Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the patterns and determinants of excess labour turnover (churning) in the Luxembourg labour market using a rich employer‐employee matched data set.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper formulates a model to explain churning rates using three sets of explanatory variables: various worker characteristics, establishment characteristics, and two‐digit sector‐specific characteristics. The data used are from the Luxembourg social security system for the period 1992‐2003.
Findings
The findings show that there are high churning levels in Luxembourg, that their determinants vary significantly across sectors, and that much of this variation can be explained by worker‐ and establishment‐specific features.
Research limitations/implications
A major question, still undecided in the research literature, is whether churning is simply the result of random job‐worker mismatches.
Originality/value
There are relatively few prior studies that have examined which employee and employer characteristics are associated with excess worker turnover, and the paper is the first to analyze the phenomenon of churning in the Luxembourg labour market. Luxembourg has recently experienced impressive employment growth (about 3.5 percent annually) since the beginning of the 1990s; and, Luxembourg being a small economy, it was feasible to analyze the entire population of workers and firms.

Abstract
This chapter demonstrates that despite an unfavorable disciplinary climate for new academic subjects in France, tourism found its place in the French geographical scene almost 40 years ago. The first part traces the history of tourism in French geography until the epistemological turn due to the research laboratory MIT in the mid-1990s. It also focuses on the absence of knowledge of the Anglo-American literature and of multidisciplinarity in French research on tourism. The second part focuses on the valorization of tourism geography research in France, emphasizing the development of multidisciplinarity since the early 2000s, including the creation of a multi-disciplinary tourism laboratory and two journals. The chapter concludes reflecting on the possibility of a science of tourism.

Abstract
Purpose
This article discusses local cultural policies addressing popular music, and the values they imply, through a case study of Strasbourg's Espace Django, a publicly financed concert venue located in a disadvantaged neighborhood.
Design/methodology/approach
Espace Django's structural organization and overall cultural “philosophy” are described on the basis of field interviews and several documents related to the venue; they are then discussed in relation to literature on urban cultural policies and French policies concerning popular music.
Findings
Espace Django's activities embody a will to improve social interactions within local communities. The venue does not fit in either the “music city” or the “creative cluster” theoretical model. However, its policies belong to the French institutional tradition of Développement Culturel, and they express a tendency toward eventification and the experience economy.
Originality/value
In France, the public sector plays an important role in cultural practices, mostly through funding and policymaking. The example of Espace Django adds a distinct French perspective to a research field mainly centered on Anglo-Saxon countries and more liberal economies. Also, the appendix on Espace Django's response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) health crisis adds interesting elements for understanding what are the successful choices in the current cultural scenario.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to numerically determine the distribution of electric fields registered by a personal exposimeter (PEM) used for the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) around 900 MHz (GSM900) downlink (DL) band and compare these with calibration measurements of PEMs worn by real human subjects.
Design/methodology/approach
Numerical simulations using the Virtual Family Male (VFM) are carried out at 950 MHz in order to determine the electric fields surrounding the phantom in realistic, far-field environments. These electric fields can be used to determine the distribution of a PEM’s response when worn by the VFM. Simultaneously, calibration measurements in an anechoic chamber are carried out using a real PEM worn by two different subjects, in order to determine the PEM’s response experimentally.
Findings
Both the numerical simulations and the measurements show that a PEM will on average underestimate the incident electric fields in the GSM900 DL band and that the variation (expressed in terms of the 95 percent confidence interval and the interquartile distance) on its response is relatively large: a 95 percent confidence interval of 22 dB and an interquartile distance of 7.3 dB are found in a realistic environment using numerical simulations, while the calibration measurements show interquartile distances up to 12 dB. In terms of variation there is an excellent agreement between simulations and measurements.
Originality/value
This paper proves that numerical simulations may be used as a replacement for the more time- and work-consuming calibration measurements if the variation of a PEM’s response is studied.
