Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at investigating emotional intelligence based on competencies for sales and IT people.

Design/methodology/approach

A study was conducted on 111 employees of 12 firms from four different sectors in which firms benefited extensively from IT and sales activities.

Findings

Emotional Competency Inventory (ECI, 2.0) was used for assessing the participants' emotional competencies. Independent sample t‐test results showed that IT and sales employees were significantly different from each other in all main dimensions of ECI except for self‐management. Also two separate discriminant analyses were conducted in four dimensions of EI and all emotional competencies in order to determine the ones that discriminate two groups of employees. According to the results of the discriminant analysis in four dimensions of ECI, except self‐management, the other three dimensions had significant loads to discriminate all groups. However, on competency basis there was no dominant emotional competency that separated one group of employees from the other. The results showed that it was more meaningful to use clusters of competencies for constructing competency models of these two positions than to use single competencies.

Research limitations/implications

Further researches should investigate different positions rather than sales and IT people. Also researches focusing on specific sectors can reveal more specific competency models.

Practical implications

Facts of the study showed that companies should consider differences depending on the tasks for their staff while designing training programs in terms of developing EI‐based competency. These programs for sales or IT people should focus on competency clusters rather than specific single competencies.

Originality/value

Increasing importance of emotional intelligence and its direct relationship to superior performance lead organizations to enhance their current employees' emotional intelligence and to hire new ones with higher emotional intelligence. This paper contributes to HR and training specialists by providing them with knowledge about how to use emotional competencies effectively in their applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of environmental dynamism on different EO dimensions in family firms. The authors also examine the moderating role of national culture (uncertainty avoidance and in-group collectivism) and the level of family control and influence in fostering/hindering this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted among 1,143 family firms from twenty-eight countries. The authors developed and tested hypotheses through a fixed-effects regression analysis.

Findings

The findings suggest that environmental dynamism has a positive effect on all three EO dimensions. Analysis reveals a positive moderating role of family control and influence and negative moderating roles of in-group collectivism and uncertainty avoidance.

Practical implications

The findings imply that family firm managers should carefully interpret the influence of their national culture on family firm behavior. More specifically, family firms in dynamic environments should consider the importance of the national culture in which they are embedded. Those operating in high uncertainty avoidant and highly collectivist cultures should take proactive steps to cultivate a corporate entrepreneurial culture. On the other hand, the family should not undermine the effect of its control and influence. In dynamic environments, family control and influence may be a competitive advantage in reinforcing entrepreneurial orientation.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature on EO in family firms by expanding the previous research on the antecedents of EO and examining moderation effects of culture and family control and influence across a broad multi-country sample. In contrast with the common findings regarding the effect of family logic on EO, the study shows the strengthening role of family control and influence in the relationship between environmental dynamism and EO. The authors show that culture as an informal institution may also play a critical role in hindering/strengthening the relationship between environmental dynamism and EO.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to determine the knowledge and attitudes of the physicians regarding human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), to emphasize that these patients exist and they will exist in the future and to raise awareness so as to prevent that their rights to treatment are revoked.

Design/methodology/approach

The survey was conducted via a link sent through an online system. Random physicians from 81 cities of the country were invited to the survey. The survey has 41 questions regarding knowledge and attitudes in total, including epidemiological information such as age, gender and title.

Findings

A total of 3,107 physicians has voluntarily participated in the study. In total, 2,195 (70.7%) are internal physicians and 912 (29.3%) are surgical physicians among the participant physicians. In total, 1,452 (46.7%) of the participants are specialist physicians, 608 (19.6%) of the participants are practising physician and the rest of it is physician assistants, academicians and dentists, respectively.

Originality/value

In this study, it has been found out that the physicians have a lack of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and they adopt a discriminatory attitude towards HIV-positive persons. HIV-positive patients who are exposed to discrimination and scared of being uncovered refrain from applying to hospitals for treatment, which puts public health into jeopardy due to the high viral load and these patients are faced with difficulties in coping with both medical and emotional load of the disease.

Abstract

Purpose

To analyse a self‐acting parallel surface thrust bearing using a proposed feedforward neural network.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, a one‐piece hydrodynamic thrust bearing with an initially flat surface is analysed, designed and tested. Analysis of the configuration used is particularly simple and gives good agreement with experimental results. Secondly, some artificial neural network types are designed to analyse minimum film thickness for specified load of thrust bearing system.

Findings

A more efficient film shape might result if the length of the cantilever did not increase with radius, since with the configuration used, the deflection of the outer corner was almost three times greater than the deflection of the inner corner, although this effect only becomes acute with regard to film thickness at fairly high loads. The design analysis of an asymmetric cantilever would be more lengthy and less easy to apply. Extrapolation of results for the plain bearing shows that high loads could be carried, but under severe conditions of temperature and clearance.

Research limitations/implications

Owing to finance problems, it was not easy to setup system in real time applications. This approach would be given usefulness elsewhere.

Practical implications

In future, this technique will be implemented for designing experimental neural network predictor on thrust bearing system. Also, this kind of neural predictor will be suitable for complex bearing systems.

Originality/value

A new type of neural network is used to investigate film thickness of thrust bearing system. Quick propagation neural network has given superior performance for designing of model of thrust bearing system. As described and shown in figures and tables, this kind of neural predictor could be employed for analysing such systems in practical analyses.

Abstract

In advanced market economies, multinational companies have 4.0 concept for their international value chain. In this study, some of the distinguishing features of 4.0 are discussed as follows: smart products’ development which has location information; realisation of new business models such as using new services for employees in the workplace; individual differences in social infrastructure; sensitive new job structure; and better work–life balance. Low cost, rapid deployment, longevity, low maintenance costs, high quality of service to the application conditions, design of components and features of the platform and application of a low laborious platform-related monitoring with re-all design levels, are focussed on the launching properties. With this approach, it attracts ‘consensus’ phenomenon; and art market price changes of the street stock market movements are at risk from external factors, such as the ‘consensus’ which can manipulate and sign the market prices largely.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to contribute significantly to the empirical investigations on adopting Industry 4.0–circular economy in the Malaysian palm oil industry. The paper also aims to theorise and empirically assess a comprehensive model incorporating three aspects and 51 criteria.

Design/methodology/approach

A two-stage methodology is proposed using the fuzzy Delphi method and the fuzzy-based analytical network process. Twenty-seven criteria on adoptability of industry 4.0–circular economy were selected for the first-stage methodology, followed by identifying each criteria's intersection with the overall objectives.

Findings

The findings indicate that financial constraints, the lack of a collaborative I4.0–CE model, laws and policy, low management support and the training of dedicated employers in I4.0–CE-application are the top five criteria requiring critical attention from the POI.

Practical implications

The overall sustainability advantages of the POI are identified and discussed in depth to establish criteria for industry 4.0–circular economy applications.

Originality/value

This study fills the previous research gap by theoretically explaining POI's industry 4.0 adoption–circular economy from the perspective of two underpinning theories. Due to the pressure towards sustainability, the industry must be ready to adopt industry 4.0–circular economy applications, and resources must be managed appropriately and effectively by sharing and integrating. Advanced industry 4.0 technologies and pragmatic practices such as a circular economy are needed to achieve optimal sustainable development while retaining commercial success.

Abstract

This paper presents an investigation into the classical problem using an experimental apparatus and applying an artificial neural network (NN) optimisation approach for determining the pressure distribution in a journal bearing at elasto‐hydrodynamic state of lubrication. The experimental system is employed at different working speeds with different surface roughness of shafts for getting pressure distribution. A NN is employed to predict the real data of the system as an optimisation technique. The NN is a radial basis function back propagation network. The NN has a superior performance to follow the desired results of the system and is employed to analyse such systems parameters in practical applications.

Online learning continues to grow year after year and majority of the growth is seen in public institutions of higher education. The purpose of this book chapter is to acquaint the readers to group-based learning in an online environment as an innovative practice for engaged learning. Diverse facets of group-based learning are discussed such as role of instructors, role of learners, challenges of group-based learning and finally role of social media in designing such group-based learning projects. A comprehensive prototype application of a group-based learning project walks the readers through applying group-based learning in their respective courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Finally some instructor designed rubrics for assessing group-based learning are shared for effective assessment of a group-based learning project.
