Abstract

Purpose

Previous research has investigated how performance outcome impacts effort and subsequent goal pursuit. However, little is known about the incidental impact of goal (non)attainment on consumer preference via changes in regulatory focus. This paper aims to suggest that performance feedback has a direct impact on consumers’ regulatory focus, which in turn influences their attitudes and preferences toward future events. Additionally, the authors assess the extent to which emotions arising out of goal (non)attainment play a critical role in the process.

Design/methodology/approach

In a series of three experiments, this paper demonstrates that goal (non)attainment induces a specific regulatory focus, which in turn interacts with the frame of an upcoming advertisement to impact consumer preference.

Findings

This research demonstrates that previous goal (non)attainment interacts with the framing of an upcoming message (promotion vs prevention) and impacts consumer preference. The authors also find initial evidence for the role of emotions on the relationship between goal (non) attainment and preferences for regulatory-focused message frames.

Practical implications

The findings have important implications because they reveal consumers’ preferences after goal (non)attainment.

Originality/value

This study complements prior research by integrating two research streams (goal pursuit and regulatory focus) to address an open question of whether/how goal (non)attainment impacts message persuasiveness and consumer preference through changes in regulatory focus. Therefore, this research is intended to contribute to the literature by addressing the interacting effects of goal attainment and regulatory focus on consumer decisions and the role of emotions in this process.

Abstract

The office market in São Paulo has been in recession since the year 2000. This situation came up due to two main factors: [i] the very aggressive attitude of developers during the period that comprises the year 1999 until 2000. At that time there was a very strong perception among investors that a new expansion era for new office buildings in São Paulo was about to begin and, moreover the Brazilian economy had started its recovery; [ii] The intense retraction of the Brazilian economy along with the political transition in 2002, which was mainly caused by the deterioration of the expectations in relation to the economic policies that would be performed by the new government.The recovery of the economic activity in the office building market firstly depends on the macroeconomic growth in Brazil and within the São Paulo metropolitan area. On the other hand, the expansion of the activity in the office buildings sector relies not only on the developers’ expectations of how and when the current vacant units will be rented, but also on the potential risk‐return composition of new buildings to be developed in the next years. This paper describes the economic scenario in which investment decisions to build new office buildings for rent in our local market are made and we also simulated both the necessary period of time for investments in the São Paulo office market to recover attractiveness and the time interval for the increase in the occupation rate absorb the actual vacant spaces. These simulations have taken place based on projections for the Brazilian GNP increase and they showed that for an annual increment of 4.5%, in 3 years could be reached both, attractiveness for new investment and occupation of vacant areas. For a 2.0% annual growth, the absorption of vacant spaces will take 4 years from now and new investment would be attractive only in 2012. Besides, we discuss the market prices fluctuations on the inflexion point where the transition from one phase of the real estate cycle (recession‐non attractiveness) to another (recovery‐attractiveness) occurs.

Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to outline an integrating picture of the situation, representativeness, contradictions, and challenges that the treatment of diversity assumes in Brazilian society and in its organizations. The aim is to reply to the research question: “How are public policies and organizational practices constructing ways of inserting and valuing the diversity of Brazilians?” We provide a brief background of the changes in the global and Brazilian contexts over the last few decades and analyze the demographic data presented in the 2010 Census and in studies on diversity that were published in the main periodicals in the Administration area in Brazil, between 2000 and 2014 with regard to the segments most widely studied in the academic literature: Afro-descendants, homosexuals, the elderly, Indians, women, and people with a disability. The conclusion reached is that, in a short period of time, Brazil has made great strides in constructing the mechanisms and legal devices for recognizing the rights of its diverse population and that private companies are in the initial stages of introducing diversity programs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a research framework examining how hotel ratings can be affected by travel purposes (business vs leisure). It explores theoretical foundations, introduces hypotheses and outlines the methodology used in six studies to investigate connections between trip types, work-related factors, hotel ratings and other variables. The goal is to enhance understanding of factors influencing consumer hotel evaluations, with implications for hospitality industry service design and marketing strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a multi-method approach to investigate the impact of trip type (business vs leisure) on hotel ratings. The theoretical framework is rooted in perceptual frameworks that shape the evaluation of travel experiences. The research proposes and tests several hypotheses through six studies, using diverse data sources and methods for enhanced reliability.

Findings

This study shows that business travelers consistently give lower hotel ratings than leisure travelers, with work-related concerns playing a crucial role. Consumers’ perceived lack of hospitality during a business trip diminishes work-related concerns and hotel ratings. Similarly, low empathy from hotel workers leads to reduced work concerns and lower ratings. The research provides actionable insights for hotel management to enhance services for business and leisure travelers, emphasizing the importance of addressing work-related considerations to improve overall satisfaction.

Originality/value

This study uniquely explores the contrasting influences of business and leisure travel on hotel evaluations, focusing on how work-related concerns mediate these relationships. By employing a comprehensive approach that includes secondary data, experiments, and sentiment analysis, it uncovers how business travelers' stressors lead to lower hotel ratings compared to leisure travelers who prioritize relaxation. The research introduces novel insights into how factors like extended stays and staff empathy can mitigate these negative effects, offering actionable recommendations for hotel management. This work enriches the hospitality literature by providing a deeper understanding of how trip types impact guest satisfaction and proposes targeted strategies to enhance service quality for different traveler segments.

Objetivo

Objetivo-Este documento presenta un marco de investigación en el que se examina cómo las valoraciones de los hoteles pueden verse afectadas por el tipo de viaje (negocios vs. ocio). Explora los fundamentos teóricos, introduce hipótesis y esboza la metodología utilizada en seis estudios para investigar las conexiones entre los tipos de viaje, los factores relacionados con el trabajo, las valoraciones de los hoteles y otras variables. El objetivo es mejorar la comprensión de los factores que influyen en las evaluaciones hoteleras de los consumidores, con implicaciones para el diseño de servicios y las estrategias de marketing de la hostelería.

Diseño/metodología/enfoque

El estudio emplea un enfoque multimétodo para investigar el impacto del tipo de viaje (negocios vs. ocio) en las valoraciones de los hoteles. El marco teórico se fundamenta en los marcos de referencia sobre la percepción que conforman la evaluación de las experiencias de viaje. La investigación propone y prueba varias hipótesis a través de seis estudios, utilizando diversas fuentes de datos y métodos para mejorar la fiabilidad.

Resultados

Este estudio demuestra que los viajeros de negocios dan sistemáticamente valoraciones más bajas a los hoteles que los viajeros de ocio, y que las preocupaciones relacionadas con el trabajo desempeñan un papel crucial. La falta de hospitalidad percibida por los consumidores durante un viaje de negocios disminuye las preocupaciones relacionadas con el trabajo y las valoraciones de los hoteles. Del mismo modo, la escasa empatía de los trabajadores de los hoteles hace que disminuyan las preocupaciones laborales y las valoraciones. La investigación ofrece ideas prácticas para que la dirección de los hoteles mejore los servicios a los viajeros de negocios y de ocio, haciendo hincapié en la importancia de abordar las consideraciones relacionadas con el trabajo para mejorar la satisfacción general.

Originalidad/valor

La importancia de esta investigación reside en la diversidad metodológica y el amplio tamaño de la muestra, que aumentan la fiabilidad y generalizabilidad de los Resultados. El enfoque multiestudio explora de forma exhaustiva las preguntas de la investigación, proporcionando valiosas perspectivas para el mundo académico y la industria de la hostelería.

Abstract

This chapter, drawing on an anthropological perspective, explicates the process of tourism development and its implications for Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The concept of tourismization, influenced by Norbert Elias’s sociological perspective on the “civilizing process,” is introduced to illustrate how social changes and society-individual relationships within this community can be perceived as a set of configurations and articulations, which are mediated by tourism. It is suggested that tourisimization can be perceived as a process which dictates the rules and new customs to be followed by people influenced by new local configurations mediated by tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to verify if the characteristics of the board of directors (BD) affects the disclosure practices of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Two different population samples were used from the period 2008-2011: Brazilian listed companies and Spanish companies. It is observed that the size of the board positively affects CSR disclosure practices of the two groups of companies. The percentage of independent directors of the board members positively affects the disclosure practices of CSR in Spanish companies. The percentage of participants of the board women positively impacts the disclosure practices of CSR in Brazilian companies.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors worked with two different population samples: one, composed by the Brazilian listed companies in BM&FBOVESPA and other by Spanish companies listed on Madrid Stock Exchange. The selection of this period was due to the increase in the adoption of GRI guidelines from 2008 (Prado-Lorenzo et al., 2012). In addition, as Spanish companies disclose more CSR reports according to the GRI guidelines (Global Reporting Initiative, 2012), this is a suitable environment for the analysis.

Findings

Regarding the research question of this study, it was found that the profile of the board affects the disclosure practices of CSR of Brazilian and Spanish companies. The size of the board positively affects CSR disclosure practices of the two groups of companies. The percentage of independent directors of the board members positively affects the disclosure practices of CSR in Spanish companies. The percentage of participants of the board women positively impacts the disclosure practices of CSR in Brazilian companies.

Research limitations/implications

Both the BD of Spanish companies as the Brazilian still requires the participation of a greater number of women. It is important to remember that the variable that represents women in the board presented a positive impact on the dependent variables, and it is statistically significant, so it is possible to affirm that when a large number of women are on the Board, the company tends to disclose more standardized information about CSR practices. These results are in line to other empirical analysis that defend that women usually introduce more philanthropic worries (Ibrahim and Angelidis, 1991) and tend to provide higher information transparency, especially about sustainability issues (Barako and Brown, 2008; Prado-Lorenzo and García-Sánchez, 2010; Frías-Aceituno et al., 2012).

Practical implications

This research should benefit, in this sense, investors, managers and policymakers, civil society representatives and corporate managers themselves active in the two economies investigated.

Social implications

It should be noticed that both Brazil and Spain use to encourage joint research between researchers of Brazilian and Spanish universities, funding projects developed in partnership as Cooperation Programme signed in 2001 by the Ministries of Education in both countries. Thus, it is justified the choice of Spain for its comparative analysis due to the need for more field studies on this topic in both countries, and also that it has been promoted by their governments.

Originality/value

It is expected that the results of this research contribute to the identification of relevant factors in disclosure of corporate environmental policies and actions that may be useful in the decision-making process of various stakeholders. Such identification will also allow us to identify possible relationships between environmental initiatives, the profile of BD.

Abstract

Purpose

In 2014, the city of São Paulo began to implement the public policy “WiFi Livre SP.” This policy created the infrastructure for a WiFi network providing unrestricted internet connectivity in a 120 public squares, distributed in 5 geographical regions of the city (center, south, north, east, and west). In order to monitor the effectiveness of this public policy, a series of surveys were administered to users. The survey ascertained their views about the quality and frequency of the signal in the public squares.

Methodology/approach

To carry out analysis of this service a survey was used. The researchers camped out in the squares and flagged people down asking whether they could participate in the survey. Data was collected between August and October 2015, using an application for tablets developed by the research team.

Findings

The data showed that the networks functioned effectively and provided good service to the users. Another positive factor is the good signal evaluation in the public squares, since it was an initial concern of the project makers. Further, access to these networks made it possible for residents to use several platforms to communicate in an intensive fashion.

Social implications

The findings show that a connectivity policy should be geared toward promoting the right of all citizens to access the internet regardless of their ability to pay. Free and full access without any sacrifices of privacy should be guiding principles in policy implementation.

Abstract

Purpose

Prior research suggests that organizational alliances' contribution to innovation performance is conditional to absorptive capacity (AC). Instead of an antecedent of alliances, in this study, the authors conceptualize and evaluate AC as an outcome of alliance intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors tested their theoretical framework using multivariate statistical analysis on data collected from a survey applied to dedicated biotechnology firms (DBFs) from three countries: Brazil, Portugal and Spain.

Findings

First, the results show that whereas the high alliance intensity effect is positive and stronger on RAC, it is negative and weaker on PAC. Second, the alliance intensity effect on RAC is strengthened when firms have alliances only in their home country and the top manager does not have both academic and managerial experiences.

Practical implications

The authors’ study suggests as implications for DBFs: (1) firms should form alliances to develop AC, (2) firms should consider alliances for improving AC when top managers' expertise is not diverse, and (3) firms should consider only alliances with national partners as a differential for AC development.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature of dynamic capabilities, AC, alliances and innovation management by providing empirical validation for key contingencies surrounding the benefits of alliances as an antecedent of AC.
