Abstract

Abstract

This evening I want to talk about travel. You know about travel. Travel is something which is an adventure before you do it … a fond memory after you do it … and an ordeal when you do it. In any case, Americans have been traveling more—and lately their government has been enjoying it less.

Abstract

The economic benefits flowing from tourism have been largely ignored by the United States until recently. The pre‐occupation with the large, persistent annual balance‐of‐payments deficits has led American economists to examine all components of our international accounts. Tourism, it has been found, has been a major contributor to the outflow of dollars. To correct this imbalance both positive and negative proposals have been set forth. My contention is that the American economy has more to gain by attracting foreign visitors and their foreign exchange than by restricting foreign travel of American citizens. If the United States economy is to benefit from tourism promotion it can learn from the experience of other countries, such as Italy, which have successfully exploited their natural and historical wonders. A positive step taken by the United States has been the establishment of the United States Travel Service in 1961. This agency must be credited with the great strides already made in foreign tourism. In 1964, the United States welcomed over one million tourists from overseas for the first time.

This chapter explores the rise in genetic approaches to health disparities at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter explores the rise in genetic approaches to health disparities at the turn of the twenty-first century.

Methodology/approach

Analysis of public health policies, genome project records, ethnography of project leaders and leading genetic epidemiologists, and news coverage of international projects demonstrates how the study of health disparities and genetic causes of health simultaneously took hold just as the new field of genomics and matters of racial inequality became a global priority for biomedical science and public health.

Findings

As the U.S. federal government created policies to implement racial inclusion standards, international genome projects seized the study race, and diseases that exhibit disparities by race. Genomic leaders made health disparities research a central feature of their science. However, recent attempts to move toward analysis of gene-environment interactions in health and disease have proven insufficient in addressing sociological contributors to health disparities. In place of in-depth analyses of environmental causes, pharmacogenomics drugs, diagnostics, and inclusion in sequencing projects have become the frontline solutions to health disparities.

Originality/value

The chapter argues that genetic forms of medicalization and racialization have taken hold over science and public health around the world, thereby engendering a divestment from sociological approaches that do not align with the expansion of genomic science. The chapter thus contributes to critical discussions in the social and health sciences about the fundamental processes of medicalization, racialization, and geneticization in contemporary society.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to offer insights into the ways two computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) applications (QSR NVivo and Leximancer) can be used to analyze big, text-based, online data taken from consumer-to-consumer (C2C) social media communication.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used QSR NVivo and Leximancer, to explore 200 discussion threads containing 1,796 posts from forums on an online open community and an online brand community that involved online brand advocacy (OBA). The functionality, in particular, the strengths and weaknesses of both programs are discussed. Examples of the types of analyses each program can undertake and the visual output available are also presented.

Findings

This research found that, while both programs had strengths and weaknesses when working with big, text-based, online data, they complemented each other. Each contributed a different visual and evidence-based perspective; providing a more comprehensive and insightful view of the characteristics unique to OBA.

Research limitations/implications

Qualitative market researchers are offered insights into the advantages and disadvantages of using two different software packages for research projects involving big social media data. The “visual-first” analysis, obtained from both programs can help researchers make sense of such data, particularly in exploratory research.

Practical implications

The paper provides practical recommendations for analysts considering which programs to use when exploring big, text-based, online data.

Originality/value

This paper answered a call to action for further research and demonstration of analytical programs of big, online data from social media C2C communication and makes strong suggestions about the need to examine such data in a number of ways.

Abstract

Abstract

Women in Hong Kong do not yet enjoy full freedom from differential treatment in access to employment in the managerial field, judging by analysis of the content of nearly 2,000 recruitment advertisements. However, the pace of social change, and change in cultural norms concerning the roles of women will accelerate and evolve towards giving women a better deal. As more women become visible in the management sphere, expectations regarding their future roles in the corporate world are heightened, thus demanding access to all levels of the organisation. The integration of women will mean society adapting to women's life cycles, enabling them to become good mothers, wives, and successful managers.

Abstract

In the academic field of business management, several potential theories were established during the last decades to explain companies' decisions, organizational behavior, consumer patterns, and internationalization, among others. As a result, businesses and scholars were able to analyze and decide based on theoretical approaches to explain the current conditions of the market. Secondary research was conducted to collect more than 36 management theories. This chapter aims to develop the most famous theories related to business applied in the international field. The novelty of this chapter relies on the compilation of recognized previous research studies from the academic literature and evidence in international business.
