Abstract

Discusses the publication of mediocre quality children's literature. Presents the qualities inherent in classical children's literature. Examines the role and possible motives of the publishing industry for marketing “dumbed down” literature. Evaluates two popular titles. Suggests ways of playing a more active role in promoting high quality children's literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe and evaluate the EDI (electronic data interchange) X12 ordering and invoicing implementation at Sims Memorial Library. The paper will allow practitioners at academic libraries to understand the implementation process, the types of problems and resolutions encountered during the project and the time and potential cost-saving benefits of EDI X12 book acquisitions.

Design/methodology/approach

A team of LOUIS (the Louisiana Library Network consortium) consultants and a SirsiDynix manager helped librarians at Sims Library to implement EDI X12 ordering using Yankee Book Peddler (YBP)’s GobiExport Plus service. Vendor and report templates with mapping configurations were established, and tests were conducted until a successful outcome was achieved.

Findings

EDI X12 ordering and invoicing significantly streamlined the acquisitions workflow at Sims Memorial Library. A substantial amount of time is saved compared to the previous method of manually creating purchase orders and invoices.

Originality/value

The paper is a current case study, and the collaborative aspects and problems and resolutions encountered during the implementation offer original material. The paper will offer valuable practical information and provide a blueprint for those libraries seeking to adopt EDI book acquisitions.

Abstract

Purpose

To share the library school field experience paradigm that the authors developed after their successful participation as a supervisor and student.

Design/methodology/approach

A review of field experience literature is provided. The field experience paradigms and perspectives pertaining to the supervisor and the student are explained. The paradigm is suggested as a model for field experience participants and their supervisors.

Findings

The field experience paradigm for the supervisors elucidates the stages – planning, training, mentoring and evaluation. The paradigm for students explains the phases – awareness, interests, planning and participation.

Research limitations/implications

The focus of the field experience, from which the paradigm emanated, was to train and prepare the student for agricultural librarianship in an academic library. The application of the paradigm may vary for different situations.

Practical implications

The paradigm is expected to be useful for supervisors and students of field experience programs.

Originality/value

This paradigm stems from the participation of the authors as a field experience supervisor and student. The steps and methods the authors followed will help advance future field experience programs.

Abstract

Within the past 20 years hiking and backpacking have enjoyed rapid growth among Americans as favorite outdoor activities. From 1965 to 1977 the number of hikers almost tripled, from 9.9 million to 28.1 million, while national forest visitor days among hikers and mountaineers increased from 4 million in 1966 to 11 million in 1979. Accompanying this growth in interest has been a boom in books about the sport. These include both “how‐to‐do‐it” volumes and guides to specific geographical areas. Each year brings another spate of books, yet to this compiler's knowledge no bibliography of hiking guides to the Rocky Mountains, one of North America's premier outdoor regions, has yet been attempted. This bibliography is an effort to correct that situation.

Abstract

The University of Michigan owns one of the largest collections of ancient papyri. In 1991 a project was initiated to explore image capture of papyri in the Michigan collection with the use of electronic media (scanners), and to create a detailed online catalog with information relevant for all those involved in the study and research of the ancient Mediterranean world. In the summer of 1994, the Michigan papyrus collection underwent an extensive period of testing alternative media for image capture, as well as better, faster, and more efficient hardware and software. The collection created its own home page on the World Wide Web and made available sample images as a means of soliciting comments from the experts in the field of papyrology. The papyrus collection at Duke University has also launched a project similar to that envisioned by Michigan in 1991; and that project is now approaching completion. Further developments in the past two years have brought together the five largest papyrus collections in the United States to form a consortium known as the Advanced Papyrological Information System (APIS), which operates under the guidance of the American Society of Papyrologists (ASP).

Abstract

IT has been a year of mixed fortunes for the British aircraft industry typified by several irritating disappointments, a number of resounding technical successes and an overall feeling that the outlook for the future is bright. During the early part of the year the final stages of the regrouping of the industry took place, so that now there are in existence two main airframe groups, Hawker Siddeley and the British Aircraft Corporation; two main engine groups, Rolls‐Royce and Bristol Siddeley; a single helicopter group, Westland Aircraft, and a number of smaller individual companies such as Handley Page, Short Brothers and Harland, Scottish Aviation, Alvis and Boulton Paul Aircraft. A notable addition to the fraternity of the smaller firms has been the recent formation of British Executive and General Aviation which incorporates Auster Aircraft and F. G. Miles Ltd. with the financial backing of the Pressed Steel Company.

Abstract

The University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville (UTMC) Preston Medical Library (PML) and Health Information Center (HIC) has provided a novel contribution to increasing consumer health literacy and reducing health disparities in a unique variety of ways. UTMC librarians have used qualitative, quantitative, and practice-based methodology and research to demonstrate what a regional medical library working with internal and community partners can accomplish. At UTMC, there has been a focus on the value of health literacy for the patient, the clinician, and the health care system itself. In 1993, the UTMC PML began a consumer and patient health information service, which was the foundation for increasing consumer health literacy. In 2014, UTMC took a leading role in advancing consumer health literacy through the opening of the HIC, a patient- and family-focused library inside of UTMC. This chapter will focus on the PML’s history as a reliable resource in providing patients, family members, and the community with accurate and trustworthy health information, as well as the librarians’ role related to health literacy and health disparities through various initiatives and projects. Additionally, this chapter will highlight specific suggestions for libraries interested in starting similar initiatives, such as obtaining support from leadership, opportunities for funding, and how to address roadblocks.
