Abstract

Purpose

This study addresses a gap in the literature by examining the marketing strategies adopted by wineries in the context of wine tourism. This study aims to identify marketing strategic orientations and highlight their significance in the context of wine tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

The research uses a comparative case study approach, focusing on two wine regions, Roussillon (France) and Empordà (Spain). It involves the analysis of 99 active winery websites to identify marketing orientations. Descriptive statistics, cluster analysis and ANOVA tests were used to achieve this.

Findings

The study reveals four distinct wine tourism strategic orientations adopted by wineries in these regions. It emphasizes the importance of external ties, varying levels of competitiveness, website performance and geographical differences as key findings. The results show that wineries with a clear diversification strategy benefit from a higher level of competitiveness.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the academic literature by identifying different marketing strategies within wine tourism, highlighting their importance and providing a comprehensive analysis of key areas, thus adding original insights to the existing body of literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Eventscape is widely recognised as having played an important role in the image of wine events; however, research on this topic is scarce, with only a few studies examining the image of a wine tourism event. To date, no studies have examined eventscape and attitudinal variables of a wine event together, thus indicating a gap in the research. Further research to gain a deeper understanding of the role these factors play is needed; thus, this paper aims to explore the relationships between event image, eventscape, satisfaction and loyalty in wine events.

Design/methodology/approach

A structured questionnaire was chosen for data collection, with a final sample of 117 valid responses. Qualitative data was analysed by means of content analysis. Univariate and bivariate statistical analyses were performed to analyse eventscape attributes and explore its relationship with event image, satisfaction and loyalty.

Findings

The paper highlights that perceptions of eventscape are intrinsically related to perceived event image and reveal a statistically significant relationship between these two elements. Results show the importance of the social dimension in the image perception of a wine event and point to conviviality as the main element. This study also reveals a relationship between perceived event image and attitudinal variables and suggests that having a positive image of the event positively influences levels of satisfaction, which are higher, and willingness to participate in future editions of the event. Findings also reveal a relationship between event image and loyalty.

Originality/value

Wine-related events are undergoing significant developments, creating a need for competitive strategies to develop wine tourism and vineyards in certain regions. Research in this field is scarce to date; therefore, this paper adds to the literature by the studying consumer behaviour of attendees at wine events.

Abstract

Purpose

Police officers’ attitudes toward criminals are critical to the justice system’s response to crime. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the attitudes toward offenders (ATOs) among police officers.

Design/methodology/approach

To assess police officers ATOs, the authors adapted the Attitudes Toward Prisoner scale to produce the ATO scale. The scale was completed by 431 male police officers in a Portuguese police institution.

Findings

The results revealed that police officers hold more negative ATOs than correctional officers and graduate students. Moreover, the results revealed significant differences in average ATO scores according to police officers’ age, years of service, marital status and education; namely, police officers who were older, married, less educated, and with more years of police service had more positive ATOs. However, the results revealed that these demographic factors had a limited value in predicting attitudes, as none of them emerged as a predictor of ATOs.

Originality/value

Nonetheless, considering the relevance of attitudes in law enforcement procedures, the implications for training police officers are provided, specifically using critical incident technique strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to systematize and critically analyse existing indices and frameworks on digital capabilities with the focus on consumers’ digital capabilities, identify opportunities for their further development and suggest agenda for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 18 frameworks and indices of consumers’ digital capabilities were compared based on their purposes, stakeholders, scope and application areas.

Findings

The study concludes with propositions that generalise current views on conceptualisation, measurement and management of consumers’ digital capabilities. Each proposition is further investigated in terms of possible implications for research and practice.

Practical implications

The study indicates opportunities for businesses not only to consider consumers as recipients and adopters of digital technologies but also to aim to understand how to proactively involve consumers in value co-creation, help them be better educated and have a comprehensive understanding of potential outcomes of their participation in the digital economy.

Social implications

Highlighting individual consumer perspective in existing indices and frameworks will help consider the interests of society and provide win-win opportunities for everyone involved in the digital marketplace through bottom-up engagement in addition to top-down regulation and monitoring.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the extant literature threefold: firstly, existing digital capability frameworks and indices are systematized and critically investigated using criteria of stakeholders, purpose and aims; secondly, consumers are identified as principal stakeholder group whose interests are insufficiently presented in existing indices; thirdly, an integrative approach is suggested for a crucial comparison of existing indices, frameworks and their methodology with the focus on consumers’ interests.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to analyse the level of knowledge about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of pre-service teachers in Early Childhood and Primary School Education at the University of Valencia (Spain) and the origin of this knowledge over several academic years, as well as to compare it with that of students of the Degree in Environmental Sciences at the same university.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was designed, validated and administrated to 1,040 students of Degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary School Education and Environmental Science of the University of Valencia to analyse their knowledge of the SDGs and their evolution over three academic years (2019–20, 2020–21, 2021–22).

Findings

Statistical analysis shows that most of the participants are either unaware of the SDGs and their importance or have insufficient knowledge of the SDGs and their linkages.

Practical implications

The need to continue promoting teaching resources to favour the implementation of education for the SDG in initial teacher training is highlighted.

Social implications

Pre-service teachers can become agents of change if they understand the magnitude and complexity of the socio-environmental crisis and get involved through their educational action in the required measures to advance in the construction of more sustainable societies.

Originality/value

This study aims to emphasize the necessary training and involvement of students of the Degree in Early Childhood Education, Primary School Education and Environmental Science at the University of Valencia to advance in the transition to Sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the determinants of consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for black walnuts in the US.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses data from a 2023 survey of 916 US consumers and applies an ordered logit regression analysis to assess the determinants of WTP.

Findings

Income, consumption frequency and awareness of the health benefits of black walnuts significantly influence WTP. Moreover, 57% of individuals in our sample are willing to pay more for black walnuts than the current market price for English walnuts, the main competitor, highlighting a substantial market opportunity for black walnuts.

Originality/value

The demand for nuts, both domestically and globally, has seen a remarkable increase in recent years, largely driven by their perceived health benefits across various consumer segments. However, not all nut varieties have experienced commensurate growth, leading to a need for detailed analysis of consumer preferences, particularly for nuts with slower growth trajectories, such as those within the walnut industry. Within the walnut industry, black walnuts (Juglans nigra) stand out with unique production and commercialization dynamics – sourced predominantly from wild trees, boasting distinctive flavors and health benefits, yet facing significant challenges such as limited commercial scale, lower yields and the presence of only one processor in the US. These factors highlight the substantial market potential for black walnuts and make studying this unique crop essential for stakeholders across the nut industry who are interested in enhancing the competitiveness of the black walnut industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in the Brazilian context, seeking to identify its main characteristics and opportunities for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

This study focuses on a literature review in the area of production engineering and operations management, where 104 relevant scientific publications were identified.

Findings

The results show that the most important critical success factor for integrating LSS in Brazil is top management support and commitment. LSS integration occurs predominantly in large industrial companies, being incipient in small and medium-sized enterprises. In general, there is no structured way of applying LSS. A standard framework for LSS is still lacking.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to a sample that only comprises Brazilian scientific studies.

Practical implications

Professionals and practitioners can understand the evolution of LSS through practical applications and the main LSS tools used in both the industrial and services sectors. It also points out the critical success factor for the implementation of LSS. The study highlights several roadmaps for LSS implementation adopted by large and modern Brazilian automotive industries based on a robust technological base. This study also contributes to expanding the evidence base of LSS application, both in Brazil and in other countries.

Originality/value

Some suggestions are proposed to clarify the structure and complexity of integrated implementation of LP and SS as well as expand the LSS application in small and medium-sized enterprises. This study is the first to discuss the current situation of LSS in Brazil and provide suggestions to expand LSS in the country. Comparisons of Brazilian LSS literature review with researches of others countries are also presented.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to report findings about how prisoners experience and cope with COVID-19 restrictions, which can contribute to an understanding of how pandemic responses, and specifically the COVID-19 response, affect prisoners.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected through ethnographic fieldwork involving days of observations (N = 24) and the conduction of semi-structured interviews with prisoners (N = 30) in closed prisons and detentions in Denmark between May and December 2021. The transcribed interviews and field notes were processed and coded by using the software programme NVivo.

Findings

The data analysis reveals that the pains of imprisonment have been exacerbated to people incarcerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. To relieve pains of imprisonment, prisoners turn to censoriousness as an informal coping strategy, where they complain about inconsistency and injustice in the prison’s COVID-19 prevention strategy to reveal the prison system itself as a rule-breaking institution. The prisoners criticise the prison management for using COVID-19 as an excuse, treating prisoners unjustly or not upholding the COVID-19 rules and human rights. Furthermore, principles of justice and equality are also alleged by some prisoners who contemplate the difficulty in treating all prisoners the same.

Research limitations/implications

More research will be needed to create a full picture of how prisoners cope with pandemic responses. Further research could include interviews with people working inside prisons.

Originality/value

In a Scandinavian context, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to apply an ethnographic approach in exploring prison life during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of audit quality and environmental auditing on integrated reporting and the effect of environmental auditing on audit quality.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected from a sample of 300 international companies during the period 2010–2019. The author collected the data from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database, sustainability reports and annual reports. A multiple regression analysis was performed to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The finding of this study confirms a positive and significant relationship between audit quality and integrated reporting. It is also found that environmental auditing has a positive and significant effect on integrated reporting. Thus, this study found a positive and significant relationship between environmental auditing and audit quality.

Practical implications

The findings in this paper identify strategies for improving integrated reporting as a crucial element in the processing of financial and nonfinancial information, to help managers and investors and shareholders take a long-term perspective. Therefore, the results encourage companies to invest in economic, environmental and social aspects. This enables accounting professionals, stock exchange authorities and users of environmental and social information to be aware of the factors associated with environmental reporting, to improve the efficiency of those producing the audit service.

Originality/value

The originality of this study lies in its consideration of a particular aspect of auditing, namely, environmental auditing. However, despite the large body of research on auditing and integrated reporting, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to examine the relationship between environmental auditing and integrated reporting. Furthermore, in this research, the author has emphasized the importance of the role played by environmental auditing on audit quality. This design has been neglected in previous studies. Finally, the choice of the field of investigation for the reliability of the data used and the generalization of the results obtained, enables us to make important contributions to the user of the information.
