Abstract

Purpose

To provide a core library instruction and orientation program for new students entering Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria.

Design methodology/approach

How to communicate with new students who have a variety of backgrounds when they enter the campus about navigating their way around the University Library. A course design is described that is content intensive about core library information.

Findings

Great utility for new students to the campus and reinforces the variety of library services and programs and resources with which they should be familiar as they pursue an academic course of study.

Originality/value

Shows that use of the web can help provide this information and create a way for library staff to update sources.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the level of automation in Nigerian meteorological stations.

Design/methodology/approach

It involves a descriptive survey of the assessment of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in data storage and dissemination in Nigerian meteorological stations. Questionnaires were used as the major instruments of data collection while interviews were still used to gather some peculiar data. Questionnaires were sent to each of the 46 meteorological stations and 11 to weather stations in some Nigerian universities. Out of the 57 questionnaire only 15 were returned and used for the study. The results are presented in tables and analysis using simple percentages.

Findings

The results showed a low level of automation because only two of the meteorological and weather stations in Nigeria are automated. The study also revealed that CLICOM software is very effective in weather information management. Similarly, the result showed that the CLICOM software is highly useful in the making of weather maps, charts and for quick dissemination of weather data, map and other information to students, university and public libraries who request such information. The reasons for the low level of automation were attributed to a lack of funds, faulty equipment and obsolete computer systems. It is therefore highly recommended for the Nigerian government to make funding available for the automation of the Nigerian meteorological stations and weather stations in Nigerian universities to ease data management and dissemination of weather information in Nigeria.

Originality/value

This research and its findings will assist the Nigerian meteorological service agencies in quick dissemination and retrieval of weather information to airports, university and research libraries and to the public in general.

Abstract

Purpose

This study seeks to explore how students are increasingly using the Internet to support instruction and research needs in addition to heavy e‐mail usage. The extension of this research suggests more positive impact from the Internet in almost every aspect of academic life and suggests the need for more access at reduced costs on and near this campus.

Design/methodology/approach

A questionnaire was used to survey a sample of students about their internet practices.

Findings

Students are now coming to university with more background in technology and the role of the internet and other ICTs. The demand for internet service will continue to grow and how the university should respond to meet this greater demand is the focus of this research.

Originality/value

Study suggests that the impact of the ICTs and internet service for e‐mail and other research activities related to the role of studying suggests that access is a key problem that must be scaled better so that students and faculty have improved access. This situation should continue to be monitored and the study suggests that more and more university affiliates will need improved access to internet resources.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper sets out to investigate cybercafés' change of internet service providers (ISPs) in Nigeria.

Design/methodology/approach

Employs a survey design using questionnaires to collect data from 89 cybercafé entrepreneurs/managers in four states of Nigeria (Delta, Edo, Lagos, and Ogun), and analyses the data using frequency counts and percentages.

Findings

The findings reveal that most cybercafés were established between 2002 and 2003. The majority of the cybercafés have ten PCs connected to the net, while a greater number of them are connected to the net via wireless means. A good number of cybercafés have changed ISPs once. The lack of or poor technical support and frequent loss of contact/signals with the ISP were two of the reasons reported for cybercafés changing their ISP. Cybercafés would like ISPs to increase their speed of transmission, etc., to serve them better. It is recommended that cybercafés should obtain adequate information before engaging ISPs, and that ISPs should conduct periodic customer assessment of their service in order to improve on their services.

Originality/value

This research and its findings will assist Nigerian (and other) ISPs to improve their services to their clients. Using the results of this study, cybercafés and other ISP clients will know what to take into consideration before signing up with any ISP.

Abstract

Purpose

Introduces readers to the new multilingual keyboard technology, KONYIN.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper describes KONYIN, a Nigerian multilingual keyboard that has just been invented. It highlights the features and the benefits of the keyboard manufactured by LANCOR technologies based in Boston, MA. Describes eight years of product design to achieve results.

Findings

Applications for a new typewriter/keyboard that accommodates different languages and diacritical marks in a single interface.

Research limitations/implications

Users no longer have to switch keyboard layout to type in any language. Has great potential for other language variations.

Practical Implications

Provides useful information and advice for software architects and computer scientists, linguists and writers who want to write in native languages and dialects as well as international languages on one keyboard. Has enormous potential for translation.

Originality/value

This may be the first virtual keyboard layout with its scope.

Abstract

Purpose

The study reports on the decision to go forward with plans for library automation, and its details, including the number of computers/their capacity, the networking pattern used in the automation of the Delta State library and the operating systems. A review of the library software currently in use – X‐LIB, and the general features of the software, the required training in general computer application and how to use the X‐LIB, and handle data entry and retrospective conversion is covered. The article also speculates about the future plan of the library and the constraints it may experience due to the automation plan.

Design/methodology/approach

The work was based on the report/experience of the Delta State University library in implementing automation with the use of X‐LIB. The researcher adopted a descriptive method to reveal the state of automation of the university library and the experience to date. This is a descriptive case study about implementation of X‐LIB software.

Findings

Automation requires intensive staff training and forces future planning for subsequent phases and developments. Research limitations/implications The obvious implications are scale and financial resources, staff development and how far in the future a library wants to stage this phase of implementation. Many libraries already have invested in this process and refined it but in cases like this institution, library automation is still young.

Practical Implications

Useful, practical insights based on local experience is what is described.

Value

As a case study other libraries considering this product or going in this direction will find this submission of interest.
