Abstract

Purpose

Millimeter wave spectrum represents new opportunities to add capacity and faster speeds for next-generation services as fifth generation (5G) applications. In its Spectrum Frontiers proceeding, the Federal Communications Commision decided to focus on spectrum bands where the most spectrums are potentially available. A low profile antenna array with new decoupling structure is proposed and expected to resonate at higher frequency bands, i.e. millimeter wave frequencies, which are suitable for 5G applications.

Design/methodology/approach

The presented antenna contains artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) surface as decoupling structure. The proposed antenna array with novel AMC surface is operating at 29.1GHz and proven to be decoupling structure and capable of enhancing the isolation by reducing mutual coupling as 8.7dB between the array elements. It is evident that, and overall gain is improved as 10.1% by incorporating 1x2 Array with AMC Method. Mutual coupling between the elements of 1 × 2 antenna array is decreased by 39.12%.

Findings

The proposed structure is designed and simulated using HFSS software and the results are obtained in terms of return loss, gain, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) and mutual coupling. The S-Parameters of each stage of design is tabulated and compared with each other to prove the decoupling capability of AMC surface in antenna arrays.

Originality/value

The proposed structure is designed and simulated using HFSS software, and the results are obtained in terms of return loss, gain, VSWR and mutual coupling. The S-Parameters of each stage of design is tabulated and compared with each other to prove the decoupling capability of AMC surface in antenna arrays.

Abstract

Purpose

Planar periodic metallic arrays behave as artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) surfaces when placed on a grounded dielectric substrate, and they introduce a zero-degree reflection phase shift to incident waves. The antenna designers have new challenges while designing the AMC structure. The steps followed in designing the structure are as follows: 1) Designing the antenna, aimed to operate at millimetric wave frequencies, (2) Designing the AMC at desired frequencies, (3) Integrating the antenna design and AMC to resonate at millimetric wave frequencies and (4) Validate the output parameters of the antenna to be suitable for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Design/methodology/approach

The antenna is integrated with artificial material known as high impedance surface (HIS) for performance enhancement. A miniaturized, multiband, enhanced gain, AMC-integrated CPW-fed antenna is proposed and aimed to operate at millimetric wave frequencies, which is most suitable for IoT applications. The developed antenna operates at an extremely high range (30–300 GHz), i.e. from 40 to 60 GHz with the return loss values at lesser than −20 dB, and gain is greater than 10. The antenna is developed and simulated by using HFSS software.

Findings

An extensive research study has been carried out to develop a low profile, high gain and optimized antenna. The first two steps are separately designing the antenna and the AMC unit cell at the desired frequencies. The third step is finding the antenna or AMC radiating parts responsible for each resonant frequency by analysing the surface current distribution. CPW fed along with AMC integration has made the antenna feasible to achieve the extremely high frequency (EHF) range, i.e. 40–60 GHz, which is highly adoptable in IoT applications.

Originality/value

The result represented that the developed antenna is resonating at EHF rank with high gain and good imped matching when it is being compared with the previous models and has only CPW fed without having AMC structure integration. It is evident that the antenna which has only CPW fed has resonated at lower frequency than EHF range and justified output characteristics. But when it is embedded with the AMC structure, it resonates at the EHF range, which makes the antenna highly suitable for IoT applications, with more accuracy and high data rate possibility.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to analyze a special corporate banking product, the so-called cash-pool, which gained remarkable popularity in the recent years as firms try to centralize and manage their liquidity more efficiently.

Design/methodology/approach

A Monte Carlo simulation has been applied to assess the key benefits of the firms arising from the pooling of their cash holdings.

Findings

The main conclusion of the analysis is that the value of a cash-pool is higher in the case of firms with large, diverse and volatile cash flows having less access to the capital markets, especially if the partner bank is risky but offers a high interest rate spread at the same time. It is also shown that cash pooling is not the privilege of large multinational firms as the initial direct costs can be easily regained within a year even in the case of SMEs.

Originality/value

The novelty of this paper is the formalization of a valuation model. The literature emphasizes several benefits of cash pooling, such as interest rate savings, economy of scale and reduced cash flow volatility. The presented model focuses on the interest rate savings complemented with a new aspect: the reduced counterparty risk toward the bank.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to synthesize new terpolymers by the emulsion polymerization technique composed of acrylamide-based polyurethane monomers (TPM and MPM) with different vinyl acetate copolymer systems, such as vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate (VAc/BA), vinyl acetate/ethylhexyl acrylate (VAc/2-EHA) and vinyl acetate/vinyl ester of versatic acid (VAc/VEOVA 10) systems. The performance of the prepared terpolymers as binders in emulsion coatings and textile industries was investigated and compared with the analogous commercial ones.

Design/methodology/approach

New waterborne polyurethane-vinyl ester-vinyl acetate terpolymers with high solid content and nano-scale emulsions have been successfully synthesized in two steps. The polyurethane oligomers were prepared by the prepolymer method as the first step. The second step involved polymerization with different vinyl monomers. The synthesized terpolymers were characterized using FTIR, scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, minimum film forming temperature and particle size analyzer methods.

Findings

The synthesized emulsion terpolymers have shown small particle sizes averaged of 70 nm and a narrow distribution range, along with good mechanical, thermal and chemical stabilities. The surface coating layers of the terpolymers also have some important in terms of smoothness, clarity and binding ability in water-based coating for up to 4425 scrub cycles at 30 GU. Further, a high potential application textile printing was achieved at high solid content of 47–50%.

Originality/value

The effects of different isocyanates and vinyl monomers on the properties of obtained emulsion coatings have been studied. The improvement consequences of the coating evaluation of the waterborne binders for emulsion paints have been described. The properties of polyester/cotton fabric print pigment printing of textiles appear to be most promising enhancements by using the prepared nanocomposites of PU-co-vinyl acetate-co-vinyl ester as waterborne binders. So that the prepared emulsions have the potential to replace solvent-based coatings as waterborne binders for both emulsion coating and textile printing applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to the continuous and rapid evolution of telecommunication equipment, the demand for more efficient and noise-robust detection of dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signals is most significant.

Design/methodology/approach

A novel machine learning-based approach to detect DTMF tones affected by noise, frequency and time variations by employing the k-nearest neighbour (KNN) algorithm is proposed. The features required for training the proposed KNN classifier are extracted using Goertzel's algorithm that estimates the absolute discrete Fourier transform (DFT) coefficient values for the fundamental DTMF frequencies with or without considering their second harmonic frequencies. The proposed KNN classifier model is configured in four different manners which differ in being trained with or without augmented data, as well as, with or without the inclusion of second harmonic frequency DFT coefficient values as features.

Findings

It is found that the model which is trained using the augmented data set and additionally includes the absolute DFT values of the second harmonic frequency values for the eight fundamental DTMF frequencies as the features, achieved the best performance with a macro classification F1 score of 0.980835, a five-fold stratified cross-validation accuracy of 98.47% and test data set detection accuracy of 98.1053%.

Originality/value

The generated DTMF signal has been classified and detected using the proposed KNN classifier which utilizes the DFT coefficient along with second harmonic frequencies for better classification. Additionally, the proposed KNN classifier has been compared with existing models to ascertain its superiority and proclaim its state-of-the-art performance.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable development goals (SDGs) recognize the importance and interrelation between health and migration. Women migration and health is well researched, yet less attention is paid to their healthcare utilization, especially with regard to overall health and well-being. This paper aims to highlight the gap in the existing literature on health care utilization by women migrants.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA guideline. For the review, the literature was taken from three electronic databases, which were Springer Link, Taylor and Francis and PubMed. From a total of 1,575 studies, seven studies cleared the eligibility screening.

Findings

Of seven studies, five were found to focus on the sexual and reproductive health of the women migrants than their general health and well-being, and less attention is paid to health promotion and illness prevention beyond reproductive and sexual health. While, studies on general health have focused on the influence of health status on health care utilization and the influence of health insurance in health care utilization. The review has revealed the disparities faced by migrant women in different countries while seeking health care.

Originality/value

Studies on women migration and health care utilization have largely focused on the reproductive and sexual health needs of women, and this overemphasis often undermines their accessibility and affordability to overall health and well-being. Therefore, the present study has moved away from the concept of sexual and reproductive health tot that of overall health and well-being of women migrants.

Abstract

Purpose

Underreporting of new tuberculosis (TB) cases is one of the main problems in TB control, particularly in countries with high incidence and dominating role of a private sector in TB cases diagnosing. The purpose of this paper was to explore behavioral determinants of underreporting of new TB cases among private sector physicians in Iran.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a population-based, cross-sectional study of physicians working in private clinics. The data collection tool was designed using the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The authors used structural equation models with maximum likelihood estimation to examine attitude toward the notification behavior.

Findings

Of 519 physicians, 433 physicians completed the questionnaire. Attitude toward notification had the highest score (mean score = 87.65; sd = 6.79; range: 0–100). The effect of perceived behavioral controls on the notification behavior ((β^) = 0.13; CI: 0.01–0.25) was stronger than the total effect of attitude ((β^) = 0.06; CI: 0.00–0.12) and subjective norms ((β^) = 0.01; CI: −0.00–0.03) on the behavior. However, the attitude was the main predictor of intention and justified 46% of the intention variance. Intention had a significant effect on the behavior ((ß^) = 0.09; CI: 0.1–0.16).

Practical implications

Considering stronger effect of perceived behavioral control on the behavior, interventions aiming at facilitating notification process would be more effective than those aiming at changing the attitude or enhancing intention among physicians.

Originality/value

To the best of our knowledge, no other study previously explored determinants of underreporting from the behavioral and cognitive perspective. Specifically, the authors explored the role of the TPB constructs in predicting intention to notify new TB cases.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of surface texture with roughness orientation considered on tribological properties under a mixed lubrication state numerically and experimentally.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the average Reynolds equation and asperity contact model, the impacts of surface texture parameters and roughness orientation on lubrication properties have been calculated using finite difference method. Tin–bronze samples with various prescribed surface texture geometric parameters and roughness orientation were fabricated by laser surface texturing technique, and the tribology performance of the textured surface was studied experimentally.

Findings

The effects of surface geometric parameters and roughness orientation parameters have been discerned. The experimental observations are in good agreement with the numerical prediction, which suggests that the numerical scheme adopted in this work is suitable in capturing the surface texture and roughness effect under mixed lubrication state.

Originality/value

By meticulously controlling the surface roughness and surface texture geometric characteristics based on the laser surface texturing process, samples with prescribed surface texture parameters and roughness orientation consistent with that in theoretical studies were fabricated and the theoretical model and results were verified experimentally.
