Case overview

PN Rao Fine Suits, famously known as the “best tailors” for men's suits and groom wear, started with their first shop in 1923 as a small business of a tailoring shop catering to the needs of the British ladies in Bangalore, India, and by 2013, had four showrooms spread across Bangalore and Chennai, with an annual turnover of INR360 million. Over the years, the patrons of PN Rao have grown not only in Bangalore but across the globe, from countries such as the USA, the UK, Germany, Japan, Denmark, Sweden and The Netherlands. The PN group had three business arms: the PN Rao showrooms, Rupasi and PN Rao Creations. This family business has survived nine decades in business, with the third generation of family now actively involved in the operations and expansion of the business. Chandramohan Pishe and Machender Pishe, the second-generation brothers in the business, believe in a conservative growth path for their brand, compared to the third-generation cousins, Naveen Pishe and Ketan Pishe. Naveen and Ketan are aware of the market opportunities and the competition and often look for the differentiator that their brand can offer. They are very enthusiastic about their future expansion plans and would like to open 100 showrooms by 2023, their centennial year. The market indicators are favourable and, if leveraged strategically, do offer opportunities to fulfil their expansion plans. Naveen and Ketan firmly believe in the need of instituting a family constitution as they move forward with their expansion plans. The second generation is not very confident of this idea, however, as they believe the family values to be strong enough to continue in the same fashion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the combined effects of thermal radiation and activation energy with a chemical reaction on the quadratic convective flow of a micropolar fluid over an inclined plate. Convective thermal boundary condition and suction/injection effects are considered at the surface of an inclined plate.

Design/methodology/approach

The convection along with nonlinear Boussinesq approximation (i.e. quadratic convection or nonlinear convection) and usual boundary layer assumptions is employed in the mathematical formulation. Highly coupled nonlinear governing equations are tackled by a combined local non-similarity and successive linearization techniques.

Findings

The behavior of various pertinent parameters on the fluid flow characteristics is conferred through graphs and it reveals that the qualitative behaviors of velocity, temperature, skin friction and heat transfer rates of a micropolar fluid are similar for Biot number and radiation parameters. The suction/injection and activation energy parameters increase the concentration of the micropolar fluid within the boundary layer, while the chemical reaction parameter reduces the concentration in the same region. Further, this quadratic convection shows a strong influence on the fluid flow characteristics and then the impact of pertinent parameters is more prominent on the physical quantities, compared therewith results of the linear convection.

Practical implications

This kind of investigation is useful in the mechanism of combustion, aerosol technology, high-temperature polymeric mixtures and solar collectors which are operated at moderate to very high temperatures.

Originality/value

This attempt is a unique contribution to the establishment of both micropolar fluid and activation energy. This kind of study even in the absence of quadratic convection is not yet noted.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the various developments taking place in the field of gas sensors made from polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposites, which leads to the development of high-performance electrical and gas sensing materials operating at room temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

PANI/ferrite nanocomposites exhibit good electrical properties with lower dielectric losses. There are numerous reports on PANI and ferrite nanomaterial-based gas sensors which have good sensing response, feasible to operate at room temperature, requires less power and cost-effective.

Findings

This paper provides an overview of electrical and gas sensing properties of PANI/ferrite nanocomposites having improved selectivity, long-term stability and other sensing performance of sensors at room temperature.

Originality/value

The main purpose of this review paper is to focus on PANI/ferrite nanocomposite-based gas sensors operating at room temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a virtual forward-buying model that allows for forward buying but reduces the channel cost with no major behavioral change on the part of manufacturers and retailers.

Design/methodology/approach

Using simulations, the authors compare the proposed virtual forward-buying model with the traditional forward-buying and everyday-low-price approaches.

Findings

The authors find that the proposed model leads to lower overall channel costs that are shared equitably between both the manufacturer and the retailer.

Research limitations/implications

No primary or secondary is used, a situation that is usually very difficult to find in this area.

Practical implications

The paper presents a new method to improve trade promotion efficiencies that does not require a drastic change of habits for either the manufacturer or the retailer; allows the practice of forward buying to continue; and leads to channel cost reductions for both parties.

Originality/value

The paper presents research in an area that is under-researched due to lack of data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to assess sand-bentonite liners (SBL) which could be used as hydraulic barriers with a controllable quality, relatively low cost and easy operation in solid waste landfills.

Design/methodology/approach

These barriers have been used successfully in various applications and have attracted much attention in a short period of time. The only precautionary use of SBLs is related to the change of their hydraulic properties in high alkaline chemical environments. The main reason for this phenomenon is the presence of high ion exchange minerals in bentonite. By exposure to these environments, it is also laid open to degradation of the montmorillonite microstructure leads to change in hydraulic behavior. Three different compounds were used for laboratory-scale SBL, and diffusion was considered as the dominant mechanism of contamination transmission in these liners. Chlorine ion has been used as pollutant, and its diffusion coefficient was determined in the tested SBLs.

Findings

The sample’s diffusion coefficient for the first experiment containing 3% bentonite and 97% Semnan sand were 2.5 × 10^(−9) (m^2/s) and 2.44 × 10 ^(−9) (m^2/s), respectively. Similarly, for two samples with 6% bentonite and 94% Semnan sand, this parameter was equal to 2.17 × 10 ^(−9) (m^2/s) and 2.22 × 10 ^(−9) (m^2/s) and for two samples with 3% agglacial clay, 12% bentonite and 85% Semnan sand was 5.55 × 10 ^(−10) (m^2/s) and 6.11 × 10 ^(−10) (m^2/s). These values correspond to the range reported in previous studies. Also, it was observed that with comparing the diffusion coefficients of test, it was concluded that with increasing bentonite, the molecular diffusion decreases significantly.

Originality/value

In this study, three laboratory samples with different percentages of bentonite, clay and sand were considered and the results obtained from the laboratory were compared with the results obtained from numerical modeling.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the effects of inulin (3 per cent), chitosan (1 per cent) and carrageenan (0.5 per cent) addition on the physico-chemical, sensory and textural attributes of restructured goat meat products. Health conscious consumers are much more interested in product with added health benefit. Keeping this in mind, this study was undertaken to find out effective ingredient for low fat restructured goat meat product.

Design/methodology/approach

Formulation for restructured goat meat blocks was optimized and four different formulation containing different ingredients, namely, control, inulin (3 per cent), chitosan (1 per cent) and carrageenan (0.5 per cent), were used to find out best ingredient for healthier goat meat product and various physicochemical and sensory properties of the product were evaluated.

Findings

Results showed that addition of carrageenan improved (p < 0.01) the product yield (86.0 per cent) significantly. The proximate composition, expressible water and water activity were similar. The moisture retention percentage was significantly (p < 0.01) reduced (86.0 per cent) due to addition of inulin. Carrageenan significantly (p < 0.05) increased the lightness (42.4) and yellowness (10) values. Significantly (p < 0.05) lower shear force values were observed in inulin (0.5) and chitosan (0.4) containing samples than control (0.7 kg/1.5 cm2). Hardness values were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in restructured product containing chitosan (56.1 N/cm2) and carrageenan (59.4 N/cm2). Similarly, springiness values were significantly (p < 0.05) lower (0.7 vs 0.8 cm) in carrageenan containing product. Inulin, chitosan and carrageenan did not significantly influence the sensory attributes of restructured goat meat product. It is concluded that inulin, chitosan and carrageenan could be used to improve technological and functional attributes of the healthier restructured goat meat product.

Research limitations/implications

Future research may benefit from efforts to modify shelf life of the product by modifying packaging condition.

Originality/value

The healthier meat-based restructured goat meat product has been developed, and the effect on its quality characteristics have been extensively examined, limited research has focused on this aspect.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the Prandtl fluid flow in the presence of better mass diffusion and heat conduction models. By taking into account a linearly bidirectional stretchable sheet, flow is produced. Heat generation effect, thermal radiation, variable thermal conductivity, variable diffusion coefficient and Cattaneo–Christov double diffusion models are used to evaluate thermal and concentration diffusions.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing partial differential equations (PDEs) have been made simpler using a boundary layer method. Strong nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) relate to appropriate non-dimensional similarity variables. The optimal homotopy analysis technique is used to develop solution.

Findings

Graphs analyze the impact of many relevant factors on temperature and concentration. The physical parameters, such as mass and heat transfer rates at the wall and surface drag coefficients, are also displayed and explained.

Originality/value

The reported work discusses the contribution of generalized flux models to note their impact on heat and mass transport.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to showcase the utilization of the magnetohydrodynamics-microrotating Casson’s nanofluid flow model (MHD-MRCNFM) in examining the impact of an inclined magnetic field within a porous medium on a nonlinear stretching plate. This investigation is conducted by using neural networking techniques, specifically using neural networks-backpropagated with the Levenberg–Marquardt scheme (NN-BLMS).

Design/methodology/approach

The initial nonlinear coupled PDEs system that represented the MRCNFM is transformed into an analogous nonlinear ODEs system by the adoption of similarity variables. The reference data set is created by varying important MHD-MRCNFM parameters using the renowned Lobatto IIIA solver. The numerical reference data are used in validation, testing and training sets to locate and analyze the estimated outcome of the created NN-LMA and its comparison with the corresponding reference solution. With mean squared error curves, error histogram analysis and a regression index, better performance is consistently demonstrated. Mu is a controller that controls the complete training process, and the NN-BLMS mainly concentrates on the higher precision of nonlinear systems.

Findings

The peculiar behavior of the appropriate physical parameters on nondimensional shapes is demonstrated and explored via sketches and tables. For escalating amounts of inclination angle and Brinkman number, a viable entropy profile is accomplished. The angular velocity curve grows as the rotation viscosity and surface condition factors rise. The dominance of friction-induced irreversibility is observed in the vicinity of the sheet, whereas in the farthest region, the situation is reversed with heat transfer playing a more significant role in causing irreversibilities.

Originality/value

To improve the efficiency of any thermodynamic system, it is essential to identify and track the sources of irreversible heat losses. Therefore, the authors analyze both flow phenomena and heat transport, with a particular focus on evaluating the generation of entropy within the system.

Abstract

Purpose

Sustainable construction practices are strongly correlated with a profitable and competitive construction industry, improved client satisfaction and efficient use of resources. However, due consideration is not being given to sustainable construction practices in Nigeria. Therefore, this study aims to identify the unsustainable construction practices on construction sites, the barriers to sustainable construction and possible strategies to improve sustainable construction in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire survey of 50 construction sites was conducted with construction professionals on the sites as the specific target, out of which only 43 construction sites have at least a construction professional present at the site. Forty-three filled questionnaires from the respondents were used for descriptive (mean score, standard deviation and charts) and inferential analysis (t-test and Kruskal–Wallis) in this study.

Findings

The study shows that a large percentage (75%) of construction professionals in Nigeria are aware of sustainable construction. The descriptive and inferential analysis showed a disparity in the ranking of the 12 unsustainable practices, 14 barriers and 11 strategies among the respondents. Five unsustainable practices (“negative externalities”, “excess energy”, “unsustainable technologies”, “non-management of health and safety of workers” and “material waste”), six barriers to sustainable construction (“absence of historical data and exemplary projects on which construction professionals can build and learn from”, “lack of professional to handle the task”, “poverty and low urban investment”, “lack of urban and construction policy”, “lack of awareness” and “lack of technical know-how”) and three strategies to improve sustainable construction practices in Nigeria (“cooperation, partnership and participation”, “protection of biodiversity and conservation of natural resources” and “sustainability assessment system”) were found to be significant.

Practical implications

The study offers significant insights into the construction industry unsustainable practices, barriers to sustainable construction, as well as strategies for improving sustainable construction practices. These insights can be applied to other developing countries with an emphasis on geographical differences.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the recent studies in Nigeria that explored the context of sustainable construction in the construction industry by providing insights into the unsustainable construction practices, barriers and strategies to improve sustainable construction in Nigeria.
