Abstract

Purpose

Businesses in Mexico, particularly small and mid-sized companies, are faced with numerous challenges: a lack of competition, difficulty in positioning and maintaining oneself in the market, irrational use of natural resources, and poverty in the environment in which they develop. In spite of these problems, many are able to succeed; however, there is limited knowledge about how these businesses could implement organizational changes that would positively impact their results.

Design/methodology/approach

Using dynamic capabilities theory and survey data obtained from pottery businesses in several artisan communities in Mexico through the application of face-to-face interviews, this paper analyzes the relationship between organizational capability for change (OCC) and economic and environmental performance.

Findings

This research proves that OCC positively and significantly impacts economic and environmental performance. Results contribute to the existing literature on OCC in the context of poverty.

Originality/value

This study offers empirical research that illustrates the relationship between OCC and the environmental and economic performance of pottery businesses. Additionally it contributes to a field of knowledge in progress; that is, OCC in contexts of subsistence where poverty is a constant issue. Artisans living in this context can also develop business capabilities that contribute to the permanence of their business in the market.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of the relationship between different types of organizational culture (hierarchical, clan or group, market or rational and adhocratic) and sustainability through three dimensions (economic, environmental and social) in ecotourism businesses in Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research 80 questionnaires were administered in the form of face-to-face interviews to ecotourism business owners'. Through a discriminant analysis and the theoretical support of the competing values framework (CVF), the prevailing types of culture were identified, and their influence was analysed through a regression analysis.

Findings

The results show that ecotourism businesses which are driven by hierarchical culture tend to have a greater focus on economic sustainability, while those businesses with a market or rational culture show a positive and significant influence on environmental sustainability. Likewise, businesses with adhocratic culture achieve sustainability holistically; however, the data reveal that clan or group culture is not associated with social sustainability.

Originality/value

This study offers empirical research that explains the relationship between organizational culture and sustainability. Additionally, it contributes to the study of environmental management issues in the ecotourism sector.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of classroom interdisciplinary diversity, a type of classroom diversity that has been under-examined by previous literature, on the formation of university students’ entrepreneurial intentions (EI).

Design/methodology/approach

Based on Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour and the interactionist model of creative behaviour by Woodman et al. (1993), this paper provides empirical evidence demonstrating that classroom interdisciplinary diversity is important in the formation of university students’ EI at early educational stages using a cross-sectional study design and survey data on first-year business school students and partial least squares analysis.

Findings

Classroom interdisciplinary diversity is important in the formation of university students’ EI through its positive impact on entrepreneurial perceived behavioural control (PBC) (self-efficacy), a key antecedent of EI.

Practical implications

The results have important implications for educational practice as well as for both public and private organisations willing to promote entrepreneurial activity, in particular, the positive effects of combining people with different profiles and career fields of interest on entrepreneurial PBC (self-efficacy).

Originality/value

This study contributes to the scant literature on early university experiences in entrepreneurship education and their influence on EI. It studies the impact of an under-examined dimension of diversity (classroom interdisciplinary diversity) on the formation of students’ EI.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify a useful taxonomy of frugal innovation (FI) applied to women-led family businesses in rural communities in Oaxaca, Mexico when confronted with disruptive situations such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, thus achieving a greater understanding of FI in this context to provide these businesses with strategies that allow them to face crises more effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was cross-sectional and quantitative. A scale was developed and applied to 160 family businesses run by women and located in four rural communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. A review of the literature from the period of 2018–2024 made it possible to identify the essential characteristics of FI.

Findings

Through an exploratory factorial analysis, four types of FIs were identified: new production and marketing models, new methods of operation, new financing methods and new organizational methods. Using a discriminant analysis to establish the functionality of the identified FIs, the authors found that shifting to new financing and organizational methods was more important for the survival of family businesses in times of crisis.

Originality/value

This study highlights the forms of FI that develop in small family businesses led by women; this is important for the survival of the family and the business. The research highlights innovation challenges and opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the global south.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine three dimensions of organisational change capacity (OCC) which have been proposed sequentially in the following order: OCC for change will affect process capacity for change and develop context capacity for change. Specifically, this study explores the moderating effects of coercive pressure.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the proposed hypotheses, this study conducted survey among middle-level leaders of the 11 top universities (autonomous higher education institutions – AHEIs) in Indonesia. This study used a sample of 92 respondents, deans 21 and vice deans 71 of 11 top Indonesian universities. To test data processing using the SmartPLS 3.0 tool.

Findings

The findings indicate that learning capacity for change is the starting point of OCC, and it influences process capacity and context capacity for change. Coercive pressure strengthens the relationship between learning capacity and context capacity for change. Further, context capacity for change determines organisational performance.

Originality/value

This study empirically examines the OCC construction mechanism as follows: learning capacity for change influences process capacity for change and then has an effect on the OCC for change, which ultimately affects organisational performance.
