Abstract

Implicit one‐step methods for the system of differential equations arising from a space discretisation of the semiconductor equations are considered. It is shown that mere spectral conditions like A‐stability or L‐stability do not give a reliable answer to the behaviour of the numerical solution. Rather, positivity arguments for the corresponding rational matrix functions play an important role.

Abstract

ONE MUST BEGIN with Dickens. A chapter by Christopher Hibbert in Charles Dickens, 1812–1870: centenary volume, edited by E. W. F. Tomlin, and The London of Charles Dickens, published by London Transport with aid from the Dickens Fellowship, make a similar study here superfluous; both are illustrated, the latter giving instructions for reaching surviving Dickensian buildings. Neither warns the reader of Dickens's conscious and unconscious imaginative distortion, considered in Humphrey House's The Dickens World. Dickens himself imagined Captain Cuttle hiding in Switzerland and Paul Dombey's wild waves saying ‘Paris’; ‘the association between the writing and the place of writing is so curiously strong in my mind.’ Author and character may be in two places at once. ‘I could not listen at my fireside, for five minutes to the outer noises, but it was borne into my ears that I was dead.’ (Our Mutual Friend)

Abstract

Purpose

This quantitative study seeks to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence scores of leaders in non‐profit health and human service agencies and profit businesses.

Design/methodology/approach

Director‐level leaders in the non‐profit (n=32) and profit (n=32) business arenas completed an online emotional intelligence self assessment (Bar‐On EQ‐i). Descriptive statistics were gathered and comparative analyses explored the differences between leaders in the two groups.

Findings

Results revealed significant differences between leaders in non‐profit and profit businesses in overall emotional intelligence, and in the particular competency areas of stress management and adaptability.

Originality/value

This paper identifies a difference in emotional intelligence levels of leaders based on career field.

Abstract

The contribution explores the methodology, strategies and activities of inter-institutional partnership among university, school, territory initiated by the Degree Courses in Primary Education Sciences of the University of L’Aquila. It illustrates the experiences of an active partnership undertaken at the five-year, single-cycle Degree Course after the reform introduced in Italy by the law 249 of September 2010 aimed at encouraging local development in a national and international perspective (Bologna Process, 1999). These activities focus on the need to strengthen the cultural and professional profile of future teachers through curricular and extracurricular activities involving the use of cultural heritage goods, tangible and intangible, of the territory. The aim is to renew methodological approaches to ‘science teaching’ through the use of appropriate technologies that make it possible to realize the process of teaching-learning adequate to provide the multi-lettered of the XXI Century with sets of skills and knowledge more and more updated. The contribution focuses, in particular, on the project titled ‘Museum in … click! – Cognitive processes and new technologies applied to archaeological heritage in museums for cultural fruition qualitatively appreciable’. This project involved University, Superintendence of Archaeological Heritage (SAH) of Abruzzo and local schools in a partnership where teachers and students from schools of the territory were busy in direct training to build educational proposals and multimedia products for their peers to improve the quality of use of cultural goods involved. The project, funded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism – Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo (MIBACT), provides a good example of practices within a partnership model that feeds a teaching system where the different skills of the stakeholders interact inside a common cultural area pursuing the same goals.

Abstract

Purpose

Signs of Safety (SoS) is a strengths-based approach to child protection casework that has been widely adopted in countries across the world. The purpose of this paper is to report on a study that aimed to synthesise the many evaluations of SoS that have been conducted to assess their strengths and limitations. The intention is to identify the aspects which should be explored further and those that remain unexamined to inform future evaluations.

Design/methodology/approach

The study collated and then examined many of the evaluations that are in the public domain as well as some of those that were conducted within agencies and have not been made publicly available.

Findings

At the present time (early 2019), the evidence base for SoS is limited. Independent, robust research needs to be undertaken over time to build on the studies that have been conducted. New research must be designed to fill gaps and be capable of producing the evidence required and it must address its own limitations.

Originality/value

This study is the most comprehensive contemporary review of the evaluations of SoS that have been conducted to the best of the authors’ knowledge.

Abstract

The Van Roosbroeck semiconductor device equations are put into useful analogy with the Arrhenius equations of combustion theory. Both, when written in appropriate variables, enjoy (suffer) exponential nonlinearities. Here, we present this analogy in rather simple terms. It is proposed that this analogy be further developed.

Abstract

Looks at the extent and consequences of sexual harassment in US schools. Points out that sexual harassment can occur at a young age and can happen to pupils of either gender. Reports a 1993 survey which indicates the level of sexual harassment taking place within US schools, the circumstances in which it happens, and the form that it takes. Underlines the conclusion that it is widespread and harmful to pupils. Sets out the impact that the harassment has on those being harassed, discussing how it affects self‐esteem and school work. Outlines the schools’ legal duties to act to prevent sexual harassment, pointing out that recent court decisions could mean that schools without effective policies are open to litigation. Briefly, suggests ways in which schools could tackle sexual harassment.
