Abstract
The archives of François Perroux deposited at IMEC bear witness to the fact that he has devoted, beyond his scientific production, great energy to the most material aspects of research: setting up and maintaining networks to publicize his work and that of other economists, either directly or through the institutes and the journals he headed; organize seminars and symposiums; take care of relations with colleagues and the press; create collections and journals; and so on.
In this chapter, we concentrate our attention on the archives relating to the management of the institutes, those attesting to the lines and themes of the producer’s research, and those concerning his important correspondence.
Thanks to the archives deposited at IMEC, it is possible to follow the development of the theoretical work of François Perroux by contextualizing it. They also show the itinerary of a Christian intellectual, whose attachment to social Catholicism constitutes a guiding thread and is reflected in all his activities. Finally, the archives illuminate his substantial role in the institutionalization of research in economics in the France of the twentieth century.

Abstract
Pierre Nelis joined a small group of artists working for a creative entrepreneur who had invented software to produce movies. He brought a great deal of marketing expertise to a team of technology creators, and it was this that ultimately allowed the firm to sell its software to movie industry leaders throughout the world. The firm – Softimage – was bought by Microsoft, which hired Pierre Nelis to oversee the integration process, and later to develop new communications products. Nelis has an outstanding ability to identify the elements needed by a firm to become more effective, and this led him to set up a one-of-a-kind external facilitation programme that went on to become a model for many business growth support organizations throughout the world, but especially in North America and Europe.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper deals with real‐time control of urban traffic with an emphasis on public transportation systems. The main objective is the regulation of traffic after the occurrence of disturbances. In a few words, the problem is to find a feasible schedule for some vehicles of some lines subject to certain constraints in order to design a decision support system (DSS) that detects, analyses and resolves disturbances.
Design/methodology/approach
This work is achieved in cooperation with a public transport company called SEMURVAL. It consists of developing a DSS for the future transportation network of Valenciennes (city in the north of France). As a consequence, regulators of traffic have to treat a new lot of information and it becomes necessary to assist them in order to keep up with demands and to come up to passengers' expectations and hopes.
Findings
From the case study finds that the solution proposed assures that arrival times of vehicles are more regular.
Originality/value
The solution proposed presents a good combination of scheduling decisions permitting the good regulation of traffic.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study theoretically the combined influence of journal misalignment and wear on the performance of a hole‐entry hybrid journal bearing system. The bearing is assumed to be operating in a turbulent regime.
Design/methodology/approach
The modified Reynolds equation based on Constantinescu lubrication theory has been solved by using finite element method together with orifice and capillary restrictors flow equations as a constrain together with appropriate boundary conditions.
Findings
It has been observed that for a symmetric hole‐entry journal bearing configuration the value of h¯min is more for the bearing compensated by orifice restrictor as compared to capillary restrictor when bearing operates in turbulent regime under worn/unworn conditions. From the point of view of stability threshold speed ω¯th, the reduction in the value of ω¯th for capillary compensated bearing is around −3.89 percent whereas for orifice compensated bearing it is −7.85 percent when misaligned worn bearing is operating in turbulent regime.
Originality/value
The present work is original of its kind, in case of misaligned hole‐entry worn journal bearing. The results are quite useful for the bearing designer.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to give the guidance for the design of the bearing.
Design/methodology/approach
The finite element method, the multi-body dynamics method, the finite difference method and the tribology are combined to analyze the lubrication.
Findings
The performance parameters of crankshaft-bearing system such as the misalignment, the oil filling ratio and the oil groove are also investigated. Misalignment causes the pressure to incline on one side and the pressure increases obviously. Filling ratio has great relationship with pressure distribution; the factors influencing the filling ratio are also analyzed. Different oil groove models are investigated, as it can provide the theory for oil groove design, and three factors above are always combined to influence the lubrication characteristics.
Originality/value
The optimization of bearing system is conducted by orthogonal test and neural network, unlike the linear optimization theory. Neural network uses the nonlinear theory to optimize crankshaft-bearing system.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper seeks to offer a survey of accounting publications and research in the French literature from 1950 to the end of the twentieth century.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology is that of literary research, review and critique.
Findings
Finds that over the period mentioned different aspects of accounting research have been examined in the literature – academic, social, matrix, events, historical. The leading researchers in these fields are covered in detail.
Originality/value
Succeeds in offering problems the most comprehensive survey to date of the French literature on accounting and related research during the period under review.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of university libraries in the European Research Area, focusing on collection, diffusion and the exploitation of knowledge.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper describes the potential of university libraries, the development of online libraries, repositories of scientific information and publication databases. It examines the role of university libraries in Poland in the process of knowledge transfer.
Findings
There has been an increase in the role of libraries as agents of information exchange within universities, together with a growth in the purchase of electronic publications. There has also been an apparent change in the perception of libraries as centres of testing and dissemination of new technologies.
Originality/value
The paper offers insights into why university libraries should become actively involved in the management of intellectual property and the transfer of knowledge.

To compare slip surface and moving band techniques for modelling movement in 3D with FEM.
Abstract
Purpose
To compare slip surface and moving band techniques for modelling movement in 3D with FEM.
Design/methodology/approach
The slip surface and moving band techniques are used to model the rotation of electrical machines in 3D with FEM. The proposed techniques are applied to a permanent magnet synchronous machine. The comparison is carried out at no‐load for the electromotive force (EMF) and the cogging torque. The torque is also compared for the short circuit case.
Findings
For both the locked‐step and moving band approaches there is no difficulty in establishing the scalar potential and potential vector formulations. However, if step displacement is not equal to the mesh step, the results can show numerical irregularities. Some improvements have been proposed in order to limit this problem.
Originality/value
The results of the EMF and the cogging torque are improved.

Abstract
A case study is given of International Distillers & Vintners (UK) Limited (IDV (UK)) and an assessment made of the viability of translating theory into practice in the real world – the importance of having a strategy, of strategic planning, and having a success factor as a key component of an organisation′s competitive advantage. Following the appointment of a new managing director at IDV (UK) in 1982, three goals were established: (1) to more than double profits within five years; (2) to increase return on capital employed by almost 50 per cent within five years; and (3) to be the outstanding wine and spirit company in the UK. A sound strategy was required to achieve these goals. The historic background of the organisation is given and the strategic position of IDV (UK) in relation to its competitors and market share is described. A review of the state of the market is given and possible areas for expansion discussed. The quality and pedigree of certain brands and the quality and strength of leadership are proposed as the success factors upon which IDV (UK) could build. Details are given of how the organisation built upon these factors to achieve strategic success; the lessons learned; and the level of achievement and success in the marketplace.
