Abstract

Dutch policing has followed the three generations of community policing identified elsewhere. The paper outlines the three waves, arguing that progressive Dutch society has influenced policing styles, giving Dutch policing a strong social orientation. The material draws on action research projects from the 1970s and 1980s and current innovations with special attention to developments in Amsterdam and Utrecht in which the authors are involved as researchers or consultants. Following models from the USA there is a tendency to run hard and soft features of policing together. Contemporary community policing has then both a problem‐solving and a crime‐control rhetoric. New‐style community beat officers are better integrated into the organisation and are strongly involved in crime prevention. Difficulties arise in areas that are not conventional communities, such as inner cities, with a diverse public, an accumulation of social problems side‐by‐side with “entertainment”, and a potential for public order disturbances. Policing in The Netherlands has changed significantly in recent years to an emphasis on problem solving, partnerships with other agencies, crime prevention, fostering self‐reliance among citizens, and sponsoring the return of early social control mechanisms in public life – in schools, transport and with “town patrols” on the streets. Police have taken others on board and have relinquished their monopoly on safety and crime.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to answer the questions of what clothing practices related to sustainable fashion can be observed in young consumers' daily lives in Finland’s capital region and what prevents their further proliferation.

Design/methodology/approach

This is qualitative research that draws from 22 semi-structured interviews with high school students in the capital area of Finland. The data were analyzed with the use of thematic analysis, a flexible method of data analysis that allows for the extraction of categories from both theoretical concepts and data.

Findings

This paper contributes to studies of young people’s consumption with the practice theory approach, putting forward the category of following sustainable fashion as an integrative practice. The three-element model of the practice theory allows answering the question of challenges that prevent the practice from shaping. The paper further advances this approach by identifying a list of context-specific dispersed practices incorporated into sustainable fashion.

Practical implications

The study suggests practical ways of improving clothing consumption based on the practice theory approach and findings from empirical research. Sustainable practices require competences, knowledge and skills that the school, as an institution working closely with high school students, could help develop.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the current studies of sustainability and youth culture of consumption with a practice theory approach and findings, related to a particular context of a country from Northern Europe.

Abstract

Purpose

Societies are experiencing a rapidly ageing population, which puts pressure on health services and institutions for the elderly. Ageing baby boomers have unique characteristics compared to previous generations, yet very little is known about these consumers' expectations of institutional food. The importance and issues with institutional food are well-recognized, and new approaches to improving institutional food offerings are warranted. The purpose of this study was to identify various segments of ageing consumers based on individual characteristics (entitlement, subjective food knowledge, disconfirmation sensitivity and age) and investigate differences in expectations between the groups.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected using a cross-sectional survey (n = 300) of ageing consumers (50–80 years old). A two-step cluster analysis was used to identify meaningful clusters.

Findings

A four-cluster solution was reached, with clusters (1) “Uninvolved oldies”, (2) “Humble old foodies”, (3) “Entitled youngsters” and (4) “Food experts”. This study found significant differences in expectations of institutional food between the clusters.

Practical implications

Recommendations for public policy implications for each segment are provided. This study contributes to preparing healthcare services and institutions to meet the institutional food expectations of various types of ageing consumers.

Originality/value

This paper measures ageing consumers' normative expectations of institutional food and concludes that expectations of food quality, freedom of choice, servicescape and sustainability differ by segments of ageing consumers.
