Abstract

Purpose

This paper narrates a case study on design thinking-based education work in an industrial design honours program. Student projects were developed in a multi-disciplinary setting across a Computing and Engineering faculty that allowed promoting technologically and user-driven innovation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

A renewed culture and environment for industrial design (ID) students emphasised seeking functionality and fidelity, user and society value over beauty and form factors alone. The pedagogical approach sought to determine the new industrial products reality with an increasing contribution by design thinking, and its associated methodologies that are currently advancing typical ID.

Findings

In conclusion, the authors propose a number of reflections as recommendations, which may be useful for educational institutions contemplating similar curriculum makeovers to their design degrees.

Originality/value

Our research provides valuable lessons to other design courses that wish to invigorate their curriculum with technical and design thinking-based advances.

Abstract

Purpose – This chapter examines the process of radicalization, deradicalization, and support for intelligence agencies in a few well-known cases of terrorists who turned into informants.

Methodology/Approach – Five cases studies are utilized to demonstrate the process of engagement in, disengagement from, and revolt against terrorist groups. Existing literature on radicalization and deradicalization is set against the context of these case studies.

Findings – By drawing upon the experiences of terrorists who turned into informants, it is possible to prove theories on radicalization and deradicalization. In particular, the process of cognitive radicalization presumes that extremist beliefs can also be rejected (deradicalization), while the process of behavioral radicalization presumes that terrorists can distance themselves from extremist behaviors (disengagement).

Originality/Value – Scholarship has traditionally focused on “underdogs” of all kinds, with a less keen interest in elites or the actors operating on their behalf. The work of informants has often remained in a dimly lit corner of academic research. This chapter helps illuminate the path undertaken by terrorists who become informants for Western security apparatus.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationship between perceived risk and tourists’ trust. It also investigates the role of perceived value as a mediating variable on the link between perceived risk and trust. Moreover, the moderating role of religiosity on the link between perceived value and trust has also been highlighted.

Design/methodology/approach

The research population is all tourists who have visited West Sumatra Indonesia in the past two years. This research used a survey method using questionnaires and used purposive sampling as the sampling method. It collected 400 responses and after some preliminary tests, 352 usable responses have been analyzed. The authors used a covariance-based structural equation model using AMOS 24 as the data analysis tool.

Findings

This quantitative research found that perceived risk dimensions (health, environmental and financial risk) have significant impacts on perceived value. Perceived risk dimensions also have significant effects on trust except for health risk. It also found that perceived value has a significant impact on trust and finally, religiosity which has a significant moderating impact on the relationship between perceived value and trust.

Research limitations/implications

This study is only one country study; hence, it has limited finding generalization. It needs to be expanded to other countries such as Southeast Asia countries. It only used three antecedents of trust, therefore, for future research; it might be extended to other antecedents such as cultural value, tourist efficacy and also some consequences of trust such as revisit intention and customer involvement. Finally, this is a cross-sectional study; hence, for future research, it might be expanded to a longitudinal study where the results are more generalized.

Practical implications

Trust will lead to tourist loyalty. Therefore, to establish trust, the managers need to provide the best services with pay attention to the tourist perceived risk. Moreover, it found that perceived risks will lead to tourists’ perceived value. Accordingly, to increase the tourist perceived value, the tourist destination managers have to minimize risk or uncertainty in the tourist destination such as environmental and health risk in the tourist destination. Finally, religiosity will strengthen the tourist trust, hence; the managers can attract and serve high religiosity tourists with Halal standard products and services.

Originality/value

This study has examined the relationship between perceived risk dimensions and perceived value which is not investigated in the previous studies. It also examined the mediating roles of perceived value on the link between perceived risk dimensions and trust. These mediating roles have not been addressed yet previously. Finally, it has also revealed a significant moderating effect of religiosity on the link between perceived value and trust which is neglected previously.

Abstract

Purpose

Adopting and implementing robotic technology applications in the library is a significant technological up-gradation today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate selected literature focused mainly on robotics technology applications in the field of libraries and to assess the online social attention to research publications.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed Scientometric and altmetric tools to evaluate the research publications. The bibliographic data of research publications were downloaded from Scopus database and scrutinized one by one and 71 articles were selected which mainly focused on robotic technology in libraries. Altmetric data were collected from the Dimensions.ai database. The analysis was performed using MS Excel, Tableau, Biblioshiny, VOSviewer and SPSS software.

Findings

Research on robotic technology in the field of libraries has been experiencing a gradual increase, marked by an annual growth rate of 12.93%. The United States has prominently led the way as the most active participant and collaborator in this advancement. Among the various journals, Library Hi Tech has notably stood out as a significant contributor to this field. However, the research articles have garnered limited social attention and impact. Furthermore, the patterns of authorship collaboration have demonstrated relatively modest levels within the field, and a weak correlation has been observed between the social attention received and the Scopus citation metrics of the publications.

Practical implications

The research needs to be disseminated more through various social media platforms to increase its visibility. Sharing research information through social media can bridge the gap between academia and society. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable reference for researchers and policymakers.

Originality/value

This study presents a Scientometric analysis of the selected published literature on robotics technology applications in the field of libraries, highlighting the progress and development of worldwide research in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to assess the adequacy of unified theory of acceptance and use of technology-3 (UTAUT-3) model in understanding academician’s adoption to e-Learning, with intent of getting more academicians to accept e-Learning in the Sri Lankan higher education context. Limited validity of the model in an educational context led to this study. The emergence of internet-based technology has changed the way people live, work and study. Technological platforms such as e-Learning have advanced educational systems by enhancing learner experience while benefiting teachers and educators in many ways.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used a deductive approach and quantitative methodology, in which a theoretical model was tested using hypotheses to assess causality between study variables. The simple random sampling was used to collect data using a self-administered questionnaire that was sent via Google Forms to targeted respondents. The final sample consisted of 441 academicians who responded to factors of e-Learning adoption on a seven-point Likert scale. Structured equation modelling was used for data analysis.

Findings

It was revealed that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, habit and hedonic motivation were significant influences of academician’s adoption to e-Learning. However, social influence and personal innovativeness in IT were not significant predictors of e-Learning.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the scope of the study, the factors that determine e-Learning adoption were limited to UTAUT-3 variables. Additionally, the concept was tested from only an academician’s perspective using quantitative methodology.

Practical implications

The findings are useful to higher education institute (HEI) administration, instructors and teaching assistants, policymakers to design and implement their online strategy as well as to make appropriate decisions in getting e-Learning accepted among a higher number of local HEI academicians. It is recommended for the decision-makers in the HEIs to consider the effect of the above findings in setting plans for higher e-Learning adoption. For instance, staff training catering to specific departmental needs, continuous awareness building, periodic reviewal of e-Learning system, e-Learning champions, introduction of policies and guidelines to encourage trial usage would be useful in this aspect.

Social implications

Successful use of e-Learning would help HEIs to overcome certain issues that exist in a traditional classroom. e-Learning facilitates education delivery beyond time and space while supporting enhanced performance monitoring and skill development which ultimately improve quality of output and institutional performance.

Originality/value

The study examined the adequacy of UTAUT-3 in understanding the adoptability to e-Learning. Second, it recognised a set of factors that affect the academic staff acceptance of e-Learning in higher education environments. A useful framework is provided to the HEI’s administration to successfully implement e-Learning systems. This study contributes to the growing body of information system literature by examining the validity of UTAUT-3 framework in the use and acceptance of educational technology in a developing country.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of auditability concept as one of the corporate governance indicators that could increase the management integrity practices and public confidence toward the organizations. Nowadays, most business organizations having issues related to the complexity of the transactions, which make it difficult to collect audit evidence and eventually may affect the company’s good governance. This paper highlights the importance of management integrity practices through auditability concept that needs to be emphasized in today’s business environment. Auditability is the ability of the organizations to provide accurate adequate records to be audited by auditors.

Design/methodology/approach

A number of databases in fields such as social sciences and economics were used to acquire literature on the topic.

Findings

A discussion on the auditability concept through auditability triangle and auditability model and how management could strengthen the governance practices.

Originality/value

This paper provides new inputs to related parties in preparing more comprehensive guidelines on the implementation of auditability practice among the management as to increase the public confidence on the reported financial statements.

Abstract

Purpose

Mobile learning has seen tremendous growth over the years. Like any other software application, usability is one of the key concerns in its successful implementation. There is a lack of study that provides a comprehensive overview of usability testing of mobile learning applications. Motivated by this a mapping study is conducted.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic mapping study was conducted using 51 papers retrieved from the Scopus database published between 2005 and 2022 that reported on usability testing of mobile learning applications.

Findings

The key findings suggest that research is expected to expand in the near future. User-based testing is the commonly used method, while data are collected mainly through questionnaires, observation and interviews. Testing is mainly conducted in a controlled environment.

Originality/value

The study provides (1) an evidence-based discussion on usability testing of mobile learning applications, (2) an up-to-date map on state of the art on usability testing of mobile learning applications and (3) providing direction for further research to scientifically strengthen the field.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control and perceived benefits on consumers’ intention to purchase energy-efficient appliances (EEAs) in an emerging market.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 400 samples were collected via a self-administered questionnaire distributed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The data was analyzed using multiple regression analysis to assess the hypothesized relationships.

Findings

The results of this study reveal that attitude is the key predictor of consumers’ intention to purchase EEAs, followed by perceived benefits of EEAs. This positive attitude stems from the realization that reducing electricity consumption is not only crucial but also a commendable and valuable practice. They can contribute to the collective effort to mitigate climate change, reduce carbon emissions and conserve valuable natural resources. Their positive attitude toward EEAs reflects their sense of responsibility, mindfulness and desire to make an important contribution to promoting sustainability and creating a better future for generations to come.

Practical implications

Energy-efficient companies, retailers and marketers should implement a range of appealing cash rebate programs to stimulate immediate sales, foster future purchases of EEAs and reshape the perception that EEAs are costly. By implementing such rebate plans, the perceived financial burden on consumers is alleviated, resulting in improved attitudes toward EEAs and heightened recognition of their perceived benefits. Consequently, this encourages a surge in demand for EEAs, thereby further propelling the growth of the industry. These sustainable practices align with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Originality/value

This study stands out for its exceptional contribution to theory, as it applies the theory of planned behavior as the underpinning theory and simultaneously integrates the perceived benefits of EEAs into the proposed model, aiming to foster consumers’ intention to purchase EEAs. What sets this study apart is its examination of an emerging market, which complements and expands upon previous research predominantly conducted in developed (Western) economies.

Abstract

Purpose

The limited existing literature on the future research direction regarding how servitisation and the halal supply chain interact motivates this study. The paper aims to integrate servitisation into the halal supply chain by proposing an integration roadmap for successful adoption in the halal industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The study used the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses method. Initially, 1,830 documents from Scopus and Web of Science were reviewed. After screening and refining, 1,241 documents remained. The authors then assessed these in full text, narrowing it down to 61 papers for the study.

Findings

The study discovered that the literature concerning servitisation and halal supply chains lacks essential conceptualisation, presenting an opportunity for exploration within the halal industry. Furthermore, it revealed that integrating servitisation into the halal supply chain can foster sustainable business growth and enhance customer satisfaction. Additionally, the study indicated that the interaction between servitisation and the halal supply chain may impact customers’ purchasing decisions and improve profit generation performance.

Practical implications

The study confirmed that integrating servitisation into the halal supply chain is crucial. The proposed roadmap aims to enhance the firm’s service delivery performance and impact customer purchasing behaviour through increased brand loyalty. In terms of industrial implications, the study offers guidance for industries transitioning to servitisation. The integration of servitisation in the halal supply chain can enhance efficiency and the ability to provide halal products that align with customer preferences and requirements.

Originality/value

This study suggests integrating servitisation into halal supply chains and provides a roadmap for exploring future research directions towards sustainable business growth. It not only offers thematic research direction but also practical insights. The roadmap can guide future research and development, enhancing business efficiency and customer experiences. This study reveals the potential of servitisation in halal supply chains and encourages further research on their interaction.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify articles examining human-robot interaction and the effects of robotic systems on employment.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, electronic searches were performed for articles published between 2000 and 2022 in Emerald, Springer, PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley and Google Scholar. In the searches of robotic systems with keywords such as “motivation, job satisfaction, job loss, performance, job giving,” 5 quantitative and 5 qualitative studies were included in the systematic review. The selected research was conducted using the Johanna Briggs Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies Checklist from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical evaluation lists and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research, depending on their type. The included studies are mostly on employee-robot collaboration.

Findings

Although the majority of the articles examined in this study are included in keywords or titles, it is determined that there is a gap in descriptive quantitative studies in the literature on the effects of employee-robot collaboration, robotic systems and robotic systems on variables such as motivation, job satisfaction, job loss, performance and employment, although they do not mention a framework that directly investigates human-robot interaction and the effects of robotic systems on employment.

Research limitations/implications

There are several limitations in this study. One of them is that, although the databases are comprehensively scanned, only studies published in English between 2000 and 2022 are included in the systematic review. Another limitation is the heterogeneity between studies.

Practical implications

As a result of the authors’ findings, the practical effects of the research are reflected as follows: It serves as a guide for future studies to fill the gap in the field, especially for academics and researchers working in the field of social sciences on robotic systems and intelligent automations. In addition to the qualitative studies on this subject, there is a need for the use of robotic systems in the field of human resources and management and quantitative studies with more sample sizes, especially at the corporate (firms) and individual (employees) level. Considering that the number of studies on this subject is very insufficient, this research is important in terms of shedding light on future studies.

Originality/value

The authors believe that the impact of robotic systems on employment is one of the few conceptual articles that systematically examines 6 dimensions (job satisfaction, performance, job loss, employment, motivation, employment).
