Abstract

Describes a recent study conducted by the British Library Document and Supply Centre (BLDSC) aimed at determining whether its data could provide a useful indicator to the science policy community, as a more forward looking supplement to citation analysis. Finds that patterns of document demand and use measures of information services can provide useful data on the information infrastructure of industrial research.

Abstract

The exponential growth of the World Wide Web in terms of sites and of users has created an environment in which the basic mechanisms of how information should be best represented and transmitted to end‐users must be re‐examined.

Abstract

The British Library Document Supply Centre has always accepted that part of its function is to carry out, or commission, research into the needs of its users and their patterns of working, the better to offer improved services. Two recent documents arise from this concern and report collaboration between the Document Supply Centre and the Centre for Exploitation of Science and Technology. The first, Information Flows into Industrial Research, by Phil Barden of BLDSC and Ben Good of CEST, 42 pp., ISBN 0–7123–2065–2, November 1989, £8, discusses the results of a survey of users' attitudes and behaviour, by questionnaire sent to BLDSC's 1,000 largest industrial users in the UK. The survey was to discover the importance of the Library's role in providing scientific and technological information through supplying, on request, photocopies from back issues of journals.

Abstract

Examines the way in which the ADONIS automated document delivery system was implemented at the British Library Supply Centre (BLDSC). Looks at the problems incurred during integration attempts; outlines a costing model devised to assess the costs of photocopying as opposed to the ADONIS method. Stresses the importance of international co‐operation in the success of any such trial.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate Bentley Motors Ltd winner of the Manufacturing Institute's 2007 Product Innovation Award for its composite technology and examine the need for UK manufacturing to become far more innovative.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper looks at Bentley Motors Ltd's manufacturing innovation and introduces some of the ideas presented at the UK/US Manufacturing Summit.

Findings

The paper finds that the UK/US Manufacturing Summit delegates were given some sobering realities about the need for UK manufacturing to become far more innovative, in all aspects, if they are too survive. In particular they were reminded of need to remember the basics of innovation – rather than looking for a silver bullet – and the importance of developing twenty‐first century managers.

Originality/value

This paper highlights the need to remember the basics of innovation and the importance of developing twenty‐first century managers.

Abstract

This paper summarises the development, current position and future proposed enhancement of the University of East Anglia (UEA)'s electronic document delivery service. The service has been developed in conjunction with the British Library Document Supply Centre (BLDSC) and began in September 1993. It now handles up to 20 documents a day, via the Library. It is hoped to transfer to desktop delivery, subject to copyright restrictions.

Abstract

Today an estimated 500,000 personal computers have been purchased by Americans who use them at home and in a variety of small business applications. (Note: We define a personal computer as a small, relatively inexpensive, microprocessor‐based device which can be taken out of its box, plugged in and begin working immediately, as opposed to large computers which must be permanently installed, and/or require professional programming. We exclude microprocessor‐based devices whose only function is limited to the playback of packaged games.) Many market research services believe that personal computer sales will continue to grow rapidly, perhaps as fast as a 50 percent annual growth rate for the next several years. The impact of this new interactive information technology coming into the possession of perhaps millions of people can only be guessed at at this early juncture. To us, as librarians, one of the more perceivable results of the growing wave of interest in personal computers has been the proliferation of literature addressed to the personal computer user.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how knowledge inflows and outflows interact to affect performance outcomes. Though previous studies have dealt with knowledge inflows and outflows, the quality and quantity characteristics of knowledge are often not taken into account, thus leaving a research gap with regards to the effect of their interactions on performance outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on Poisson regression analysis, this quantitative study fills the aforementioned research gaps by analyzing the ambidextrous configurations of knowledge flows from an ambidexterity perspective and examines their effects on two-phase performance (i.e. regular season and playoffs), using a longitudinal data set of National Basketball Association transactions from the 2003-2004 to 2014-2015 season.

Findings

The results suggest that the complementarity between knowledge inflows and outflows along the quality and quantity dimensions of knowledge, respectively, has a positive impact on two-phase performance, while the imbalance between knowledge inflows and outflows under the quality and quantity dimensions of knowledge, respectively, has a negative impact on playoffs performance (Phase 2). These findings suggest that organizations can balance knowledge inflows and outflows under a single quality or quantity dimension of knowledge. Furthermore, the interaction between the quantity of the inflows of knowledge and the quality of the outflows of knowledge and the interaction between the quality of the inflows of knowledge and the quantity of the outflows of knowledge are both positively related to two-phase performance. These findings suggest that organizations can balance knowledge inflows and outflows across quality and quantity dimensions of knowledge. Finally, the effects of the interaction between knowledge inflows and outflows on playoffs performance are greater than regular-season.

Practical implications

Organizations should leverage ambidexterity to manage/balance knowledge inflows and outflows across quality and quantity dimensions, further enhancing performance outcomes.

Originality/value

This study, first, provides new insights into knowledge flows by distinguishing between the quality and quantity of knowledge, the inflows and outflows of knowledge, constructing ambidextrous configurations of knowledge flows from an ambidexterity perspective. Second, it contributes to the relationship between knowledge flows and organizational performance by revealing how ambidextrous configurations of knowledge flows exert different effects on performance outcomes. Third, it adds to the literature of ambidexterity-performance relationships and expands it to the context of sports.
