experts’ attribute reduction ideas are proposed based on interval gray numbers of rough set. With the help of experts’ decision information, attribute uncertainty ratio and attribute value ratio to reduce attribute can be considered.

Originality/value

Attribute reduction is keeping classified information systems under the same conditions and deleting redundant and irrelevant or unimportant attributes in order to solve the problem of decision making. This paper considers the attribute reduction based on gray dual‐information.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to use a new approach of performance evaluation, grey relation analysis (GRA), which is a concept borrowed from the study of industry and is increasingly applied to commerce. GRA is used to evaluate the relative performance of three of Australia's major banks The result of the study indicates that although the sample size is small and the distribution of data is unknown, GRA can still be successfully used in evaluating bank performance. In addition, this paper compares the GRA results with the financial statement analysis and shows that the same result can be obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between ethical leadership and group-level performance outcomes and show that group value congruence and group trust play pivotal mediating roles in the relationship between ethical leadership and work group performance outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

To examine the proposed model, survey data from 116 branches of a baked goods and beverages chain located in Northern Taiwan were analyzed.

Findings

The results revealed that ethical leadership was positively and significantly related to group in-role performance and group helping behavior; the relationship was fully mediated by group value congruence and group trust after controlling for idealized influence leadership.

Research limitations/implications

This study features a cross-sectional study design, thus limiting the accuracy of inferences about causality.

Practical implications

The results of the current study revealed that ethical leadership behaviors enhance group trust. Hence, these leadership behaviors could be among the best and most appropriate practices to be implemented in China and Taiwan.

Originality/value

The data suggested that ethical leadership was associated with not only individual-level behavior but also group-level performance. Furthermore, this paper also uncovered the mediation mechanism through which ethical leadership enhances group performance.
