Abstract

UNIX is a word that is on everyone's lips, computer professionals and computer users alike. This is a personal view of the development of the UNIX operating system. The author has been working with UNIX as a computer professional since 1978. Since 1982 his work has been almost exclusively in Libraries and Information departments where he has seen the successful implementation of hundreds of library and information retrieval systems on computers with the UNIX operating system.

Abstract

In the Autumn of 1989, King Edward's Hospital Fund for London embarked on an ambitious project to develop a fully integrated information retrieval system for its two libraries and several specialist information exchanges accessible to all staff via the Fund's office automation network. In August 1990, it became the first European organisation to purchase the UNICORN collection management system to which it added the BRS/ SEARCH system for a complete full‐text retrieval and library management package. One year after installation, all modules are operational, a major collection inventory, weeding and barcoding project is nearly complete and the retrospective conversion of the library catalogues is on target with completion due in less than six months. The Fund, now one several of European UNICORN sites, recently hosted the first European UNICORN Users' Group.

Abstract

As the computing world in general gets more excited about Open Systems and UNIX, so these developments are reflected in the library housekeeping systems marketplace, a trend which was identified in VINE 76 (The turnkey systems marketplace: ten years on). There are now quite a number of systems on the market either running exclusively under UNIX or in addition to versions available for other operating systems. Table 1 provides a summary of such systems currently available in the UK, giving some suggested hardware platforms and alternative operating systems on which they run.

Abstract

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a unicorn as a fabulous (ie mythical) animal with horse's body and single straight horn. There is, however, nothing mythical about the Unicorn Collection Management System which is well established in the United States and is now being marketed in Europe. Unicorn is a fully integrated searching and library housekeeping system running under UNIX and incorporating BRS/SEARCH—the powerful information retrieval system—as its searching facility.

Abstract

The King's Fund Library, based in Camden, London, was the first UK library to install the UNICORN Collection Management System from SIRSI. This special library, which has an extensive collection of material on health and social care management, is open to the public, and serves a wide variety of users—NHS staff, students, management consultants, as well as King's Fund staff and members of the general public interested in health care management.

Abstract

Chemical warfare: ACS fires back at Dialog The American Chemical Society (ACS) has finally answered Dialog's $150 mil‐lion lawsuit against it with a countersuit and accusations that Dialog defrauded it of $10 million in royalties. ACS seeks an additional $30 million for punitive damages and asked the courts to insist on a formal audit of Dialog's payments.

Abstract

Purpose

The broad aim of this paper is to use Noddings' theory of ethical care to analyse mentors' caring experiences. More specifically, it aims to analyse how physical education (PE) mentors provide care, how they are cared for and how this impacts their role within the context of secondary PE initial teacher training (ITT).

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews were used to generate data from 17 secondary PE mentors within the same university ITT partnership in the north-west of England. Questions focused on the mentors' experiences of care and the impact this had on their wellbeing and professional practice. A process of thematic analysis was used to identify, analyse and report patterns in the data.

Findings

The participants reflected established definitions of mentoring by prioritising the aim of developing the associate teachers' (ATs) teaching rather than explicitly providing support for their wellbeing. This aim could be challenging for mentors who face personal and professional difficulties while supporting the training of an AT. Mentors frequently referred to the support of their departmental colleagues in overcoming these difficulties and the importance of developing interdependent caring relationships. Receiving care did not impede mentors from providing support for others; it heightened awareness and increased their desire to develop caring habits.

Originality/value

Teacher wellbeing has drawn greater attention in recent years and is increasingly prioritised in public policy. These findings highlight the value of mentor wellbeing and how caring professional relationships can mitigate the pressures associated with performativity and managing a demanding workload.
