Abstract
In the March issue, John Wellens reviewed Roberts, White and Parker's study of THE CHARACTER‐TRAINING INDUSTRY. One of the statements in the book with which issue may be taken was that course organisers ‘proved rather ambivalent about having their schemes assessed by outsiders.’ In the first part of the following article, Peter Whitfield, a recent graduate from the MA course in Organisational Psychology at the University of Lancaster, presents some of the findings of just such an outside assessment of the Brathay Hall Month Course which was initiated at Brathay's request in 1973. The main findings of this specific assessment are at variance in many instances with the general conclusions drawn by the Roberts team, and a more detailed report is being prepared for publication elsewhere. In the second part, Chris Graham, Brathay's Development Tutor, reviews key issues determining current and future developments at the centre in the light of Peter Whitfield's work and in the context of Roberts, White and Parker's conclusions.

After the tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia in 1968, academics and writers considered by the regime to be anti‐Soviet were forced to seek manual jobs. When many opted for window cleaning, a joke had it that some academics could not find work because they had not published enough papers. It is a telling comment on the importance of research. Scholarly publishing of management research influences individual academic and institutional research funding as well as business practice.

Provides a case study featuring initiatives of an international academic publisher – MCB University Press – aimed at the promotion of quality and fitness for purpose in the articles it publishes. Considers “quality variables” such as accessibility, originality and meaningfulness to researchers and practitioners and looks at ways for publishers to work with authors to influence positively such variables. Notes, above all, that the key to success is in the relationship between the publisher and the author and highlights various ways in which MCB is seeking to develop that relationship.

Abstract
Purpose
To examine the state of logistics and supply chain management (SCM) research in the last five years from the standpoint of existing methodologies. The state of research is assessed by examining the research design, number of hypothesis testing, research methods, data analysis techniques, data sources, level of analysis and country of authors.
Design/methodology/approach
The review of SCM and logistics research is based on 442 papers published from 1999 to 2003 in the following three academic journals Journal of Business Logistics, International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management, and Supply Chain Management: An International Journal.
Findings
Major findings show that there is an increase in the direct observation methods like case studies. In general, the research is more interpretive in nature. Survey method is still holding the highest position. More advanced techniques are being used for data analysis in empirical studies and there has been an increase in hypothesis testing. The trend in survey research is moving from exploratory to model building and testing.
Research limitations/implications
The gaps identified in the review were: there are very few inter disciplinary studies; innovative application of secondary data is lacking, (c) research at inter organisation level is scanty; and the current state of research has failed to integrate all the firms in the value chain and treat them as a single entity.
Originality/value
The methodological review will provide increased understanding of the current state of research in the discipline.

This is a case study discussion drawn from scholarly publishers Emerald, formerly MCB University Press. It discusses the unusual “supply circle” phenomenon in scholarly publishing, where authors (suppliers) are often the same people as readers (customers). It addresses this from the standpoint of trying to measure and manage performance in an area where measures are highly subjective – where, like art, performance is typically judged on “I know what I like”. The paper suggests areas for further research, and points to some steps taken by the firm to make the intangible more tangible.
