Abstract

Purpose

A key concept within the wider practice of crisis informatics is situational awareness, which refers to the way that social media can be used to provide local, situation-specific information. This information may be used for disaster response communication and resilience building. The purpose of this study is to argue that, in this context, situational awareness relies on an overly literal interpretation of information sent via the micro-blogging service Twitter.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reviews relevant literature, including work that seeks to establish social media as a key tool in terms of crisis informatics. It discusses relevant theoretical debates and uses recent examples to interrogate these concepts.

Findings

The paper identifies several issues that complicate the interpretation and application of information from Twitter during crises. Not only can misinformation circulate during disaster events, the relationship between complex meaning-making processes, taking place both online and offline, is not yet well-understood. Locating digital data in physical time and space can better illuminate the dynamics of communication on Twitter.

Research limitations/implications

This is a theoretical discussion paper. It requires empirical work to question and to develop its theoretical findings.

Practical implications

The paper discusses implications for designing crisis informatics tools. It suggests that the cross-referencing of data may assist in the verification and interpretation of tweet content in regards to situational awareness.

Originality/value

This paper advances an important theoretical discussion with practical implications in an emergent field in crisis communication. It highlights the importance of focusing on temporal and spatial parameters for better evaluating situational awareness.

Abstract

Explores how the spread of connectivity and the introduction of new standards is driving the emergence of entirely new value constructs that deliver to multiple stakeholders. Examines the new economics of network growth and the associated “economics of increasing returns”. Looks at the dynamic trajectory of this function from the perspective of new business development at the various stages of the trajectory, and derives management implications for each stage in terms of appropriate competitive and market strategies, organizational structure and management practices. Applies the resulting framework to discuss specific implications for the business start‐up of Access Point, Philips’ new multimedia, voice technology‐based information and on‐line services venture that has at its core a disruptive technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the level of good aquaculture practice (GAqP) among aquaculture farmers; and to analyse the factors influence the level of practice and the importance of GAqP in increasing farmer’s income.

Design/methodology/approach

Primary data were obtained through a survey conducted on 216 aquaculture pond fish farmers. The descriptive study was employed to identify the profile of respondents and their level of GAqP practices. The structural equation modelling (SEM) method was applied to analyse the factors influence the level of GAqP practice, and the influence of GAqP on the total income of aquaculture farmers.

Findings

The results showed that the pond management by brackish water fish farmers is better than freshwater fish farmer, indicated by 77 per cent of them adopt GAqP at a level of 60 per cent and above, as compared to only 20 per cent by freshwater farmers. Physical and human assets were revealed to be most significant factors influence the practice of GAqP. The results also proved that GAqP was among the significant factor contributes to increasing in farmers’ household income; in addition to their other livelihood assets.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the very first study that employs SEM method to analyse the relationship between GAqP with livelihood asset and farmer’s income simultaneously in Malaysia. Furthermore, since the empirical studies related to GAqP is very few, the study will contribute to development of knowledge in the field of aquaculture.

Abstract

The central research laboratory of Philips Electrical Industries Pty. Ltd., a large Australian manufacturing organisation, is frequently required to act in a consultative capacity to solve problems directly related to production. In this case history, corrosion within the water‐jacketing of water‐cooled mercury diffusion pumps used in the final stages of valve production by an electronics concern was arrested after a systematic investigation of the contributory reactions.

Abstract

The most dramatic change in industrial America in this century has been the trend toward diversifying into unrelated businesses. This trend has redefined the way American firms do business. And this restructuring contradicts conventional notions of industrial stability and industry specialization. Not since multiple mergers created giant companies around the turn of the century—like U.S. Steel, American Tobacco, Du Pont, General Electric, International Harvester, International Paper, National Biscuit, U.S. Rubber and others—has restructuring on such a scale occurred.

Abstract

This paper investigates how the standardization on electronic data interchange (EDI) might affect B2B development in the real world of business. EDI technique has been evolved to become a very important technique with a lot of potential benefits. Its impacts on organizations both socially and economically are explored, together with a detailed discussion of the roles of XML in EDI.

Abstract

Although often regarded as mere bricks and mortar, real estate often plays an important role in supporting corporate growth and even survival. Parallel to the rapid growth and evolution of (multinational) corporations, real estate portfolios expanded. In order to manage these portfolios, corporations established special staff and supporting departments in order to take care of these assets. Based on the results of case studies, this paper provides an analysis. In addition to a mere historical overview the outcomes of the study also provide lessons for corporations currently facing a similar path of growth. This article builds on a previous contribution and presents an in‐depth analysis of the evolution of (corporate) real estate departments related to changes in the corporate setting. In addition to a mere historical overview the outcomes of this contribution provide lessons as well for today’s managers facing similar paths of growth.
