Abstract
Purpose
Refurbishing houses is considered a key measure to improve the energy efficiency of the built environment. However, little is known about the implementation and outcome of housing renovation for energy upgrades in the Vietnamese practice. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the energy performance of the current housing stock in Vietnam and the potential to reduce energy use in households.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper is based on a survey with 153 respondents in three major climatic regions of Vietnam. The survey focusses on building characteristics, environmental performance, energy performance and refurbishment activities. Data collected from the survey were statistically analysed to give insight into the current performance of the housing stock and its energy saving potential.
Findings
This paper concludes that building design and construction, particularly the building envelope, have a significant influence on the occupants’ comfort. However, the energy consumption in houses is not statistically associated with building design and indoor environment. It is suggested that financial status and occupants’ behaviour currently have a strong influence on the household energy use. The survey also showed that refurbishment improves the housing performance, especially if improving the indoor environment was one of the drivers.
Originality/value
There are very few studies on energy use in households in Vietnam, especially with regards to actual energy consumption. This paper brings insights into the actual energy consumption and reveals the “performance gap” in Vietnamese housing stock.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of the current study is to examine how market orientation mediates the impact of business ties and cultural embeddedness of products on product innovation among Vietnamese artisan businesses.
Design/methodology/approach
The institutional logics perspective was applied to provide theoretical framework for hypotheses development and analysis of results. A sample of 214 artisan business owners in Northern Vietnam was created.
Findings
The findings of the current study revealed partial mediation effects of market orientation on the impact of business ties and cultural embeddedness of products on product innovation. On the one hand, the research findings showed that business ties have a direct positive impact on product while cultural embeddedness of products has a direct negative impact on product innovation. On the other hand, market orientation mediates the impacts of both business ties and cultural embeddedness on product innovation.
Research limitations/implications
This study did not consider the factors related to personal attributes (e.g. identity) as well as the broader context beyond the Northern Vietnam. Further, this study did not analyze how generational conflicts affect artisan innovation. That may limit the generalization of the research findings.
Practical implications
This paper offers recommendations for future research, government and managerial practices. Future studies can analyze how level of trust and the identity of business owners affect the extent to which firms innovate their products. Government can provide suitable support for the formation of business networks and culture-based groups to help artisan businesses address challenges facing their product innovation. Finally, artisan business owners can re-organize their business model to innovate product without encountering the resistance of cultural dimensions.
Originality/value
The application of the institutional logics helped further shed light on the impacts of business ties and cultural embeddedness on product innovation among artisan businesses. This field was often hidden in the existing literature under the cover of small businesses. The multilayered relationships between factors improved our understanding of organizational product innovation in a unique context of artisanship.

Purpose
This study aims to examine how disruptive and incremental innovations mediate the link between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and financial performance from a dynamic capability perspective. Moreover, this study uncovers the moderating effect of business type on the CSR–innovation relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors conduct a quantitative research design through surveying 536 managers of enterprises in Vietnam.
Findings
The findings show the crucial mediating effect of disruptive innovation on the CSR–financial performance link. The authors observe that the influence of CSR on incremental innovation is stronger for state-owned businesses.
Originality/value
These findings offer valuable insights for firms aiming to align their CSR strategies with financial objectives and enhance their dynamic capabilities to drive innovation in rapidly changing business environment.

Abstract
“The world needs science, science needs women” is the message given by UNESCO in the program for the development of women in science” (UNESCO, 2017). In Vietnam, women’s participation and achievements in scientific research is considered a great and important resource for industrialization and modernization. Even so, are there gender differences in scientific achievement in the social science research institutes in Vietnam? What factors influence the scientific achievement of female social researchers? The answers will be based on data from a 2017 survey with a sample of 756 researchers, of which 77.6% were female. The survey was conducted by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, a leading, ministry-level national center for the social sciences in Vietnam. This chapter analyzed the scientific achievements of researchers through their position as principal investigators of research projects and their publications, and factors that may impact this. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of factors that may affect the scientific achievement of researchers found that gender differences in academic achievement in the social sciences in Vietnam was still prevalent. Female researchers’ scientific achievements were lower than those of their male counterparts. The contribution to science of Vietnamese female researchers was limited by many different factors; the most important were the academic rank of the researchers and gender stereotype that considered housework the responsibility of women.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the management status quo of archaeological heritage in Vietnam seen in the case of Vuon Chuoi, a complex of Bronze Age sites located in Central Hanoi, which has been believed to be Hanoi’s first human settlement. Like other archaeological sites located in urban areas, this site has been under threat of destruction caused by land encroachment pressure. Although researchers have long waged a campaign for preservation, the dissensus among key stakeholders and the dispute over responsibility have left this site at the heart of an interminable polemic over legislation.
Design/methodology/approach
This research utilises a qualitative approach, and the primary data were collected throughout multiple field trips in 2019 and 2020. Several open-ended interviews were conducted with various state and nonstate actors involved in the Vuon Chuoi Complex’s management process. The discussion was also supported by analysing related legal documents retrieved from national archives and official online directories.
Findings
This paper dissects the current legislative and administrative framework applied in governing heritage in general and archaeological sites in Vietnam, in particular. The results indicate that existing flaws in Vietnam’s legal system are detectable, and the unsystematic organisation has led to deferment of the decision-making processes. Also, there is an apparent difference found in the attitude of the bodies in charge toward the treatment of listed and unlisted sites.
Originality/value
This research outlines that in the wake of urbanisation and industrialisation in Vietnam, a consensus among key stakeholders and an inclusive legal system are required to help preserve archaeological sites in urgent need of attention. Although several Vietnamese laws and regulations have been put into practice, they have shown critical barriers and gaps in conserving Vietnamese cultural heritage.

Purpose
Social commerce has brought about a significant transformation in consumer experience due to diverse factors. As a result, users often find themselves prone to impulsive buying behaviour when exposed to such an environment. Prior research was limited to demonstrating the expanding influence of celebrities on social media and the linkage between social engagement and impulse buying context. Furthermore, the impulse buying tendency of consumers on social media in the context of celebrity posts has yet to be validated. This paper aims to assess the influence of consumer awareness, consumer trust and observational learning on the latent state-trait (LST) theory regarding celebrity posts on impulse buying tendencies.
Design/methodology/approach
The empirical research builds on a sample survey involving 750 students from the “Big Four” economics universities in Hanoi. The proposed model was analysed using a partial least squares structural equation modelling technique.
Findings
The authors find that consumer trust and observational learning from celebrity’ posts positively affect impulse buying tendency. Yet celebrity influence awareness directly impacts trust in celebrity’ posts rather than directly impacting impulse buying tendency. Perceiving the importance of interactive and authentic posts by a celebrity in influencing consumers’ purchase behaviour on social media, this research offers valuable insights for stakeholders in the digital celebrity sphere of communication and marketing.

Originality/value
From a theoretical perspective, this expands the applicability of the LST theory in social commerce to promote impulse buying tendencies. Second, this contributes to the literature on the emerging phenomenon of social media celebrities, as existing literature does not clarify their influence on impulse buying behaviour. Third, this research applies the concept of observational learning in online shopping through key features of social media platforms, namely, likes, shares and comments, to investigate their influence on the impulse buying tendency of consumers. Concerning managerial implications, the authors propose practical recommendations for practitioners, particularly those involved or interested in the commercial services industry and social media marketing (namely, celebrities and partner companies).

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine the impact of bank managerial ability on the cost of loans using an extensive data set of US banks from 2001:Q1 to 2021:Q2.
Design/methodology/approach
First, the authors use multiple fixed-effects estimation to estimate the impact of managerial ability on bank loan pricing. In addition, the authors also perform different econometrics regression methods to test the robustness of the model including: Prais–Winsten regression, Newey–West regression and the Fama McBeth method, instrumental variable regression, propensity score matching method and quantile regression.
Findings
The results show that banks with higher managerial ability tend to provide loans with lower costs, and this effect is stronger at larger banks. In addition, research results from the quantile regression model show that the negative impact of managerial ability on the cost of loans will be stronger at banks with higher lending costs.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to investigate this relationship between managerial ability and bank loan pricing from the supply side. In addition, this paper examines the impact of bank managerial ability on the loan costs of banks of different sizes, as well as differs across the distribution of the dependent variable. Therefore, this paper is of particular interest to regulators and policymakers.

Purpose
Customer reviews on online platforms after their service experience not only provide useful information to help other customers make reasonable decisions about the hotel, but also provide a great opportunity for scholars to refresh the research directions on customer experience and satisfaction in tourism services. This paper aims to discover the key driver of international tourist satisfaction in the hospitality service and the way to effectively improve this factor, starting with the abundant online customer reviews.
Design/methodology/approach
A multi-perspective approach was used to compare the differences in service providers and service user’s interpretation of the factors that shape customer satisfaction. In addition to content analysis of nearly 2,500 online reviews of international tourists for 21 high-class hotels in Vietnam on Booking.com in 2019, the authors conducted in-depth interviews with the managers of 5-star hotels to show a comprehensive picture of customer satisfaction drivers, especially the staff factor.
Findings
The research results have clarified the main aspects of the staff – the most important service factor among the seven hotel service factors investigated from the customer’s perspective. On the other hand, the study also emphasized the gap between customers’ perception of the staff and the enterprise’s efforts and implementation of this factor. These findings allowed to identify aspects of staff that could be further improved to more effectively satisfy customers and provide a superior experience.
Research limitations/implications
The study suggested a potential research direction using a multi-perspective approach to better understand trends and shifts in customer experience and satisfaction. Further studies could overcome the limitation of the research scope of this paper by examining different destinations or expanding the exploration of both mid-range and budget hotels.
Practical implications
The findings offer implications for managers to improve tourist satisfaction by developing organizational culture and mindfulness-related training programs for employees.
Originality/value
This study has enriched the literature of tourism and hospitality services by providing empirical evidence on the exploitation of big data sources and deepening the insights into international tourist satisfaction with hotel services.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this exploratory study is to investigate the perceptions of key stakeholders in Vietnam on the impact on audit quality and independence after major reforms to audit.
Design/methodology/approach
Using new institutional sociology, this study seeks to explain how Vietnamese external auditors and accountants have responded to audit reforms and provides perceptions on how audit quality and independence may have been impacted. This study draws on semi-structured interviews conducted with 33 highly experienced participants, representing various stakeholder groups in Vietnam.
Findings
The findings indicate that after almost a decade since the full implementation of the Law of Independent Audit (2011) in Vietnam, the audit and assurance market in Vietnam is characterised by low quality audits, a lack of compliance with standards and auditor independence concerns, specifically amongst the smaller audit practitioners. Participants indicated that competition for new audit clients or retaining existing clients is a priority over improving audit quality and independence.
Originality/value
By examining a combination of different factors relating to audit quality and independence, the authors further demonstrate the impact of these factors in Vietnam, helping audit professionals and regulators to have a better and more meaningful understanding of that state of the audit profession. This study also considers audit concerns or issues arising because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam.

Abstract
Purpose
The research aimed to identify factors influencing customer loyalty in the use of mobile telecommunication services in Vietnam, focusing on two dimensions “attitudinal loyalty” and “behavioral loyalty.”
Design/methodology/approach
Based on survey data collected from 820 in two of Vietnam’s major cities users, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the data were processed using SPSS and AMOS software.
Findings
The study identified four factors affecting customer loyalty to mobile telecommunication services, with perceived service quality directly impacting both attitudinal and behavioral loyalty. Corporate image and perceived switching costs influenced attitudinal loyalty, while trust affected behavioral loyalty. Moreover, perceived service quality indirectly influenced attitudinal loyalty through corporate image and perceived switching costs.
Research limitations/implications
The study only focuses on a limited number of factors influencing mobile telecommunications service user loyalty, its restricted geographical sample from only Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and the simplification of perceived switching costs without considering their various components, such as psychological, financial and procedural costs, which could provide more comprehensive experimental and theoretical insights.
Practical implications
The study reveals that customer loyalty in Vietnam’s mobile telecommunications sector is linked to the relationship between attitude toward the service provider and continued usage behavior, categorizing customer groups into genuine loyalty, latent loyalty, feigned loyalty and disloyalty. It suggests that service providers should focus on improving service quality and cultivating a positive, transparent corporate image to bolster customer trust, foster stable relationships and remain competitive in the market.
Originality/value
The research model combines Oliver’s (1999) theory of loyalty with Aydin and Özer’s (2005) research model, focusing on perceived service quality, corporate image, trust and perceived switching costs, examining their relationships with both behavioral and attitudinal loyalty simultaneously.
