Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to create an accurate computer‐based flight simulation of the FanWing experimental aircraft. The model would then be used to record and document the aircraft's performance and handling qualities.

Design/methodology/approach

The project consisted of three phases. The first was to simplify and convert existing aerodynamic data into a form that was compatible with the simulation software. The second phase involved the development of the model, and the third, flight testing.

Findings

The aircraft performance and handling qualities of the aircraft were recorded in all flight phases.

Research limitations/implications

The FanWing's aerodynamics are unusual and software limitations prevented its characteristics from being implemented directly. This meant that certain flight tests could not be carried out accurately.

Practical implications

The model will likely be used as a preliminary training tool for the FanWing's first pilots. It is also a useful publicity tool for the aircraft, and provides an insight into how this unusual aircraft flies, from a pilot's perspective.

Originality/value

Prior to this research, only aerodynamic data had documented the aircraft's performance. The simulation model allowed for conventional flight data to be recorded, and compared with similar aircraft.

Abstract

Purpose

As a short take-off and landing aircraft, FanWing has the capability of being driven under power a short distance from a parking space to the take-off area. The purpose of this paper is to design the take-off control system of FanWing and study the factors that influence the short take-off performance under control.

Design/methodology/approach

The force analysis of FanWing is studied in the take-off phase. Two take-off control methods are researched, and several factors that influence the short take-off performance are studied under control.

Findings

The elevator and fan wing control systems are designed. Although the vehicle load increases under the fan wing control, the fan wing control is not a recommended practice in the take-off phase for its sensitivity to the pitch angle command. The additional pitch-down moment has a significant influence on the control system and the short take-off performance that the barycenter variation of FanWing should be considered carefully.

Practical implications

The presented efforts provide a reference for the location of the center of gravity in designing FanWing. The traditional elevator control is more recommended than the fan wing control in the take-off phase.

Originality/value

This paper offers a valuable reference on the control system design of FanWing. It also proves that there is an additional pith-down moment that needs to be paid close attention to. Four factors that influence the short take-off performance are compared under control.

Abstract

Purpose

Over the past few decades, the flow around circular cylinders has been one of the highly researched topics in the field of offshore engineering and fluid-structure interaction (FSI). In the current study, numerical simulations for flow around a fixed circular cylinder are performed at Reynolds number (Re) = 3900 with the LES method using the ICEM-CFD and ANSYS Fluent tool for meshing and analysis, respectively. Previously, similar studies have been conducted at the same Reynolds number, but there have been discrepancies in the results, particularly in calculating the recirculation length and angle of separation. In addition, the purpose of this study is to address the impact of time interval averaging to obtain the fully converged solution.

Design/methodology/approach

This study presents the LES method, using the ICEM-CFD and ANSYS fluent tool for meshing and analysis.

Findings

In the current study, turbulence statistics are sampled for 25, 50, 75 and 100 vortex-shedding cycles with the CFL value O (1). The recirculation length, angle of separation, hydrodynamic coefficients and the wake behind the cylinder are investigated up to ten diameters. The drag coefficient and Strouhal number are observed to be less sensitive, whereas the recirculation length appeared to be highly dependent on the average time statistics and the non-dimensional time step. Similarly, the mean streamwise and cross-flow velocity are observed to be sensitive to the average time statistics and non-dimensional time step in the wake region near the cylinder.

Originality/value

In the current investigation, turbulence statistics are sampled for 25, 50, 75 and 100 vortex-shedding cycles with the CFL value O (1), using large eddy simulation method at Re = 3900 around a circular cylinder. The impact of time interval averaging to obtain the fully converged mean flow field is addressed. No such consideration is yet published in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the numerical analysis of mixed convection within the horizontal annulus in the presence of water-based fluid with nanoparticles of aluminum oxide, copper, silver and titanium oxide. Numerical solution is performed using a finite-volume method based on the SIMPLE algorithm, and the discretization of the equations is generally of the second order. Inner and outer cylinders have a constant temperature, and the inner cylinder temperature is higher than the outer one. The two cylinders can be rotated in both directions at a constant angular velocity. The effect of parameters such as Rayleigh, Richardson, Reynolds and the volume fraction of nanoparticles on heat transfer and flow pattern are investigated. The results show that the heat transfer rate increases with the increase of the Rayleigh number, as well as by increasing the volume fraction of the nanoparticles, the heat transfer rate increases, and this increase is about 8.25 per cent for 5 per cent volumetric fraction. Rotation of the cylinders reduces the overall heat transfer. Different directions of rotation have a great influence on the flow pattern and isotherms, and ultimately on heat transfer. The addition of nanoparticles does not have much effect on the flow pattern and isotherms, but it is quantitatively effective. The extracted results are in good agreement with previous works.

Design/methodology/approach

Studying mixed convection heat transfer in the horizontal annulus in the presence of a water-based fluid with aluminum oxide, copper, silver and titanium oxide nanoparticles is carried out quantitatively using a finite-volume method based on the SIMPLE algorithm.

Findings

Increasing the Rayleigh number increases the Nusselt number. Increasing the Richardson number increases heat transfer. Adding nanoparticles does not have much effect on the flow pattern but is effective quantitatively on heat transfer parameters. The addition of nanoparticles sometimes increases the heat transfer rate by about 8.25 per cent. In constant Rayleigh numbers, increasing the Reynolds number reduces heat transfer. The Rayleigh and Reynolds numbers greatly affect the isotherms and streamlines. In addition to the thermal conductivity of nanoparticles, the thermo-physical properties of nanoparticles has great effect in the formation of isotherms and streamlines and ultimately heat transfer.

Originality/value

Studying the effect of different direction of rotation on the isotherms and streamlines, as well as the comparison of different nanoparticles on mixed convection heat transfer in annulus.

Abstract

Purpose

Governance quality has been a dominant factor to formulate policies for the development of financial institutions in the world. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of governance quality on financial institutions along with globalization in the case of Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

Time series data from 1996 to 2018 are considered for analysis. The NG-Perron is applied to check the order of integration. In addition, Kim and Perron (2009) structural break unit root test is used to identify break years. The autoregressive distributive lags (ARDL) bound testing approach is used to detect the long-run association among governance quality, financial institutions and globalization.

Findings

The results of unit root analysis show that all series are stationary at a different level of integration, I(0)/I(1). However, the long-run association is detected in the presence of break years. The authors find a positive impact of governance quality to determine financial institutions in the long-short-run. Similarly, globalization also enhances financial institutions but only in long run.

Originality/value

This study fills the gap in the economic literature by exploring the linkages between the financial institution and disaggregated governance indicators in the case of Pakistan. Moreover, a role of structural break is also captured during analysis. This study also opens some new insights for policymaking.

Abstract

This study investigated the emerging progressive use of ornamental art in the landscape architecture of Kazakhstan and determined the influence of symbolism on the quality of new urban environments. The study analysed the existing recreational facilities in Kazakhstan in order to establish their symbolic meaning, the level of utilisation of symbolic ornaments, and the socio-economic factors that influence the design structure of landscape elements. The results revealed that symbolic meanings of the ornaments stem from historic, legal and cultural traditions of different ethnic groups in Kazakhstan. Therefore, the form depends on not only the topography of the area, but also the traditional symbolism and numerology. This study categorised the studied places according to their size: large gardens, small squares and small landscape forms. Taking into account the natural and climatic features of Kazakhstan, small landscape forms acquire the quality of arid zone gardens. However, lack of identity and consistency appears to be a major problem in design of larger scale landscapes. This article posits that coordination between socio-economic and historical-cultural factors will open new creative opportunities for the development of an original landscape architecture in Kazakhstan, yet balance between environmental construction and contextually meaningful urban planning will still be needed.

This chapter provides an overview of the concept of sustainable smart cities and its implications for urban development. It explores the key features of sustainable smart cities, including their focus on technology, data and citizen engagement and the challenges they are facing in terms of infrastructure, data management, social equity, environmental sustainability, governance and regulations. The chapter also highlights the implications of sustainable smart cities for urban planners, policymakers and other stakeholders, emphasising the need for collaborative approaches that engage citizens and stakeholders in the design and implementation of smart city initiatives.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to inspect the existence of the “environmental Kuznets curve” (EKC) in the presence of foreign direct investment (FDI), financial development (FD) and urbanization throughout 1972–2018 for Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

For time series analysis, Phillips and Perron (PP) and Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) unit root tests are used to confirm the level of integration. For robustness, Kim and Perron (2009)’s structural break unit root test is employed, which identifies the order of integration in the presence of structural break years. Further, combined cointegration analysis is performed to confirm the existence of a long-run association between underlying variables. Furthermore, autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) analysis is employed for the robustness of the cointegration approach.

Findings

The cointegration analysis confirms the existence of a long-run association among variables. The authors find a positive and significant impact of urbanization, FD and foreign development on environmental degradation in the long run. Similarly, only FDI increases environmental degradation in the short run. In addition, the authors find an inverted U-shape relationship between economic growth and environmental quality which, further, confirms the presence of EKC in Pakistan.

Originality/value

This research contributes to applied economics in many ways: the combined effect of urbanization, FD, FDI and economic growth on carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is checked simultaneously. To avoid ambiguity, this study constructs the FD index through the principal component analysis (PCA). Moreover, the role of structural breaks has been considered through the analysis. Novel Bayer-Hanck combined cointegration analysis is employed to detect the existence of long-run relationships among underlying variables.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the relationships between aggregated and disaggregated energy use in the industrial sector, carbon emissions and industrial output in China.

Design/methodology/approach

The study utilizes annual frequency data for the period of 1984-2015. The unit root properties of data are tested using augmented Dickey–Fuller and Phillips and Perron unit root tests. Furthermore, the Zivot–Andrew structural breaks unit root test is used to detect the structural breaks steaming into series. The autoregressive distributed lag bound test and newly developed Bayer–Hanck combined cointegration are used to check the existence of a cointegration relationship between underlying variables. Last, the direction of causality is determined applying vector error correction model (VECM) Granger causality.

Findings

The results confirm the existence of a long-run relationship in the presence of structural breaks. The authors conclude that aggregated and disaggregated energy consumption in the industrial sector increases CO2 emission in both long and short run. The VECM Granger causality analysis indicates the bidirectional relationships between CO2 emission, industrial growth and aggregated and disaggregated (coal, oil and natural gas) energy consumption.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the empirical results mentioned above, the study proposes the recommendation that China should focus on the use of natural gas in the industrial sector instead of coal and oil consumption. The most potent reasons for such a transformation are twofold: natural gas is much more environment-friendly, thus being a much lesser polluting source of energy, and, most significantly, such a change would have no adverse impact upon the output level.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the existing literature on estimating CO2 emission by using aggregated and disaggregated energy consumption in case of China. Notwithstanding, it also adds to the existing applied literature by using newly developed combined cointegration to confirm and substantiate the cointegration relationship between the underlying variables. Moreover, this study incorporates the role of structural breaks while investigating CO2 emission function, which helps in providing more valuable policy suggestions.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework of knowledge sharing for Bangladesh’s business organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

On the basis of previous literature, this paper proposed a framework for knowledge sharing.

Findings

This paper identified organizational commitment as a potential mediator for the relationship between organizational factors (organizational culture, leadership and structure) and knowledge sharing. In this paper, top management support and information and communication technology (ICT) support are also proposed as potential moderators that can affect knowledge sharing.

Research limitations/implications

This paper has identified several organizational factors to predict knowledge sharing. Future research with empirical evidence will validate this conceptual framework.

Practical implications

This paper will help business managers to understand knowledge sharing from a different perspective. Propositions of organizational commitment as a potential mediator and top management support and ICT support as potential moderators will provide managers with a better understanding of employees’ knowledge sharing behavior.

Originality/value

This paper adopted the general model of workplace commitment and integrated with organizational factors (organizational culture, leadership, structure, top management support and ICT support) to understand knowledge sharing for the business organizations of Bangladesh.
