Abstract

The main objective of this study is to investigate whether or not those techniques or instruments of motivation adopted by Nigerian managers in public sector organisations correspond or coincide with those techniques or instruments which the employee sees as instruments or techniques that motivated him. Research was carried out in two public sector organisations – the Ministry of Finance and the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation. The empirical findings show that there is a great divergence between the instruments adopted by managers and those that actually motivate the employee. This led to the conclusion that as long as this divergence continues, it is unlikely that Nigerian managers can easily come to grips with their managerial problems. It is, therefore, recommended that they should introduce appropriate motivational instruments at work to account for the preferences of the African industrial worker.

Abstract

There have been widespread speculations by observers, management practitioners and scholars that there has been a vandalisation of humanitarian rationalism in strategic organisations. By vandalisation of humanitarian rationalism, we mean the absolute and wanton disregard and abuse of established rules and regulations by the managers of Strategic Organisations and the control environment. The control environment (government) after establishing the necessary framework for the management of Strategic Organisations, most of the times, turns around to flout the same rules and regulations it had made to regulate social relations at work. This is done sometimes through irregular employment of staff, and at other times through unnecessary political interference from political office holders. This makes the whole idea of Quota System (QS) as an instrument of employment questionable. Quota System of employment sometimes serve as cynosure for the recruitment of unqualified persons from certain parts of the country. The incompetence of these individuals, to a large extent has led to the inability of Strategic Organisations to accomplish their mission. Strategic Organisations can be described as those organisations established by government to develop the necessary framework for socio‐ economic development in all sectors of the Nigerian economy. Khandwalla's (1986) definition of strategic organisations is that, they are:

Abstract

This chapter will highlight the process of engaging Black college men in leadership learning by centering their intersecting identities. We employed liberatory pedagogy through an anti-deficit achievement framework for course design and delivery. The chapter addresses the importance and implications of understanding how engaging with same-race and same-gendered peers in formal leadership curricula can support Black men in continuing to develop their leadership identity, capacity, and efficacy. This chapter will end with key course outcomes, pedagogical methods to center identity and build leadership capacity, and key takeaways for leadership educators developing courses that engage Black college men. This chapter concludes with recommendations for research, policy, and practice and offers reflection questions for educators, advisors, and mentors to consider when designing curricula that center on Black men and their leadership learning.

Abstract

ADVERSE WEATHER conditions greatly reduced the number of members attending the February Council especially those resident in parts east. Everyone who had made it seemed to take a while to warm to their task and passed the report of the Executive Co‐ordinating Committee like lambs. With mild interest they heard that the Secretary had recommended to the General Purposes Committee that the old Council Chamber should not after all, be divided into offices but instead be made into a joint members' and staff common room. ‘More modest extensions to the toilet accommodation’ (the imagination boggles!) are part of this reduced package which saves half the projected £40,000. For council meetings a platform with furniture suitable to the dignity of the association will be provided.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to longitudinally analyse the evolution of multiple narrative textual characteristics in the chairman’s statements of Guinness from 1948 to 1996, with the aim of studying impression management influences. It attempts to contribute insights on impression management over time.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper attempts to contribute to external accounting communication literature, by building on the socio-psychological tradition within the functionalist-behavioural transmission perspective. The paper analyses multiple textual characteristics (positive, negative, tentative, future and external references, length, numeric references and first person pronouns) over 49 years and their potential relationship to profitability. Other possible disclosure drivers are also controlled.

Findings

The findings show that Guinness consistently used qualitative textual characteristics with a self-serving bias, but did not use those with a more quantitative character. Continual profits achieved by the company, and the high corporate/personal reputation of the company/chairpersons, inter alia, may well explain limited evidence of impression management associated with quantitative textual characteristics. The context appears related to the evolution of the broad communication pattern.

Practical implications

Impression management is likely to be present in some form in corporate disclosures of most companies, not only those companies with losses. If successful, financial reporting quality may be undermined and capital misallocations may result. Companies with a high public exposure such as those with a high reputation or profitability may use impression management in a different way.

Originality/value

Studies analysing multiple textual characteristics in corporate narratives tend to focus on different companies in a single year, or in two consecutive years. This study analyses multiple textual characteristics over many consecutive years. It also gives an original historical perspective, by studying how impression management relates to its context, as demonstrated by a unique data set. In addition, by using the same company, the possibility that different corporate characteristics between companies will affect results is removed. Moreover, Guinness, a well-known international company, was somewhat unique as it achieved continual profits.

I REMEMBER one elderly librarian who insisted on keeping the works of obscure authors like Lermontov on the shelves, even when faced with the plain fact that no dates were ever stamped on the labels of the books in question. Whatever happened, the books stayed, year‐in, year‐out. Here, then, was a librarian of the old school, a guardian of culture, keeping to his post while the inner‐city housewives ran for the Mills and Boons on the returned‐books trolley like piranhas hot on the scent of human flesh. He didn't care: sitting at his desk, making careful notations on the backs of book‐cards, he could ignore the crowd and think about Lermontov.
