Abstract
The effects of ethnicity on the career paths of advanced and specialized law enformcement officers are examined. Analyses focus on two measures of possible perceived or actual employment discrimination by ethnicity. Ethnicity is found to be a minor indicator of rank compared to experience and education. A differential distribution of rank by ethnicity was found in some departments and in the total sample in some rank categories. Lack of ethnic diversity became increasingly disproportional as rank rose. Analysis of length of assignment shows all minority groups and females proceeding through their career paths more quickly than white males. Findings are presented with policy implications.

Asserts that when faced with complex motives and behavior, humans tend to simplify and generalize in order to make sense of a bewildering set of complexities. Categorical systems are standard tools for boiling down the diversity of human behavior into manageable pockets (market segments) that allow us to predict future behavior. Discusses the merits of this process and also the risks of oversimplification. Examines examples of successful direct marketing to market segments, in particular the Cohorts II system, and makes suggestions as to how best to identify and reach market segments. Concludes by addressing current trends (e.g., using the Internet as a marketing medium) and how these will affect market segmentation.

Abstract
Purpose
This study, a perspective piece, aims to argue that one particular slice of political institutional operations – the conduct of international relations – offers a clue to the possible risks that businesses face from geopolitics.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors examine the various facets of international relations and diplomacy, including the processes and arenas, to show the relevance of statecraft for firms looking to minimize political risk.
Findings
By understanding the role of diplomacy and statecraft as a process, firms can better prepare themselves for events that have far-reaching ramifications. This is very different than minimizing risk from inherent geopolitical tensions and allows for a more flexible approach to understanding risk levels in the global arena.
Originality/value
International business scholarship has focused on institutions and their effects on firms and has recently begun to re-examine the role of geopolitics and political risk on firm performance and decisions. However, the current literature continues to have a superficial understanding of institutional processes and their impact on business, especially when it comes to the daily workings of political institutions.
