Abstract

IN 1980, venture capitalists invested almost $1 billion in the growth businesses and emerging industries of the future. Eighty percent of this investment was made by the 100 or so leading venture capital firms. These professionally managed venture capital firms are dedicated to identifying business opportunities that can become major corporations within ten years. These venture‐capital‐financed companies will play key roles in defining the future competitive environment of present corporations, so tracking these firms is one way of keeping an eye on the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive summary of the effect of different dietary approaches on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Design/methodology/approach

This review represents the history of PCOS, the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. It also includes up‐to‐date research articles on different types of diets that have been shown some promising effects in the treatment of PCOS.

Findings

PCOS is nowadays considered the most common endocrine abnormality, with a range of 4‐12 per cent of women affected by the syndrome. It has been proven that diet, in addition to exercise and medication, plays an important role in the treatment of PCOS. The proper dietary approach for women with PCOS should focus on the PCOS symptoms and also improve weight loss, increase fertility, and decrease risks of cardiovascular diseases.

Originality/value

This paper provides accessible and comprehensive information on PCOS (since its discovery in 1935) to researchers, nutritionists, and women with PCOS who are interested in the effect of the diet on PCOS management.

Abstract

In this chapter, I return to a conference I organized with Michael Flaherty in 1990 and transcribe an exchange I had there with Norman Denzin about lived experience and emotions. I develop this conversation as a starting point for honoring Norman's many contributions to my life and career and to the interpretive community in general. This discussion provides a view into the concerns of symbolic interactionists and scholars of emotions, as well as a glimpse of Norman in action and my coming into my own, during the 1990s. I interpret this dialogue as an epiphany in the development of my relationship with Norman, in my self-confidence as a scholar, and in evocative autoethnography as an appreciated qualitative perspective and approach.

Abstract

SIMPLICITY is the keynote of the Britten‐Norman Ltd. Islander light transport aircraft. Simple in construction and with simple systems, the whole conception of the aircraft was based on the specific needs of the third level or commuter airlines and the air taxi companies for an economical and efficient aircraft with excellent payload capacity over relatively short distances. The fundamental design philosophy behind the Islander was to bring a new low level of operating cost and the potential of a high level of profitability to short haul air transport. For many years the general trend in aircraft manufacture has been to make transport aircraft larger, faster and more complicated; this has applied just as much to small aircraft for the air taxi or feeder‐line operator as to intercontinental airliners, although perhaps not in quite so dramatic a fashion as occurred with the introduction of the Boeing 747 which presented the airlines with an aircraft having double the capacity of its predecessor. The men behind the Islander, Mr John Britten, C.B.E., and Mr Desmond Norman, C.B.E., Joint Managing Directors of Britten‐Norman Ltd., were convinced of the need for a robust utility aeroplane from their early experiences in operating a scheduled service commuter route in the Cameroons. As they saw it, there was a gap in the market for an aircraft designed to have minimum capital cost per saleable passenger scat on short haul sectors. In keeping with this philosophy the airframe structure had to be simple and designed with the fatigue problems of small aircraft very much in mind. Laminations were to be used extensively for spars, inter‐spar stringers and skin‐plating to cut machining costs and to simplify repairs. A high standard of corrosion proofing was needed to give reliability and for operation in all parts of the world. Ancillary equipment that was already proven and in world‐wide use was specified so that the reliability would be of a high order and spares would be easily available. Low wing loading and a high power to weight ratio were necessary to give S.T.O.L. performance without the use of expensive and sophisticated flaps. A large pay‐load capacity together with a cabin that could be quickly adapted for passengers, freight, ambulance, photographic and geophysical survey, agriculture, parachuting and many other roles were also essential requirements.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper puts forward a MARC-based semiautomated approach to extracting semantically rich subject facets from general and/or specialized controlled vocabularies for display in topic-oriented faceted catalog interfaces in a way that would better support users' exploratory search tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

Hierarchical faceted subject metadata is extracted from general and/or specialized controlled vocabularies by using standard client/server communication protocols. Rigorous facet analysis, classification and linguistic principles are applied on top of that to ensure faceting accuracy and consistency.

Findings

A shallow application of facet analysis and classification, together with poorly organized displays, is one of the major barriers to effective faceted navigation in library, archive and museum catalogs.

Research limitations/implications

This paper does not deal with Web-scale discovery services.

Practical implications

This paper offers suggestions that can be used by the technical services departments of libraries, archives and museums in designing and developing more powerful exploratory search interfaces.

Originality/value

This paper addresses the problem of deriving clearly delineated topical facets from existing metadata for display in a user-friendly, high-level topical overview that is meant to encourage a multidimensional exploration of local collections as well as “learning by browsing.”

Abstract

Sport organizations hold substantial ideological power to showcase and reinforce dominant cultural ideas about gender. The organization and portrayal of sporting events and spaces continue to promote and reinforce a hierarchical gender binary where heroic forms of masculinity are both desired and privileged. Such publicly visible gender hierarchies contribute to the doing of gender beyond sport itself, extending to influence gender power relations within sport and non-sport organizations. Yet, there has been a relative absence of scholarship on sport organizations within the organizational sociology field. In this paper, we review findings of studies that look at how formal and informal organizational dimensions influence the doing and undoing of gender in sport organizations. Subsequently, we call for scholars to pay more attention to sport itself as a source of gendered organizational practices within both sport and non-sport organizations. We end with suggestions for research that empirically explores this linkage by focusing on innovative theoretical perspectives that could provide new insights on gender inclusion in organizations.

Abstract

Purpose

Inductive charging systems for electrically powered cars produce a magneto-quasistatic field and organism in the vicinity might be exposed to that field. Magneto-quasistatic fields induce electric fields in the human body that should not exceed limits given by the International Commission of Non-Ionizing Radiation protection (ICNIRP) to ensure that no harm is done to the human body. As these electric fields cannot be measured directly, they need to be derived from the measured magnetic flux densities. To get an almost real-time estimation of the harmfulness of the magnetic flux density to the human body, the electric field needs to be calculated within a minimal computing time. The purpose of this study is to identify fast linear equations solver for the discrete Poisson system of the Co-Simulation Scalar Potential Finite Difference scheme on different graphics processing unit systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The determination of the exposure requires a fast linear equations solver for the discrete Poisson system of the Co-Simulation Scalar Potential Finite Difference (Co-Sim. SPFD) scheme. Here, the use of the AmgX library on NVIDIA GPUs is presented for this task.

Findings

Using the AmgX library enables solving the equation system resulting from an ICNIRP recommended human voxel model resolution of 2 mm in less than 0.5 s on a single NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU.

Originality/value

This work is one essential advancement to determine the exposure of humans from wireless charging system in near real-time from in situ magnetic flux density measurements.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic market shock on house pricing, time-on-market (TOM) and probability-of-sale functions using local multiple listing service data from Richmond, Virginia, USA.

Design/methodology/approach

The empirical analyses use a two-stage residual inclusion model to simultaneously address endogeneity and nonlinearity in modeling sales price and TOM, and a Heckman two-stage procedure to account for sample selection bias in estimating the probability-of-sale.

Findings

The pandemic shock not only directly impacted average home prices, TOM and probability-of-sale, but it also caused the coefficients of some of the factors that influence these metrics to change while others were stable to the exogenous shock of the pandemic. The authors find that coefficients in the hedonic pricing, TOM and probability-of-sale models did not shift instantaneously; instead, the impact evolved over several months at the beginning of the pandemic until stabilization.

Originality/value

The results should be of interest to buyers and sellers of residential properties, agents specializing in residential properties and researchers looking to better capture the impact of exogenous events on housing prices and buyer preferences.

Abstract

Organizations facing issues related to growth, innovation, and strategy are embracing design thinking, a problem-solving process. This study explores 40 design thinking initiatives and identifies operational practices emerge and empirical categories across various contexts. Quantitative analyses of the initiatives and qualitative interview data are used to distinguish four configurations of action analogous to races: training, emphasizing learning-by-doing; marathons, capturing personal reflection over a long project; relays, highlighting team collaboration; and sprints, reflecting fast-paced product innovation. The initiatives are differentiated as designer-led versus team-driven and, low-urgency versus high-urgency. Implications of practicing design thinking in Organization Development and Change are discussed.
