Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to support the claim that socialism is ineffective and inefficient, and that this insight applies to socialized medicine, as well as all other forms of socialism.
Design/methodology/approach
The main method utilized in this paper is the application of basic supply and demand analysis, based on private property rights and profit considerations, to healthcare.
Findings
It is found that the application of these basic elements of economics to healthcare demonstrates that free enterprise can better attain the ends of healthcare than can socialism.
Research limitations/implications
Future research should focus on the anomaly that most people view socialism with great disdain, but not when it comes to health care. Why the logical disconnect?
Practical implications
The Soviet Union went through economic paroxysms in ridding itself of socialism. If the implications of this research are implemented, these can be avoided in our health care system.
Social implications
The impact on society of this research will be very beneficial; under free enterprise, costs will be lower, and quality of care higher. But public attitudes are at present very much in favor of socialized medicine. Hopefully, one of the benefits of the present paper will be to change this.
Originality/value
The value of the paper is that, in some small way, it will help attain greater health for the entire population.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of internationalization patterns among speciality food small to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs), investigating dimensions that may have a bearing on such patterns, using a series of case studies. In particular the investigation seeks to gain new insights about differences among companies in their internationalization patterns. These differences are examined in a framework which tries to relate three company‐level dimensions (market, technology and space) to internationalization patterns. The three dimensions are derived from the constructs developed by Storper and Salais, and Straete.
Design/methodology/approach
Two research questions (RQs) are formulated: Is there a relationship between the internationalization pace of speciality food SMEs and their technology, market, and space dimensions? Is there a relationship between the internationalization modes of speciality food SMEs and their technology, market, and space dimensions? A qualitative approach was adopted and cases from a broad dataset were used. The present research is an explorative research: it is intended to provide insights from which hypotheses might be developed.
Findings
This paper provides an empirical and conceptual contribution to the food internationalization debate. On the empirical side, it provides new evidence on speciality food internationalization, showing a rather diversified set of internationalization patterns, both in terms of pace and modes. On the conceptual side, it shows that the three dimensions of technology, market and space may help to enrich the comprehension of internationalization phenomena. While data collected seem not to provide insights from which hypotheses might be developed concerning RQ1, they seem on the contrary to provide useful insights concerning RQ2.
Research limitations/implications
Limitations of the research generally relate to the use of a small sample. Future research should strive to obtain larger samples, develop a set of relevant finer‐grained hypotheses and test those using appropriate statistical techniques
Practical implications
Identifying the impact that the three dimensions might have on internationalization patterns and vice versa may help to focus on these specific elements when companies make their internationalization decisions. On the same line, public policy agencies could benefit from these first results for better clustering companies targeting their internationalization supporting initiatives.
Originality/value
The findings add to the limited body of knowledge on the key influences on internationalization patterns within the food sector.

Abstract
Intergenerational confinement is an under-recognized, policy-driven issue which greatly impacts Indigenous and racialized peoples in countries with ongoing colonial legacies. Numerous policy solutions enacted over colonial history have exacerbated instead of mitigated this situation. This chapter advances an improved understanding of the impacts of carceral legacies, moving beyond the dominant focus of parental incarceration in the literature. Focusing on Indigenous peoples, multiple generations in families and communities have been subjected to changing methods of confinement and removal. Using critical policy analysis and interview research, this chapter interrogates these intergenerational impacts of carceral policy-making in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 124 people in the three case countries, this chapter centers perspectives of people who have been intergenerationally confined in carceral institutions. With a goal of transformation, it then explores an alternative orientation to policy-making that seeks to acknowledge, account for, and address the harmful direct and indirect ripple-effects of carceral strategies over generations.

Abstract
This paper explores whether workers share innovation returns and how the size of innovation returns is affected by market conditions. Using a panel data of Spanish manufacturing firms during the period from 1990 to 1993, we answer affirmatively to both questions. Product and process innovations both generate returns, but such returns are higher for process innovations. The size of innovation returns seems to be affected positively by demand growth, by product standardization, and by low product market concentration. The three empirical results are in agreement with the theoretical predictions, such as Schmoockler’s (1966) theory of demand‐pool innovation, the price‐elasticity of demand effects postulated by Kamien & Schwartz (1970), and the replacement effect suggested by Arrow (1962). At the time of generating returns, process innovations are more affected by market conditions than are other innovations.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite typically being regarded as “low tech”, the food manufacturing and technology sector is increasingly turning to open innovation practices involving collaboration with universities in order to innovate. Given the broad range of activities undertaken by this sector and the fact that it utilises analytical, synthetic and symbolic knowledge for innovation, it makes an interesting case study on the factors that influence the formation of university–industry (U–I) links. The paper aims to discuss this issue.
Design/methodology/approach
Using data from 249 collaborative projects that occurred between UK universities and food manufacturing and technology firms, the analysis utilises a logistic regression model based on a “synthetic counterfactual approach” to modelling the probability a collaborative link will be established with one university and not others.
Findings
The results suggest that organisational proximity, conceptualised through the presence of prior ties between actors, has the largest influence on the formation of U–I links. In addition, spatial and technological proximities between actors also have a positive influence on link formation. This result suggests that the specificity of knowledge of the food sector is important in the formation of these U–I links.
Research limitations/implications
The results suggest that the open innovation practices of food manufacturing and technology firms are like other sectors, even though their innovation practices are considered to be different. However, the limitations of the paper mean that these findings may be specific to firms in the food manufacturing and technology sector in the UK.
Originality/value
The food sector is under-represented in empirical studies on university collaboration; this paper addresses this and provides new insights into the formation of these links.

THE CATEGORICAL TABLES of the S.C. which are used entirely for the sub‐division of subjects have only been criticized for two reasons, and neither is very serious. It has been said that in many cases they make the notation too cumbrous and the numbers too long; and someone has objected to these tables for including subjects which are already in the main schedules. A lengthy symbol is almost inseparable from minute classification, because it is impossible without enormously increasing the main tables to provide for the many forms and standpoints which require expressing if an attempt is to be made to get right up to the specific subject. An example of enormous expansion will be found in the uncompleted Library of Congress Classification, in which no fewer than 7,079 numbers are used for music, a subject which in the S.C. is even more fully detailed in 332 numbers. For instance, there is no place in the Congressional scheme for the viol family of instruments, in connection with which there is a very large literature, so that, in spite of its great array of numbers, it appears that it is possible to miss important headings even in the most ambitious scheme. This inflation is caused by the constant repetition of forms, localities, and other categories, which in the S.C. are expressed once and for all in separate tables, by numbers which always mean the same thing. Thus:—
