Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on engaging young autistic people in the participatory design of the Autism & Uni online toolkit. The purpose of the toolkit is to provide autistic students with information and strategies for dealing with the challenges they may encounter when entering higher education. The study adds to existing research on participatory design by considering the specific needs and contributions of autistic people who are of average or higher intelligence, academically competent and generally articulate, a group that has received limited attention hitherto.
Design/methodology/approach
The research used a five-step design thinking approach and engaged multiple stakeholders at different points. The paper covers the whole process, paying particular attention to the final two steps of prototyping and testing. During three participatory design workshops, autistic people acted as co-designers and co-creators.
Findings
The workshops were effective in engaging participants in various design activities and rich discussions. Several assumptions about capabilities and preferences of autistic people were challenged. Design thinking proved a suitable framework for involving this group in the creation of solutions that serve their needs.
Research limitations/implications
Because of the low number of workshop participants (11), research results may lack generalisability. Also, the workshop format with its focus on group activities may discourage some autistic people to take part. Further work is needed to explore this and to confirm the reported findings.
Practical implications
The paper offers practical advice regarding how to involve autistic people in co-design activities.
Social implications
The research contributes to a strength-based view of autism, rather than one that focuses on deficits.
Originality/value
The paper provides new perspectives on the strengths of autistic people in participatory design settings, with a focus on those autistic people who are of average or higher intelligence and able to communicate effectively.

A distinction must be drawn between a dismissal on the one hand, and on the other a repudiation of a contract of employment as a result of a breach of a fundamental term of that contract. When such a repudiation has been accepted by the innocent party then a termination of employment takes place. Such termination does not constitute dismissal (see London v. Abstract
Purpose
This study examined whether life satisfaction varied among women who occupy different motherhood statuses, and if these variations were influenced by differences in women’s internalization of cultural motherhood norms. We distinguished among women as biological mothers, stepmothers, and “double mothers,” who were both biological and stepmothers. We also included two groups of women without children: voluntary childfree and involuntary childless women.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were drawn from the National Study of Fertility Barriers and analyzed using OLS regression.
Findings
Biological mothers reported greater life satisfaction than women in other motherhood statuses. Accounting for the internalization of motherhood norms, double mothers had significantly lower life satisfaction compared to biological mothers, but voluntary childfree women had significantly greater life satisfaction. More detailed analyses indicated that internalization of cultural norms only appears to influence the life satisfaction of women with biological children.
Research limitations/implications
The results suggest that it may not simply be motherhood that affects women’s well-being, but rather that women’s internalization of motherhood ideals, particularly when it corresponds with their motherhood status, significantly impacts well-being. Limitations of this study include small cell sizes for some categories of women where additional distinctions may have been useful, such as lesbian or adoptive mothers. Future work should incorporate diverse family forms and expand on the newly named category “double mothers.”
Originality/value
By providing a more nuanced approach to categorizing motherhood status, including identifying double mothers, stepmothers-only, and two groups of childless women, the study added detail that has been overlooked in previous work on well-being.

Patrick Pearse’s status in Ireland today oscillates between the iconic and kitsch: he was recently voted by readers of a newspaper as the person whom they would most like to see commemorated by a statue or monument in central Dublin (though this proposal has not met with universal approval even with that publication’s staff) and as one of the most important Irish heroes by readers of another paper. Abstract
Purpose
It is common for people to view dropping out of substance misuse treatment as an unsuccessful attempt at recovery. The existing literature emphasises that those who drop out of treatment do worse than those who complete their treatment programme. More recently, however, those who discharge early are faring better than ever before.
Design/methodology/approach
In total, 13 service users who discharged early from three residential therapeutic communities were interviewed over the phone to discuss life after treatment. Interview transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis and found four main themes evidencing that “unsuccessful” really can be successful.
Findings
The study unearthed significant findings in the area of motivation for continued recovery in that 85 per cent of the sample were actively accessing further substance misuse treatment after leaving the service early. Five participants who had entered treatment as opiate users were all abstaining from Class A drugs at the time of interview; indeed 100 per cent of the sample were opiate free. Furthermore, self-reported psychological health had improved following discharge by 78 per cent.
Practical implications
Recent changes in policy and treatment design within drug treatment services may explain such positive outcomes in that a more responsive programme allows people to gain skills and make changes in a shorter time frame.
Social implications
Indeed, improved early discharge procedures and increased links to aftercare and follow on treatment may have impacted on this finding.
Originality/value
This study therefore proposes the notion of “right dose of treatment” as opposed to “time in treatment” and highlights the importance of exit procedures and aftercare.
