Abstract
Purpose
Collaboration is an advantageous strategy for technology‐based competition. Thus, it is of high concern to understand mechanisms behind the success of collaborations such as performance measurement system. This paper will present an empirical study conducted in the Turkish textile industry where performance measures are developed and applied.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper utilizes a combination of interviews and surveys to collect data from 3T partners that are six technology supplying and ten dyeing and finishing companies. The findings indicate that besides trust, the existence of a performance measurement system is an extremely important bridge for effective supply chain collaboration (SCC). Such a system should cover metrics related to internal performance, perceptions of partners regarding the alliance performance, and the degree of inter‐firm relationship.
Findings
The paper is based on a technology partnership so the results need to be taken cautiously. However, it is clear that 3T is a successful technological partnership with six new technologies developed in two‐year period. There are some potential improvement areas, particularly in its internal activities and its relationship with the partners. The study shows that as the level of information sharing and communication among the partners increase, the performance and the benefits of the collaboration also increase.
Originality/value
SCC can have long‐term goals like continuous product innovation as experienced in 3T and this might increase overall performance of an industry. That is why SCC might be particularly important tool for developing country firms that lack both financial and human resources.

To gain an understanding of the benefits, bridges, and barriers associated with supply chain collaboration.
Abstract
Purpose
To gain an understanding of the benefits, bridges, and barriers associated with supply chain collaboration.
Design/methodology/approach
Insights from extensive field research of a successful collaboration example in the Turkish dyeing and finishing industry.
Findings
The competition among firms is increasingly shifting from company vs company to supply chain vs supply chain. The insights obtained from the collaborative model in this textile supply chain provide a good understanding of the benefits, bridges, and barriers associated with supply chain collaboration. Benefits can be grouped as customer‐oriented benefits, productivity benefits, and innovation related benefits. Factors supporting collaboration are observed as trust, common goals for cooperation, and existence of cooperation mechanisms, while barriers are related to three factors: lack of trust, risk‐benefit evaluation, and lack of common goals for cooperation.
Research limitations/implications
Findings are based on interviews and questionnaires conducted with the managers of 3T, 30 dyeing and finishing firms (ten are partners) and six technology‐supplying partner firms, from various regions in Turkey.
Practical implications
Highlights the importance of trust and collaboration mechanisms in managing collaborations. As the case of 3T in the dyeing and finishing industry shows, collaborations might significantly contribute to the competitiveness of textile firms.
Originality/value
This paper presents a successful collaboration model in creating new technologies and products by bringing the resources of competing partners together. This collaboration might be a tool for firms in developing countries to become competitive in their respective industries at the global level.

Abstract
Facing uncertain environments, firms have strived to achieve competitive advantage by partnership management and supply chain collaboration. The objective of the research is to uncover the nature of partnership management and explore its impact on supply chain collaboration and firm innovation performance. The research divides partnership management into three stages: partnership selection, partnership establishment, and partnership sustention. The research constructs the influence mechanism of partnership management on supply chain collaboration and innovation performance. By questionnaire of 133 manufacturing enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta of China, and using SPSS statistical analysis, the empirical results show that partnership selection, partnership establishment, and partnership sustention have significantly positive influence on supply chain collaboration and innovation performance; supply chain collaboration has a complete mediating effect between partnership election, partnership establishment, and innovation performance; and supply chain collaboration has a partial mediating effect between partnership sustention and innovation performance. The research reveals the construct mechanism of firms’ improving innovation performance through partnership management.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper is specifically developed on the basis of a pragmatic model for the Muslim-friendly medical tourism supply chain industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness and viability of the Muslim-friendly medical tourism supply chain practices in Malaysia.
Design/methodology/approach
A framework for the service supply chain management of the Muslim-friendly medical tourism with the effective outcomes was theoretically developed and explored in this study, using a structural equation modelling with the partial least squares technique. A structured questionnaire was developed, distributed and collected from 38 Islamic-friendly hospitals, 9 Muslim-friendly medical agencies and 44 Muslim-friendly hotels that will form the potential relevant associations of the medical tourism supply chain practices in Malaysia.
Findings
The findings provide reliable evidence that the effectiveness of the Muslim-friendly medical tourism supply-chain practice has a positive impact on the Muslim-friendly medical tourism supply chain. In addition, the Muslim-friendly medical tourism supply chain practice has also a significant and positive impact on the organizational performance as a whole. The result also demonstrates that collaboration is dependent on the demand management, whilst the productivity is not associated with it.
Originality/value
Practicing and implementing a Muslim-friendly medical tourism service supply chain is important, in the sense that the Muslim patients’ demand on the choice of halal practice of medical treatment and halal food consumption criteria. This investigation is the first to embark on the research on the Muslim medical tourism supply chain production network in Malaysia. This study provides practitioners with the important related data to improve their policies and their performances in the organization. The statistical results provide indispensable valuable information in comprehending the critical medical tourism supply chain practices and most specially to assist the Muslim-friendly medical tourism sector to offer quality medical tourism service that suits and attracts the Muslim medical tourists’ broad needs regionally and abroad.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper explores the most recent contributions to interpreting customer-driven supply chains (CDSCs) under the IMP lens, focusing on the main characteristics that emerged from a review of the relevant literature. The purpose of this paper is to offer a holistic interpretative framework of major topics covered by the CDSC literature, highlighting both some shared issues and emerging elements using the IMP conceptual framework’s ARA (actor bonds, activity links and resource ties) model.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper reviewed the literature by searching selected journals using a combination of specific keywords in order to find the most recent contributions on the CDSC theme. The presented analysis allowed an interpretation of the findings through a conceptual framework.
Findings
The findings suggest that the ARA model could be a useful method through which to structure an interpretation of the most recent contributions, in both IMP and the general literature, on the discipline. In particular, three streams of research were identified: the customer closeness strategy, relational strategy, and intra-organizational strategy.
Research limitations/implications
These clusters can be deeply analyzed using the major knowledge on CDSC dynamics. By studying these issues in an integrated way, the implications in terms of competition, generalization of results, constraints, problems, and difficulties of the customer-driven approach could be enhanced. Limitations are the restricted period of time and the absence of empirical research.
Practical implications
Each identified cluster presents the tools that have to be improved in order to implement the customer-driven orientation, which increases the performance and brings an added value for the same supply chain. For this reason, an emerging need is to develop studies on the empirical side that consider the implications in terms of an integrated framework among the three issues.
Originality/value
The paper increases the understanding of CDSCs by using conceptual and interpretative tools developed by the IMP literature. The ARA model allows the creation of a conceptual framework that clarifies, in a holistic way, the most important characteristics that have to be developed in order to improve the CDSC perspective. Recommendations and a research agenda for the implementation of the customer-driven view are derived.
